After 26 Years. The END of EASTERN SURF MAGAZINE.

I have to say, I have been dreading this day for the last few years. The end of another surfing magazine era. I guess I was hoping against hope, that ESM could continue on, in spite of the rapid changing landscape, of the printed magazines. One by one, they have been dropping off the grid and shutting down the print presses. It's truly an end of an era.

I really loved getting the magazine. It was so special on so many levels.

A magazine dedicated to the entire EAST COAST. From Nova Scotia to Puerto Rico. All EAST COAST ALL THE TIME. I know I'm not alone in feeling this tremendous loss. Their coverage of the East Coast was second to none. They just celebrated their 25th anniversary last year. And now...

They say they are going to keep the website going. And I suppose that's something. But honestly, there's no better feeling (in my opinion) of picking up a printed piece, and thumbing through the pages and reading the articles and gossip along with looking at the amazing pics each month. Damn, I'm gonna miss that. The digital world claims another jewel.

This was the very first issue. 1991. Richard "Dick" Messorall and Tom Dugan were the two men behind this project. Mez and Dugan did it all in the beginning. They lit that fire and watched it catch on like nothing the East Coast had ever seen before. Every month the mag got better and better. They had the advertisers and the readership that launched that baby into the mainstream. In the last 5 or 6 years, Nick McGregor took over the helm of Editor. Nick's a great guy and a great writer. I hope he's staying on-board with the website. I'd really miss him if he were to move on.

Every surfer on the East Coast was hip to ESM. It was a badge of honor to get your pic in the mag. And to be mentioned in the popular Blah Blahs. They (Nick) even did a feature on New Hampshire a few years ago. That was a keeper. I have a few copies of that one.

This was the LAST printed issue. It came out in September. I'll be keeping this one along with my other favorites. I was lucky to have been part of their team. My name next to Jeff Divine as a senior photographer was an honor. To be included with some of the world's best was mind blowing. Check it out! It's a list of who's who in surf photography.

The VERY last Northeast BLAH BLAHS mentioned my new movie
coming out GRANITE GIRLS and The River Women. I'm so bummed that
I won't get a physical copy of the review that they said they were going to do.

I know a whole bunch of surfers up and down the East Coast looked forward to this section.

The very LAST Blah Blah...GRANITE GIRLS. Sigh...

Now for Some International News

The whole Harvey Weinstein story keeps blowing up. In fact it's started a viral social media blitz called "ME TOO". Where MILLIONS of women are commenting on their own experiences. It's pretty eye opening to say the least. I posted this on Facebook last week. But I know that some of you don't have Facebook.

Three disgusting Pigs. Not a single one of these three are what I would consider handsome. Am I right people? Powerful men? Money and fame? That's all it is. Otherwise these three clowns would be shopping at Wall Mart with their wives.

KSM Photoshop of the Week
So this is FAIR season all over the country. I'm a big fair guy. I love going to the local fair in Topsfield. I hear that it's the OLDEST continuous Fair in the country. It's a tradition in my family. And though we don't spend any money on the Midway, or rather, NOT that much money, we still like the experience of being yelled at by the Carney's. It's as I said, a tradition. Well, OLE KSM got a short 3 day furlough last week to work the Midway at a local Florida Fair. KSM was running the GUESS YOUR WEIGHT and AGE spot and was basically losing money hand over foot. He was being fooled by the women who were not wearing Burkhas. Oh well.

So my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed).

*Note to self -must pick up a case of Stuffed Animals at Home Depot this week.

I kept a daily BLOG when I surfed everyday during my
CATCH A WAVE FOR MOLLY. (Click On the Banner below)
Started on July 26, 2010 ENDED July 26, 2011.
A Wave a day for 365 consecutive days.
Yesterday- Robin Rowell with nephew Corey Howard.
Circa 1970's
(Below) This is our old surf bud Robin Rowell during his peak of physical surf shape. Robin was the REAL deal as far as knowing all about surfing, and it's rich history. Plus, he could surf his ass off. A powerful Goofy foot who blazed many a trail in the late 60's throughout the 70's and into the mid 80's. Robin Rowell was a surfer. He turned his nephews Corey and Kyle onto surfing and they both surf today. One of these days, Robin might get back out in the water. I hope I'm around when that day happens.

GRANITE GIRLS Trailer II 10-19-17 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

This is the second trailer for the upcoming GRANITE GIRLS and The River Women movie. These are all new clips. I have over 25 women appearing in the final cut. The trailers are too short to have them all in. So, having said that, the music for this trailer is by QWILL. I had to push back the release to get some additional footage. We're now looking at anywhere from the last week in November to the week before Channakuh and Christmas. And what a lovely Holiday present this DVD will make. I've been having fun putting this together. And I think most of the women are really looking forward to the release. *There will be a Premiere screening prior to the movie going to DVD. I'll keep you all posted on that date and location.

MARIA from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

Hurricane MARIA in New England. It's hard to get excited about a swell from a storm that devastated Puerto Rico. Lets face it, all East Coasters love PR. It's our Go To place for Tropical dream waves. The surf from Maria was well worth the travel woes. It's all New England Surfers. The music is by my old band SEMPER FI and the title of the song that I wrote in 1983 is...MARIA. I know ironic huh? David Robinson from The CARS produced the song. I also included a couple of tunes from Tom Petty. I loved that man and his music. So sad. If any of you want to help out the people of Puerto Rico contact the AMERICAN RED CROSS. Thanks.

JOSE September 20th to September 24th, 2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

TS Jose came to town and just got ugly on us. Rain and onshore winds, with glimpses of glass, and sun. But mostly Jose was ugly and dirty. Nothing wrong with ugly, as long as there is some size and entertainment. And there was all of that and then some. The surfers are the local knowns and unknowns. But the music? The VINNY band music was recorded in 1983. Three songs off of our OLAS DE SEXO LP produced by David Robinson of The CARS. I wrote all the songs on the LP. The songs in this video are: "WAVES" "I NEVER SAW YOU" and "HERE'S WHERE I GET OFF" the last song is probably the best song I ever wrote. And I've written a few hundred. The VINNY band included my brother Johnny Fatello guitar, Greg Nesto bass, Javier Pico Keyboards, and Peter Goutzos drums. I hope you like both the video and the soundtrack. Come on MARIA!!!!!

AUGEASTER 8-30-31-2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

With all the recent Hurricane activity as of late I had put this footage on the back burner. It's that end of August Nor'easter that we had on the 30th and 31st of August. I was surprised when doing the edit at just how good the waves were that swell. There's some really good surf in this edit. It's all local. Both the talent and the surf. I used the cool Beautiful People sampling Hendrix tunes. And once again, it all flows.

I'll be busy shooting JOSE and MARIA in the next few days, meanwhile, take
a short trip back to last month and enjoy AUGEASTER.

IRMA 9-9-17 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

Me and the newest Inductee into the "East Coast Hall Of Fame" Kevin F. Grondin went south to meet up with the first swell from Hurricane IRMA.
The water was warm and green, and the boys were all over it. The surfers that I know who appear in this film are: Kevin Grondin, Kody Grondin, Robbie Goodwin, Sam, Liam, Jared Veltsos, Max Fatello, and Jesse Gould. The music is by my old band SEMPER FI and it was recorded back in 1986 on a 4-track machine in our rehearsal place. The songs are GIMME SHELTER and DON'T GIVE UP (an original song I wrote).

The musicians in this version of Semper Fi are :Ralph Fatello guitar and lead vocals, Rich Appel bass and backing vocals, Eric Brown drums and backing vocals, and Greg Lyons keyboards.
