Revisiting Hurricane Gloria of 1985. The return of Winter.
The Impeachment Proceedings of the 45th President.

This my friends is Jerry Law.

He's a New England native who now lives in Florida. He once lived up here in Northern New England and surfed our waves and, he's even shot his fair share of surf photos. Last year out of the blue I received a hand written letter from Jerry stating that he's an avid reader of the Blog, and wanted to send me photos from New England. The fact that he actually took the time to write me a hand written letter was unique in of itself.

But when he started to send me actual photographs? Well, that really caught my attention. His time on the computer is limited to his visits to the local library. But honestly? I actually enjoy the old school correspondence.
I suppose I'm showing my age. But I miss holding onto something like a hand written letter. Hell I miss holding a simple newspaper. I wish we all lived more like the days of old as to what we all live like today. Holding my phone as opposed to holding a hand written letter is just not the same.

Anyway, as you can see by the photo above Jerry sent me a series of photos that he took during Hurricane Gloria. I remember Gloria quite well. In fact, I made a Super 8mm movie about her. And I have several photos from Gloria as well. One of which I posted this week in the YESTERDAY section. I plan on someday copying the movie GLORIA onto a digital format to be able to share with you all. But until that time, let's enjoy what Jerry Law sent me.

Because getting hand written notes/letters are so rare I thought I'd share this letter from Jerry. As you can see he sent this back in September. I had been waiting for the right time to scan his pics and his letter. This is that time.

First of all Jerry I think your pics were great. Like this one below.

I'm not concerned with lack of quality that you noted. Some of my pics and films from back in the day suffer from the same kinds of things you listed. The fact that you took the time to document these swells speaks volumes of your dedication. And you're right. There were not many of us around back in the day to document the surf.

I can name on one hand the number of people who took the time to shoot. Ron Freeman and Ed O'Connell come to mind. Then later Maureen McNamara. So there were only a handful of us from the 60's to the 80's. We were a rare breed back then. But thank god we did what we did. Otherwise it would only be "sea stories."

That's actually an old Marine Corps saying. "Sea Stories."

But it basically means the same. Talking story and embellishing the truth for affect is something that surfers have been doing since Day One. But actual photos and Movies from back then can only add to the truth, or shine a light on the "bullshit" factor. What's the old saying? Every picture tells a story. Check out Jerry's cool photo gallery down in the photo section. It's worth the look.

Hurricane Gloria September 27th, 1985. Unfortunately, 8 died.

As you can see from this image, Gloria went slamming right through New England. There was significant damage, but, the surf was good. And that's always been the dilemma with these kinds of storms. We all want the big and perfect surf, but not the death and destruction that comes with these tropical dreams/nightmares. Dammed if you do and dammed if you don't.

Speaking of insane weather.

The weather on November 12th, 2019 was one for the ages. Man was that a bitterly cold wind and low temps kind of day. It went from Fall to a deep freeze that was more like January or February. Crazy.

I shot the surf early on and it was clean and fun. But then the wind came. It was gusting out of the Northwest like a howling Alberta Clipper. Bitingly cold.

I was out in the woods that day, and there were snow flurries and frigid temps.

This was a photo I shot at the end of the day. I look at it and instantly feel the cold, but you might not see or feel what we who live here in Northern New England felt that day. And you should be thankful.

It was the kind of weather that sends people to warmer climates. Here's what I've learned. The older you get-the colder you get. And make no mistake about it, I was cold on the 12th and the 13th. Winter Is Coming.

"Surfing and Warm Weather Heals Wounds."

I've been having fun going through the old Blog posts finding Ed photos. Thank God for the archives. This is Peter Stokes. Hard to believe this was 10 years ago. Photo by Ed O'Connell

Now for Some Local, National and International News
Look can we all just face the facts here. 45 is in the middle of a bona fide impeachment. This is not some anti-45 comment. This is for real. The president of the United States is embroiled in a Impeachment inquiry. He's in the same company as these two. Nixon and Clinton. I did not like either one of them. But 45 is now and forever associated with them. Like it or not. This is where he has put himself. There's only one person to blame 45.

Then he has the gall to tweet out juvenile tweets during Ambassador Yovanovitch's testimony? It's all so embarrassing.

She got a standing ovation after her testimony. Respect.

ESM (Eastern Surf Magazine) using a READY MAG format did the Best of Ralph's Pic. And while they couldn't possibly use everything thing I've ever done, they did manage to put up some 50 pics of mine, plus two videos. And I was truly humbled by their intro. COMING FATHER'S DAY 2020.

While I was making the GRANITE GIRLS video I came up with this project and concept. It's never been done before. As hard as that seems to be. I'm onto yet another never been done before Surf Movie concept. This will be an overview of Surfer dads and their sons. It's a work in progress and I'm hoping to get as many dads and their sons as possible in this movie.

I kept a daily BLOG when I surfed everyday during my
CATCH A WAVE FOR MOLLY. (Click On the Banner below)
Started on July 26, 2010 ENDED July 26, 2011.
A Wave a day for 365 consecutive days.

Yesterday- Hurricane Gloria in Hampton, NH 9-28-85.
(Below) I only have a few pics of me surfing that I actually like. This is one of them. I like the deep carve in the wave face and I can remember this particular wave as well. My late friend Thom Moore took this photo. Thom was a good man. He passed a few years ago. He engineered my LP and he really got into surfing. Life is short my friends.

HALLOWEEN SWELL 2019 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

I was trying to compare the HALLOWEEN SWELL of 1991 with this one the HALLOWEEN SWELL of 2019. But truth be told, there's no real comparison, other than they both fell on or around Halloween. Both days were windy. And both days had overhead surf. But the waves were bigger in '91 than '19. And the surf lasted an entire week in 1991 and only the one day in 2019. Still, it was a neat concept, the two Halloween storms. I will say that the thing that really got me was, there was only ONE PERSON out at 8:00 AM! ONE PERSON! Are you kidding me? It was weird seeing NO VEHICLES parked along the wall that morning. More people eventually went out, but for a while there, it looked like a Ghost Town. Any way, there's some cool looking waves here. Enjoy my 270th Video! *Watch in 1080

NESTOR 10-17-19 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

So I missed the Big day (10-16-19). But, I caught the "Golden" tail end of NESTOR the very next morning October 17th, 2019. And it was truly a Golden Session. The surfers that I rememberer: Kody Grondin, Lars Hamilton, Kainalu Nichols, Max Fatello, Crowley Gentile, Kevin Grondin, and a handful of others. The music is the cool mix tape of JH by Beautiful People. I love that CD. I also did something I rarely do and that is, I used a bunch of stills to create a sequence. I've done it before in the past and it seems to work well with this edit.

This October and really since September has been amazing. I've almost lost count of how many Tropical Storms, Hurricanes, and Nor'easters we've had. Suffice it to say, it's been significant.
Let's hope November is much like it's little brother October.
Hope you like this edit.

BOMBOGENESIS from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

On October 17th, 2019 the surfers from the Northeast experienced a rare and powerful BOMB-O-GENESIS (Google it). Wild, windy, cold, and dark. The surf was real though. Check it out. Watch in 1080. The music is by local Maine Surfer, Bill Pierce. Check out his music on billpierce.bandcamp.com

MELISSA from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

What happens when a Tropical storm mates with a Nor'easter? Well, five days of waves is one thing. I shot on Day one and again on Day four. Yeah, I missed the big days. But I got the cleanest of the five. On Saturday October 12th, 2019 a good friend Markey J took off on a Bomb and got clobbered by his own board. The pics are at the end of this edit. But be forewarned, they are graphic. I posted the pics because I think it's important to remember to protect your head when you lose it out there. Too many head injuries the last 10 years or so. This one was one of the worse.
Another inch or two to the left and we would be planning a paddle for Markey. Stay frosty out there.
If anyone knows who the long haired Goofy foot from NY or NJ is please let him know.
Music is by AB.

Little LORENZO and his Ladder from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

On October 1st, 2019 I did something that I've never done before. I carried a 10' step ladder out onto the slippery rocks and kelp to shoot the waves from Hurricane Lorenzo. The waves were just OK. They never really materialized the way they were predicting. But, the ladder? It was a major breakthrough as far as surf photography goes. Yeah it was awkward to carry, especially seeing how I had a back pack with two of my cameras. I took a lot of grief over this. Mostly from my family. They all thought I'd fall and break my neck.

I told them "They laughed at the Wright Brothers..." Ha ha.

Any way, my dear friend John Carden provided the cool soundtrack. I was looking for some Italian opera when out of the blue he sent me this track. It's pretty cool. *There was one negative aspect to this edit though. Some old guy on a Boogie Board was hassling everyone out there. He kept getting in the way and was just being a jerk. He caused one of the riders to lose a fin. And it was the only dark spot of what should have been a fun session. Oh well. Hope you enjoy Lorenzo.

HUMBERTO from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

Tropical Storm Humberto produced two days of overhead surf to Northern New England. Friday September 20th, and Saturday September 21st, 2019.
I shot from the land and in the water. There are too many surfers to name. However, the music is by The CARS, VINNY, and MIGUEL TITO RODRIGEUZ. I dedicated to the edit to the late Ric Ocasek.
May He Rest In Peace.

DORIAN from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

On September 7th and 8th, 2019 Hurricane DORIAN came whipping up the Eastern Seaboard after virtually wiping out the Bahamas. The death and destruction was immense. But...there's that silver lining that comes with all storms of that magnitude, and that is Perfect Surf. From Florida, Carolinas, Jersey, Rhode Island, and up to the Northeast, DORIAN provided the surfers with their first taste of the Hurricane season. This footage was shot in Northern New England on the 7th and the 8th of September. While it never really got BIG, it did have it's moments. I think I captured a few in this edit. Now I know it's long compared to the 60 second Insta edits you youngsters seem to like, but I don't care. I make surf movies, not surf commercials. This is a first as far as soundtracks go as well. I used a song from each of my three bands. The NOR'EASTERS, SEMPER FI, and The VINNY BAND. It's a first. I closed the edit with a song called HURRICANE by my favorite band, King's X. There's too many surfers to name. There's a good chance you are in this if you were out when I was standing on the beach shooting on Saturday or out in the water on Sunday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Ryan Jackson! And Happy Birthday today September 14th, 2019 to Max Fatello. I love you Mackey!
