January 20th, 2008

And then there were two. Two what? Well, I could be talking about the two swells we had this week. Oh yea, there were two. Tuesday and Friday. And they were both good. Or, I could be talking about the last two NFL teams that were left standing and heading to the SUPERBOWL.

One of those teams is your NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS! So here we are living in Historical times unlike any other time in New England Sports History. It's almost surreal.

And while your NE PATRIOTS are now 18-0 and heading into a place in NFL standings that NO OTHER team has ever entered, we've also had back to back swells that have left a lot of us reeling with glee.

I thought things had turned around for us back in November when we had week after week of decent surf. Then we had a decent December and now...well kids, things are pretty good here in New England in January.

Surf, snow and Patriots.

So think they can beat the GIANTS? Is Eli "Opie" Manning really that good? Or has he just stumbled his way into the Biggest game of the year? All of those experts who thought Coach Coughlin was crazy for playing his starters during the last regular season game against the Patriots are eating crow. Clearly that worked out fine for his team and for any other team who played their starters. Like...oh yea, the Patriots. The teams that sat their starters like the COLTS, COWBOYS and a few others are all sitting home today.

Go figure. One thing's for sure, we (and I say we as in fans, media, players and coaches) are one game away from History. Years from now when we are all sitting in lounge chairs in old age homes for surfers we will remember these times as the most memorable times of our lives. Even if you're not a sportsfan.

You benefit from being around sportsfans who are actually in a good mood. Lord knows Patriots, Sox, fans of Yesterday have suffered some heartbreaking losses. And the repercussions of these losses have had an adverse affect on many lives. Better to be living with a winning region than a losing one.

I do have to give some major props to Laurence Maroney and Kevin Faulk. Without these two incredible backs, we are not having to suffer through my endless praise of this team today. They were hands down, the difference in this game. Well, that's not entirely true. The defense did well today. In spite of the negative criticism they have taken in the past few weeks. But Maroney and Faulk? They were UNBELIEVABLE! Especially the 3rd and 11 for a first down. That was huge and in my humble opinion, the play of the game. Great plays from two of the Greatest team in NFL history.

I tell you who I really feel bad for. All my friends who live all over the country who are NOT Patriots fans.

You know who you are...and you know what's coming.
18 and 0 and that's all you need to know.

So, we all got to watch another entertaining early rounds of AMERICAN IDOL last week. And they did not disappoint. I can't believe I'm actually writing about this again. I honestly don't know how the hell I got sucked up into this wacky world. Oh wait, I remember now. My kids got me into it. I missed the first few years. Then one day I walked by the TV and saw some of the amazing auditions. Not by the talented singers. It was the not so talented. I was hooked.

Why? Did I actually get something out of watching someone trying to sing, who obviously couldn't? Well, I guess so. There's something about a person who is so tone deaf that they either can't hear what they're singing or, they have no idea they are singing that bad. It's fascinating. And this year, there were moments of almost volatile explosions. Security standing off in sidelines were called in several times to escort a despondent individual out the door.

Which prompted me to say..."They ought to give those security guards Tazor Guns." My kids thought I was being a little over the top. "Seriously," I said. "Those guys should be Tazing those dudes. Especially that one big guy who was sweating and spinning around aimlessly singing complete nonsense. I mean he could be Al Qeada!" My kids all yelled in unison"DAD!!!"

Which prompted my next absurd comment. "In fact, I think that they should allow Lifeguards to carry tazor guns." "Dad you are too much, I can't take this." Mackey V answered.
"No, I mean it. Give the Lifeguards tazor guns to keep the losers who break bottles on our beach in line." Plus they could maintain law and order when the occasional spat breaks out." "Dad!!!!" they all yelled again.

"Well, maybe they should allow me to carry a water proof tazor gun and I could paddle around keeping the peace out in the water. You know, someone drops in on somebody, I give them a verbal warning and if they do it again, I give 'em a little zap. Or, if someone ditches their board in front of a bunch of unsuspecting paddlers. Again, a warning. Then if there's another infraction. A Taze."

Can you hear it now? "Don't taze me bro!"

A BIG GET WELL SHOUT OUT to Jane McCarthy ( a bona fide surf matron here on the NH Seacoast and mother of long time NH Surfer Duffy McCarthy). Tom Christo another surf dad (TC's dad). Ginny Grondin (mother to surf legend Kevin Grondin). And our condolences to Mark Saracusa who's grandmother passed away last week.

Today 2008 Parting Shot...Don't Move Sweetheart.

(Above) Most of us are lucky if we can get our wives, girlfriends or significant others
to hang on the beach with us. Or to take the occasional photo. While some even paddle out
and surf with the boys and do well. Erica, Jill, Nohea and so on...But Can you imagine having
a girlfriend who would willingly do this? A beautiful art form that still lives on in Hawaii.
