The Connection Between The ALAMO And The WAR In Ukraine. Plus Two NEW Videos.

 



One hundred and eighty six years ago. On this date, March 6th, 1836
183 defenders of the Alamo, in San Antonio Texas, fell to over 4,000 Mexican troops. El Deguello (NO QUARTER) was played by the buglers at dawn. Signaling that NO MAN would be allowed to surrender. Every single man was killed in the Battle. No mercy.

The defenders, were vastly outnumbered by the troops of Mexican soldiers, under the command of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. They attacked at dawn, while the volunteers, made up of mostly Texans (Texicans), and men from all over the United States (Including New Hampshire) were sound asleep when the bugles blaring in the night woke them. Among the defenders were Davey Crockett, Jim Bowie, and Colonel William Barrett Travis.

The commander of the Alamo Col. William Barrett Travis penned his last letter to Sam Houston pleading for help writing "I shall Never Surrender nor retreat...it's Victory or Death!" Houston never came. Leaving the defenders to fend for themselves. The whole battle lasted only an hour. The defenders were simply overrun, by the sheer force of the Mexican infantry and cannon fire.

The Battle Cry "REMEMBER THE ALAMO!" was born by Sam Houston and his Texan command, at the Battle of San Jacinto. Where Houston and his men avenged the defenders who were killed at the Alamo. At that battle, Santa Anna was captured by Houston and his men. The result of that battle was Texas won it's independence from Mexico in April of 1836.

The irony of The Alamo and Ukraine has not been lost on me.

Nor should it be on you. This is me at The Alamo in 2015. Cory and I went there to check off one of the TOP FIVE BUCKET LIST ITEMS. As a young boy I read every single book on The Alamo. I saw every TV series (Fess Parker on the Walt Disney series as Davey Crockett), I saw all the movies (John Wayne as Davey in THE ALAMO) and my all time favorite Billy Bob Thornton as Davey Crockett in the amazing remake of The Alamo.
So it's safe to say I know a little bit about this battle.



See that sign in the upper right hand corner? That's where Cory and I stayed. The CROCKETT HOTEL. I kept saying to her that "we are sleeping on hallowed ground here." It was a great trip all around.



President Zelensky is a modern day William Travis.
"I shall Never Surrender nor retreat...it's Victory or Death!"
So wrote Travis. And so too does Zelensky in his telecast to the United States and to NATO. Zelensky will NOT surrender. Nor Retreat. It is literally Victory or death. Meanwhile, the is US turning up the heat on the sanctions. But as we all can plainly see, the sanctions are not stopping Putin. The only thing going in the favor of Ukraine, is their willingness to fight for their very freedom and democracy. How long will they be able to hold up under this continued onslaught of Russian power? How long will the world look away?

UKRAINE NEEDS OUR HELP! NOW! RIGHT NOW!



Last week I posted about the show with Johnny A. It was called A. to Beatles.
So whenever I saw this meme on Facebook, I knew I had to share it. It's true they need our help. They need NATO and the US to help them now.

And speaking of Facebook.
I posted this last week. You can click on the image below to see a larger version of it. It's all true. So many veterans from WWII to the current GWOT are feeling these exact feelings as I am. Especially in light of Biden's disastrous exit from Afghanistan last August. That one is still stinging.



I also posted this on a private Marine Corps page. As you can imagine, I got some pretty positive comments from my brother and sister Marines.

BACK ON THE ICE WITH MY FRIENDS.



I never drilled a hole in the ice, nor have I ever pulled a cold pickerel out of that frozen river. But I sure enjoy their company. They get a kick out of some of my stories. The stories that will be in my book. One of which is from the title DON'T EVER BUY A F***ING MONKEY.



For those who might not know, I had a large male 3 yr old Woolly Monkey named JoJo, who pretty much ruined my life in 1971. See the pic above. Notice that rip in my jeans? That's where he bit me many times over the course of 7 months, when I had him. It was a FREAKING nightmare.

But that story, prompted me to remind myself, that a dear friend Sam George (pictured below)...



...whom I had told the Monkey Story to in the late 70's, informed me that he had shared that story while on the Pro Surfing Tour in the early 80's. He called me in the early 80's and said, "Ralph I've gotten so much mileage out of your story about JoJo. The surfers love it." He also told me he shared the story with a writer for the TV show, the Simpsons. And that writer, wrote a few episodes about Homer and his monkey MoJo. Perhaps you saw them?



It's all 100% true. Homer and MoJo was based after me and JoJo. DOH!
This is one of those "You can't make this shit up" stories. I was saying to these guys (who are mostly in law enforcement) that "It's good that you all can laugh at some of the crazy shit that has happened in my life. Even though it's at my expense and misery." It's all good my friends. It's all good.

NOW FOR SOME LOCAL AND NATIONAL NEWS

The War in Ukraine is showing no signs of slowing down. Thousands of innocent civilians have been killed. The Russians are brutal in their indiscriminate ways of targeting non military buildings, and shooting non combatants. It should be of no surprise to anyone that the Russian tactics defy human civility. Just awful, horrific, aimless killing of civilians. War is a terrible thing. The Russians killed an 18month old baby. There is life. There is death. And the only difference between the two, is one single breath. This must stop.

The sanctions are not working quick enough. This man, President Zelensky is pleading for help. And yet, we all stand by and watch the death and destruction of an entire country. How can we live with ourselves? There is right and there is wrong. And if we as loving human beings can't see that this is 1000% wrong? Then we are all lost. With over one million refugees and more coming, we need to stand up and do something beyond the sanctions.


And we (the world) need to do it now. RIGHT NOW!


This man is PLEADING FOR HELP. This is a REAL LEADER. NOT that idiot in Moscow. And NOT our own president. This is what a REAL Leader looks like. Now I realize what's at stake. Putin is threatening anyone who interferes with his aggressive action as an act of war. And he has his nuclear warheads armed and aiming at us. And they are on high alert. But at what point do we do something beyond the sanctions? Is the risk of a nuclear war that real? Have we lost our collective nerve? Will we continue to slap Putin's wrist, while Ukraine is demolished before our very eyes killing thousands of civilians? Women and children?



Ideally, someone has to get to him from the inside. Just like they tried with Hitler. Somebody needs to get to this madman and take him out. Like I said last week. And I have been saying this since 9-11, and that is, we will all witness in our lifetime, a nuclear bomb or device go off somewhere in this world. Is that coming? With madmen like this clown? Yeah, it could very well be coming. So shouldn't we act first? I'm not saying a preemptive nuclear strike, but we should FACE THIS TIGER with our own Teeth and Claws.

To do nothing, is a regret that we will never live down.

The STATE OF THE UNION Address.



I don't know why anyone would want this job. But having said that, I think that Biden did an OK job last week, considering the world as we know it, is basically a total shit show. Some of which is his fault (re: Afghanistan). He may have bought himself some time with his address. I still think he's a one term president, just like his predecessor. He was tolerable. But that woman in the blue dress behind him? What in God's name was that fist rubbing act when Biden mentioned the "burn pit" veterans? Are you kidding me? That was down right creepy. There's gotta be a pill out there that she can take to correct that kind of public display. Weird shit.



These two? I swear, between the woman in blue and these two? It's hard to tell who was more annoying. Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert were so incredibly annoying by cackling all night long trying to disrupt Biden, that it became something so incredibly juvenile, that they really should have been sent to a corner for a time out. Our State of The Union is in trouble with these three loose cannons.

Dan Lanio Memorial Scholarship Fund

This community is amazing. The outpouring of support for Dan “Desi” Lanio has been emotionally overwhelming. It warms our heart to see all of the tributes and memories that you all have shared over the past few days. Many out there have sought out ways to honor the man who brought so much joy to all of us, and Experience Hampton has been working with people from all over the Town of Hampton to create the Dan Lanio Memorial Scholarship Fund.

This fund, will make a scholarship available for the WHS Extended Learning Opportunities Program (ELO). A couple of years ago, Desi raised close to $4,000 to start the first scholarship for ELO. This program was near and dear to Desi, as was supporting all the students from Winnacunnet High School.

Experience Hampton offered to accept donations to create this fund, and ensure that the donations being made were channeled to the official “Dan Lanio Memorial Scholarship Fund”. Please know that we will ensure your contributions will only benefit the student recipients of this fund, and not be used for any other operational expenses.

As our way to honor Dan “Desi” Lanio, Experience Hampton will be contributing $2,500 as the initial opening donation. Desi was a key member in creating Experience Hampton, and we are truly grateful to the legacy he left behind, and we will do our best to honor his memory moving forward.

Yesterday- AN ODE TO JOE. March 1950 to May 1978.
Today would have been Joe Somogyi's 72nd Birthday. March 2nd, 1950. He passed away in 1978 from exposure to Agent Orange while serving deep in the jungles and mountains of Vietnam in 1969. Joe was a bona fide hero. At the time, Joe was my best friend.

We did everything together. Surfing and music.

We were two Vietnam vets who loved surfing and Rock & Roll. He was solely responsible for me to continue to play the guitar in the early 70's when I was given an "ultimatum" by the person I was with at the time. She wanted me to quit surfing, and playing Rock and Roll, and to get a real job. Say what? Joe basically told me to tell her to "F--- off!" He told me "You have talent, keep playing that guitar, and we're going to surf forever!" Thank God I listened to him. Can you imagine if I stayed with her?

Anyway, I wrote this song about him in the early 80's. The video is a collection of stills and old super 8mm movie clips of Joe and our old surf crew back in the early to mid 70's. The song is performed by my band The Nor'easters. Ralph Fatello guitar and vocals, Johnny Fatello guitar, Mike White Bass, and Lenny Dunn Drums. Produced by David Robinson at Synchro Sound in Boston, Massachusetts.

GO SLO GO PRO 15 Years with the Go Pro.mp4

THIS MIGHT BE BORING to some of you. It's 15 years of Go Pro footage that I've shot using the Hero II, III, and V. It's just under 30 minutes in length and 90% of the footage is slow motion (hence the boring comment).
Truth be told, you have to use Slow Motion when editing water footage. It just happens too fast otherwise. And you lose the detail and beauty of the waves themselves. I have always been fascinated with the mechanics
of a wave. How they form and break, and of course, the pure stunning beauty of the empty hollow wave. This is not Pipeline or Chopes. And it's NOT New Jersey. Far from out it.
It's mostly fun sized waves being surfed by local surfers. My biggest regret is I didn't capture all of my friends. It's 15 years worth. And while I love being in the water shooting, my best footage has always been shot on dry land.
In my honest opinion, you can't beat these little cameras.
They shoot great HD quality video and they are fun to use.

The fourth consecutive winter storm video that I shot and edited in January of 2022. This one was named KENAN. It was also known as a Bomb-O-Genesis, or Bomb Cyclone, or a Big Ole Nasty Nor'easter. We got over 2' of snow with high winds. The surf never got really huge, but it was big enough to warrant me shooting.

Saturday January 15th, 2022. One of the coldest days that I can remember
(and I've been around this block of ice a few times).
Single digits, with a windchill factor way below zero.
I got Frost Nip on my fingers. Took me hours to get some life back in them.
But having said that, the local crew were out and making it one of the
most dramatic videos I've ever shot.
I'm still cold just thinking about it.

This is clearly a sign of the times we live in. I shot this footage the morning of 12-9-21, and did the edit the same afternoon. And less than 9 hours later, I finished the edit and posted it on social media.
This would have taken me weeks to finish back in the day when I was
shooting in Super 8mm.

The traditional Surfer's Paddle for Legendary NH Surfer/Skier Greg Smith 
on October 24th, 2021 at The Rocks. This was one of the Top 5 Paddles I've ever been involved in. Greg Smith was a true legend. The video is long compared to most edits, but to hear the true Greg Smith stories is worth it. Thank you to all who helped out in the paddle. The 13th Annual HIT THE BEACH. August 27th, 2021.
After being canceled the year before due to COVID 19 the HTB event
was on this year. Although the surf was not that big, it was enough to
run the event. And run it we did, and it was great!

This is the updated trailer with additional footage from PAX. The named storms of Winter 2013-2014 are featured in this impressive winter season of snow, surf, and freezing temps. The local surfers here in New England have been charging all winter.
