HAPPY VETERANS DAY TO ALL THE
LIVING AND PAST VETERANS.
HAPPY 247th BIRTHDAY TO THE
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS!
|
|
This Veterans Day marks my 53rd year as a Veteran.
I was 17 yrs old when I enlisted in the Marine Corps. I didn't have a hair on my face. My parents had to sign for me. My recruiter at the time promised my parents that I would be a COMBAT ARTIST. In other words, I would have been "back in the rear with the gear" drawing pictures. I would never see combat. That's what GYSGT McGuirk promised my mother and father in 1968. But when I shot EXPERT in Parris Island? And not just expert, but the highest shooter in my platoon and company. I was awarded the LEATHERNECK AWARD and was promoted to PFC as the High Shooter. You can see all of this by clicking on the image above.
When it came time to hand out MOS (Military Occupation Specialty)
they figured I would be better suited carrying a rifle than a pencil. If you click on the image above you can see this collage in a better light. That whole story will be prominently written about in the book I am writing about my life. I was not kidding when I said I did not have a hair on my face or chin. In fact, one of our Drill Instructors used me as a living mannequin. SSGT Mayville actually drew on my face with a marker to show the others in our platoon where to shave. I had to stand in the head (bathroom) while the other recruits walked up to me to see where they should apply their shaving cream. Pretty funny.
To be perfectly honest with you all, by the time I got to Vietnam (at 18yrs) I still had no facial hair.
I had the typical baby face. I had like one long single hair on my chin. I could dry shave that thing. Hell, I could cut it off with my K-bar (knife).
Truth be told, I was not the youngest one in my platoon. We had a young 16yr old Puerto Rican kid from NYC in my squad. Tony Beltran was just a kid. I mean we were all kids, but Tony really looked like a kid.
I can remember seeing Tony (on the right with the PRC25 radio) with his fatigues being too big, his helmet was too big, his boots were too big.
Turns out he lied about his age to join the Marines. And back in the 60's they just wanted bodies, so they turned a blind eye to the kids trying to enlist.
That's me in the middle with Cpl Lee Carter leaning against the tree. I lost touch with all the guys in my platoon. We all came back to "the World" one by one. I hope Tony made it back OK. Lee went home before we did, so I know he made it. I'd love to be able to speak with them again. To hear their voices and to find out what kind of lives they lived. Or, maybe I really don't want to know, for fear of finding out that something terrible might have happened.
This is me firing my M-14. I got to carry the 14 because of my shooting ability. The M-14 was much heavier than the M-16, but was far more accurate.
While I was not an official sniper MOS, I was the designated sniper in my platoon. My friends used to call me a "Dinging Mutha****er". I'd always laugh when they called me that.
People have asked me over the years, why did I enlist at such a young age?
The truth is, I was always around veterans. My dad was a WWII SEABEE
vet who served in the South Pacific. All my uncles were WWII vets on both sides of my family. And my youngest uncle Angelo was a KOREAN WAR Vet. He got the Bronze Star in Korea for valor and bravery. In fact, all the kids in our neighborhood had parents who served during WWII and KOREA. Practically every house on every street had a veteran living there. And all the kids in my neighborhood went to Vietnam.
From 1965-to 1975 we all rotated to and back from Southeast Asia.
This is a clever photoshop of my dad in GUAM 1943 and me in NAM 1970.
I tried to make it look like we were in the same photo. We did both have salty looking covers (hats). It's funny because I did end up being in some places that he served. Like The Philippines and Okinawa. We both walked on the same the same ground.
Years later when I met Cory, I found out that her dad Jerry was a veteran too.
Jerry served in the 101st Airborne, USA. He jumped out of perfectly good airplanes. Cory's mom Judith jumped out of one too when they were together. Yikes. Jerry went on to make history in the GWOT. And speaking airplanes. My stepfather-in-law John was a Fighter Pilot in the Air Force. He retired as a Lt Col. He flew some of the fastest fighter planes in our country's arsenal. Pretty impressive. We are all proud of both Grandma and Grandpa Rastl.
Here's Judith and John with our son Max last week when they were here visiting last month. There's a lot of Military service on both sides of our family.
I know plenty of local veterans who are surfers. WE SERVED WE SURF.
Here's Col Tim Bailey USMC in Afghanistan. Tim did two tours in Afghanistan including being the recipient of the Bronze Star.
And my longtime friend Jay Hammer
who also retired as a full bird Colonel in the US ARMY. Jay served in Iraq and many other places around the globe. I have surfed many times with Jay over the years. We have been friends for a very longtime. We give each other a hard time about our branches of service, but I know (and he knows) that we will always have each other's backs.
WE SERVED. WE SURFED.
And Jay was/is
a great surfer. He was one of the best back in the day. Though he's slowed down (he's in his mid 60's) he still gets out there as much as possible. Why? Because he's a surfer. And REAL Surfers never quit. We just get longer boards and thicker wetsuits.
Local legend Joe Kutt, myself, and the late John McCain back in 2008.
John was a great man. One of the most honest and heroic men I have ever met. I worked on both of his presidential campaigns. And to this day, I feel as though he would have made a great president. RIP sir.
And speaking of Veterans. As in VETERAN SURFERS in their 70's and 60's. Myself, Johnny Meehan, Tony Berardini, and Markey J shared some really fun waves last week on 11-2-22 at that popular left. man, the laughs and rides were coming at such a rapid fire pace that our heads were spinning. One of the most memorable sessions for all of us. This is what Surfing is really all about. Surfing with good friends on a warm November Day.

I will never forget this day for as long as I live. 11-11-11. Veterans Day with Ed at 10th Street shooting the surf. Just a classic Day filled with great waves and rides and Ed and I just laughing all afternoon long. I really miss you Ed. You left us way too soon brother. There has been a big void here on the seacoast ever since you passed. But my promise to you and Kathy remains solid. As long as this Blog is posted, I will feature one of your pics here at your corner. Love you brother. Photo by Ed O'Connell

THE PATRIOTS are now 5-4 for the season.
They beat the COLTS 26-3 due in most part to their stingy DEFENSE led by this man.
JUDON is a BEAST! They say that DEFENSE wins championships. Good thing, because we STILL have a serious QB problem. But as long as our defense plays the way they do and our special teams rack up those 3 point Field Goals, I guess we're still in the hunt.
Meanwhile, our old QB pulled off a stunning come from behind win with just seconds on the clock. God it was such a bittersweet moment watching Brady orchestrate that last second drive down the field and win the game with virtually no time on the clock. We had that man for 20 years. And in that time we have enough memories to hold us all over until the end of time.
KSM Photoshop of the Week
Khaliddy is still trying to weasel his way into Gisele's broken heart. But so far she's not biting. She's too smart for the Old Windbag. Gisele is so NOT into The Sheik's BS. She has refused all the Goat skins and camel dung he's sent her. His guards have tried to set Ole Khaliddy straight. But he's like a long lost puppy. He wants to keep trying. Damn you Khaliddy. Let it go.
And so my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed).
*Note to self -must pick up a case of used Chocolate at Home Depot this week.

Yesterday-VIETNAM VETERAN ED O'CONNELL 1968.
Most surfers did not know that Ed was a Vietnam vet. They just thought he was an old Surf Photographer. Honestly? Ed saved the lives of so many grunts in Nam. He was also the sole survivor of a chopper crash when his Medevac chopper was shot down by the enemy. He lost all of his teeth in that crash. He never spoke about his wartime experiences to most people. But he and I were always talking about it. How could we not? Next to my late friend Joe Somogyi, Ed was someone I could talk to about my own demons. Ed passed away on July 1st, 2014. He is still missed by all of us who knew and loved him. I kept a daily Blog on my CATCH A WAVE FOR MOLLY surf campaign, when I surfed every single day for 365 consecutive days. Click on the Banner above to read entries of my daily journey. There's some really interesting and true experiences
that happened during that year. Some of which are to this day, unexplainable. Some are just mind blowing. But all true.
I started on July 26th, 2010 and ended on July 26th, 2011.
Some rainy Sunday, pour yourself a cup and go through the journal.
Pay close attention to the month of May in 2011. Read that month and let me know what you think of that. Be forewarned it will change you forever.
