Kevin Grondin Becomes the First Northern New England Inductee into the East Coast Hall Of Fame. September 11th, 2017 and HURRICANE IRMA

Kevin Grondin is my oldest, closest, living friend. We have known each other since the early 70's. *In fact, we met when we were both in opposite youngster gangs. It's true. We used to get in apple war fights with the kids from our neighboring town. What is an apple war? We would gather the crab apples on the ground and throw them at each other. Yes they hurt. They stung in certain areas of your body. Try to imagine some 50 kids throwing apples at each other. Kevin threw the apple, that ended those wars. He hit my then best friend in the eye with an apple. We captured him and basically terrorized him before releasing him back to his horde.

Somehow we were all mature enough to realize that apples can mess you up.

We met each other as surfers in the early 70's. We've been friends ever since. It would be easy to say that we sort of grew up in our surf world together. I knew of Kevin's talent right away. The kid (and he was a kid to me) could surf. I was at the time good friends with a mutual friend. Joe Somogyi. Joe and I had served in Vietnam at the same time. Kevin was a few years behind us. So the war ended before he was eligible.

Kevin was at first annoying to me, but only because of his age and lack of what Joe and I had experienced. But he was such a good surfer, he would not be denied into our small but loyal club. Kevin was a competitor surfer. He could surf his butt off and he used everything in his arsenal to beat everyone that challenged him. He was smart in those early days. I mean the kid had talent and theory. And he carried that talent for many many years. Joe and i were the complete opposites. We never liked, or entered any contests. It didn't bother us that Kevin did them, it just wasn't for us.

All we cared about was Kevin our young friend and hot surfer. He was the subject of many of my surf movies. From the early 70's (above) to the current day. After he got word of his Induction, we went south to shoot and surf IRMA.
I shot and Kevin surfed, and I have to tell you, that young grom back in the 70's can still surf his ass off. It's amazing to watch him surf at his age.

Through the many years Kevin won every freaking title that was out there. From the ESA to the current Legends Contest in PR. You did not want to draw Kevin in your heet. His accurate ability to know exactly when the sets would come was mind boggling. And Kevin didn't just compete, he was and still is a Coach. He has coached some of the most talented surfers out there. His knowledge and talent was enough for any young up and coming surfer to listen to. The man is a legend. He has more trophies that he's thrown away than most people have in their lives. It's ridiculous. He knows how to win.

The kids he has coached always acknowledge him wherever they go.

Kevin being inducted into the East Coast Hall Of fame is long overdue. He did it all the hard way. He did it the right way. And most importantly, he earned it.
He has surfed small waves and Big waves and he's surfed them all like the pro that he is. This is Kevin below during Hurricane Gabrielle in 1989.
Take a look at that wave. That my friends, is the real deal.

When we would travel to Hawaii his longtime friend Lenny Nichols would show him the ropes and the places and people that he would need to know. I on the other hand was the guy with the camera. I can tell you first hand how many times the surf would be pounding on the North Shore and I would basically insist that he paddle out. We laughed about it back then, and we still chuckle at it. Kevin always thought that I was trying to get him killed. Not true. I knew he had the talent and the courage to tackle those big waves.

I have movies from this day (above). The thing about Kevin was that he always seemed to get the biggest and best waves. And I'm telling you, my movies would not be worth watching without his surfing. And, that's true today. I just shot him surfing some big beautiful waves down south that are from Hurricane IRMA. Wait til you see them.

Our friend Joe passed away in 1978. And from that day forward, Kevin and I became closer. His then girlfriend Kim Dreyer was also part of our group. Kim and Kevin were married in 1989. I was Kevin's best man. My wife Cory was there too. We all became close friends and raised our families together. And through it all, Kevin kept his surfing at a higher level than most surfers half his age. His coaching the US team won him all kinds of accolades.

This pic above is from last year. Something about this photo. His confidence and his love of god, family, and friends seem evident to me in this image.

I don't want this blog to come off as some kind of Eulogy, because I am convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that he will out live all of us. So congratulations Kevin. You earned this.

The graphic below is why we (Post 35 in Hampton) still acknowledge September 11th. Tomorrow is the 16th anniversary of that day. And these 67 men below have their names engraved in our Global War On Terrorism Monument. If you are around at 6PM tomorrow night. You should stop by. It's always a moving ceremony. Now for Some International News
I am saddened like most of you with these back to back Hurricanes hitting the US. From Harvey to Irma. Plus there's more coming. I feel a sense of guilt because of my surfing background. All surfers love tropical storm swells. We wish that nobody ever got hurt or lost their homes and belongings. But we can't control the weather.

But the news media? They can certainly control sending their reporters out into Hurricanes and snow storms. I mean really. Do we really need to see some guy standing in the rain and wind telling us how windy and rainy it is? Hell no. One of these days we are going to witness one of them getting clobbered by a flying tree or piece of debris. Though I suppose that would make the story even juicier.

When you have to wear goggles to report the news? It's time to think about another possible career. Mark my words. We will see it live one of these days. Some poor underpaid reporter becoming the first on air casualty from a hurricane. We should take bets on who it will be.

KSM Photoshop of the Week

By now you have all been aware of my weekly photoshopping of this piece of human shit. But not this week. This is the person who was the master mind behind September 11th, 2001.
Khalid Sheik Mohammed (KSM) came up with the idea of crashing jet planes filled with fuel and passengers to crash into those buildings. The horror of that day will live on into the future. Long after we are all gone from this earth. 9-11 will never be forgotten. And neither will this pile of human garbage.

This is how he looked that early morning when he was captured. This look and this photo will also live on forever. It is the look of defeat. It is the look of evil being very afraid. He will rot in hell when it's time for him.

The souls of those 3,000 lives will haunt him forever.

So my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed).

*Note to self -must pick up a case of hair removal at Home Depot this week.

REST IN PEACE Uncle Chuck.

REST IN PEACE "Gidget" October 2001-August 2017

Monday September 11th, 2017 we are adding another name to our monument. The public is invited.

And this JUST IN. I am holding off the release of this movie until Thanksgiving. We need a few more big swells to make this film legit. So far so good. We just need a few more head high and bigger swells. If you are a woman or you know any women or girls that can surf. *Especially if they are shortboarders. Please have them get in touch with me. I keep meeting more and more women who have been surfing around these parts, and have just been flying under the radar. So help me pass the word.

LABOR DAY September 4 2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

The "boys were back in town". Dougie "Fresh" Wright, TC Christo, and Ryan Olsen all NH transplants were back on the Live Free Or Die coast. They scored insane surf on Thursday August 31st, and now this. Labor Day September 4th, 2017 had a fun little waist to chest high swell, and the vibe was all good. The song is by Thin Lizzy "The Boys Are Back In Town"
This is the second edit in as many days and it's on to the BIG Swell. But hold on kid...it looks like there's more surf coming! Oh hell yeah!

The Day After 9-1-17 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

A couple of weeks ago Cory and I were hanging out in the pool with Tony at the Surf Shack. He played Abbey Road as we took in the afternoon sun. The song SUN KING came on and I remember thinking, this would make a cool soundtrack to an all empty wave short web edit. And that's exactly what I did. The arrangement is by Giacomo Bondi and it works well with this edit. Like I said, it's just empty waves. I shot this all at the Wall on September 1st, 2017.

HIT THE BEACH X 8-25-17 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

The 10th Annual HIT THE BEACH August 25th, 2017. Hampton American Legion Post 35 along with Cinnamon Rainbows, Pioneers, Summer Sessions, Zapstix, ESA-NNE, Fresh Valley Fruit, and all you Volunteers help take the Wounded Warriors from Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other Military stations around the world surfing. This is our 10th Year! It's been incredible. About five years ago, we opened it up to the Veteran's spouses and children. Because let's face it, the families have suffered just as much as the vets themselves. We have turned this day into a family Beach-Surf Day. Surfing is All about having Fun. And as you will see, everyone in this web edit is having fun. The song is by SEMPER FI my band from 1984-1987. I wrote this song RED, WHITE, and BLUE in 1986. Surprisingly, it goes well with this video. Again, THANK YOU SPONSORS and a VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU to all you Volunteers! I love you all.

GERTRUDE August 17-2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

Hurricane GERT was a bust in NH. The long arm of Cape Cod blocked any chance of a swell reaching our shoreline. The call was to head down south, or to go further north. Instead, I hung around hoping and waiting for something. Eventually, a little something did show up late on the day after, and the local longboard crew were on hand to take advantage of the small, but glassy waves. Mikey Moran, Kyle Linseman, Pev, Duffy, Kevin Rafferty, and a couple of shortboarders. Kai Nichols (Happy Birthday) and Crowley. *Oh and the debut of Jonah Kirby made the final cut. Xavier Rudd provides the soundtrack.

HIT THE BEACH from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

A combination of the HIT THE BEACH surfing event from the last few years. Featuring wounded veterans from the Wounded Warrior project, The NEDS, and others. The annual event held at Hampton, NH North Beach is sponsored by American Legion Post 35, Cinnamon Rainbows, Pioneers, Zapstix, and Summer Sessions. Along with help from the ESA-NNE, Joe Gangi's Fruit company, The Town of Hampton, The HPD, the HFD, and the many many wonderful Volunteers who show up every year. This coming Friday August 25th, 2017 will be out tenth anniversary. TEN YEARS! "If We Say It's Safe To Surf! It's Safe To Surf!!!

GRANITE GIRLS and The RIVER WOMEN
from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo. This is the trailer for the new Surf Free Or Die and Ralph's Pic movie about the women surfers of the Northeast.
We're looking at a late summer release. It's been fun working with these talented women. The movie itself will be around 30 minutes long.
Hope you like it.

Sunday September 10th, 2017. "I got so cold up there in New Hampshire that I urinated into my suit and let it all gather around my ankles. You should have seen some of those guys. No hoods. No gloves. No boots. And 3/2's! They're crazy up there!!!"

I'm pretty sure this guy would be considered over dressed.
