CORONAVIRUS and FRIDAY THE 13TH!
!
WHAT ELSE COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?

My dear friends, we are living in unprecedented times. This whole COVID-19 has turned the world upside down. l know this selfie of me wearing this mask, is just me being silly. And while on the one hand it is in fact silly, on the other hand, it is anything but. The CORONAVIRUS has taken the world by storm. I don't have to tell you about the severity of what's happening around the Globe. Unless you really do depend on me for your world news. If that's the case, we're in bigger trouble than I originally thought.

Truth is, I was wrong about this thing. Dead wrong.

I made fun of it. I joked about it continuously, hell I'm still joking about it. But my joking about stuff like this can only be explained through my gallows humor, or more specifically, my military humor. Most veterans that I know joke about things like this because, well, we've seen worse. And quite frankly, something like this pales in comparison to some of the things we have witnessed. But having said that, I am well aware of the real possibilities of this virus, and what it is capable of doing to our society.

But when my wife comes home from the Super Market, and tells me that entire shelves of toilet paper have been ravaged from the store, I have to wonder.

What the hell does everyone need with all that toilet paper?

I mean did I miss something? Why all the TP? Is the Coronavirus a gastrointestinal disorder? Are we all going to be shitting ourselves from now until Kingdom Come? Is that what this is? Because I had heard it was all upper respiratory. You know, Flu-like symptoms. Cold, coughing, and pneumonia like. Am I getting fed some misinformation here?

And not for nothing but, shouldn't someone alert the President that he's been in contact with three individuals who have tested positive for the Coronavirus?
I mean shouldn't he be tested? Like now? Can you imagine if the leader of
the Free World actually ended up with the Coronavirus? Hello?

The man with the "MAKE BRAZIL GREAT AGAIN" hat has tested positive.

And shouldn't VP Mike Pence also be tested? Look, I'm no doctor, and I'm certainly not a scientist when it comes to this stuff, but I do know precaution signs when I see them. And this? This has red flags in your freaking face!

And if that wasn't scary enough, Ivanka Trump is seen standing next to Peter Hutton (pink tie) who also tested positive for COVID-19. And look who else is there, Bill Barr himself. THEY ALL NEED TO GET TESTED so they don't get others infected. I mean Good Lord people, we're talking about the entire administration being at risk here. Not to mention that it's the elderly who are most at risk. And 45 is in his 70's. He's not exactly a prime specimen of being in good health and shape.

Am I wrong about this? I'm not trying to get political here, I'm genuinely concerned about the leaders of our country getting sick or worse. So when 45 comes out spouting the nonsense he does about "Knowing all about the coronavirus" I have to step back and take note. Is he serious? WTF?

Contrary to popular belief, I care about our country. We all should.

If things don't get turned around in a hurry, I think that COVID-19 will be 45's undoing. It could very well end up being his Achilles heel. Next November will be very telling.

And if this wasn't scary enough, how about the fact that Hollywood actor and Oscar winner Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson both tested positive for the coronavirus. They got it in Australia where they are filming a movie
about Elvis Presley.

This is even getting too real for REALITY TV.

And another thing, if Tom Hanks and his wife end up really getting sick, or worse? Then all bets are off. I hope and pray that none of them end up in any of those scenarios. But the writing is on the wall. COVID-19 will be around until further notice. NO CONCERTS. NO SPORTING EVENTS. NO LATE NIGHT TV. NO SCHOOL. NO WORK. NO NOTHING. And MOST IMPORTANTLY, NO TOILET PAPER! DOH!!

It's almost like the END OF THE WORLD kind of stuff.

And if things weren't scary enough, FRIDAY THE 13TH CAME and it was all par for the course. Scary skies and clouds. I kid you not. Look at the Gallery of pics I shot on Friday March 13th, 2020.

Pretty, pretty, pretty scary.

The clouds looked like little devils and witches dancing on the horizon.

But...things did get better throughout the afternoon. This little Casper The Friendly Ghost like cloud showed up when the sun finally popped out.

By the end of the day, the skies were blue, and the clouds had these nice warm tones about them. It was almost as if the "Wicked Witch Of the West" herself had been killed. And Dorothy and her three companions were all going back to Kansas. Always look for the silver lining in the dark clouds.

Or as I am fond of saying, "I look for that Patch of Blue" on those cold gray
and windy days. Don't worry, things will get better.

Speaking of Patch. Here he is "pointing" out the New Blog sponsor.

This is a shot of Bryan Johnson on March 6th, 2010 And it was taken from "Ed's Corner". The REAL Ed's corner. He used to set up in the cove of two of our premier point breaks. I shot from this exact angle the other day (3-13-20) and I did it in his memory. So you see, there really was an Ed's corner before this one. He owned that spot. Photo by Ed O'Connell

Now for Some Local, National and International News
So it's real people. It doesn't get any more serious than this. Only time will tell how this all plays out, in the meantime, we all need to play by the rules. This is no BS. Well...you know what I mean. It is and it isn't. But one thing's for sure, Life as we once knew it has changed. Suck it up bunky, it's gonna get bumpy up ahead.

Those were two big words. NATIONAL EMERGENCY.

Hey that's what 45 said. "Two Big Words." You can't make this stuff up. Let's face it, the man is not a wordsmith. Unless he has a telprompter with big fonts in his face, when he strays from the helpful teleprompter, he gets himself in trouble. Ugh.

But scenes like this are not only BIG but scary.

Speaking of big, I really hope the PEACE Treaty with The Taliban lasts longer than it did on HOMELAND. That show is a little too close to reality sometimes. But for the sake of the families of these lost heroes, PLEASE KEEP THE PEACE.

The HEROES of POST 9-11. The REAL NAVY SEALS of the Movie LONE SURVIVOR. May their souls Rest in Peace.

Bummer, I was really looking forward to seeing this with my brother Johnny. We both watched THE BEATLES on the ED SULLIVAN Show on February 9th, 1964 on an old B&W TV in
the family den. That same night I told him that we would be in a band together some day. The next day I made cut-out cardboard guitars. I made a Hofner (violin) bass and Rickenbacher guitar.
I was Paul and he was John. Those were fond memories.

We ended up playing in bands together since 1971.

Hopefully they will reschedule the show soon.

Mikel from Brian Nevins on Vimeo.

"A visual hang with New Hampshire shaper and surfer Mikel Evans through the changing moods of a New England winter." Brian Nevins.

I'm sorry Brian, but this is more than a visual hang. This is a work of art. Both behind the lens and out in the water. I remember when Brian told me he was going to make the switch from stills to video, and was a bit apprehensive. I told him it's basically the same. The only difference is, you hold the trigger down longer. He already has the incredible eye for light, composition, and action. The creative talent is already there. To me? I saw the transition as being seamless. And I was right. This video proves it. As far as Mikey Evans? Again, the talent was already in place. Mikey Evans is the new Mikey Moran. Don't get me wrong, Moran is still King, but Mikey is that younger version of him. And this combination NEVINS & EVANS? It's a must see.
The music is a great score as well. Just watch the damn video and see and hear for yourselves. Well done all around gents.

For LOVE & WAVES from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

Happy Valentines Day! The trailer for the movie FOR LOVE and WAVES. The first ever movie about the unique relationship between couples who surf together. Featuring all local surf couples from New England. Ever since I can remember, surfers have always fantasized about finding a mate who you could share your love of surfing with. Don't get me wrong, I am perfectly happy and content with my wife who does not surf. But the thought of having a girlfriend/wife or boyfriend/husband who surfs is in a word intriguing. Though, I would imagine, that it's not at all what it seems to be on the surface. I mean, once you start having children, everything changes. Mom and dad can't both be out in the water when Timmy or little Suzie needs a diaper change. All of a sudden the fantasy becomes reality. So this documentary will look beyond the surface of couples who surf, and dig a little deeper into their world. Fascinating stuff. With an all original music soundtrack this latest SURF FREE OR DIE movie should turn some heads and hopefully turn more couples onto surfing. COMING SOON from Ralph's Pic and SFOD. For LOVE and WAVES. Watch in 1080

John (JT) Taylor 1979-1989 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

Back in 1978 JT and I lost a good friend to cancer. Joe Somogyi was a Vietnam vet and passed away after 6 months of being diagnosed. We needed a break from our sorrow. We needed to go surfing somewhere other then New Hampshire. JT picked out a small Island in the Caribbean called Tortola BVI. We went down there not knowing anything about the surf potential. But what we found was a magical place, where we met and became friends for life with two California surfers. Jeff Chamberlain and Sam George. The surf was great. The trip was a trip of a lifetime for the two of us. This all happened in January of 1979.

The footage you see here in Tortola was shot by me and JT. Back in the day, we took turns shooting each other.
It's old super 8mm and the camera work is spotty at best. The flickering and dirt and dust add to the ambiance of this old footage. Same with the NH footage. It's old. And we must of shown these old reel to reel flicks a million times back in the day.

The second half of this movie is of JT and friends surfing the ROCKS. I have so many old reels of movies, and I will eventually get them on disk and online. But suffice it to say, this is just scratching the surface of what I have. There's more , way more to come. *You can clearly see JT's powerful carves and bottom turns. And he had the BEST kick out ever!. The man was a powerful surfer. Just raw power. And his humor was just as raw.

But we all loved him. And we will all miss him terribly. Somehow, I think he is on some rare reef, maybe it's a left, or maybe it's a right. Or maybe it's like the ROCKS and has both. But I can see him now, taking off deep behind the boil, and just carving those deep gouges as only he could, and finishing each wave with that huge and powerful kick out. You were something JT. Nobody surfed like you.

Rest in Peace JT. We love you.

SALSWALLA from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

On January 26th, 2020 the NH and Mass coastlines were hit with a well groomed overhead swell with clean offshore winds. The air temps reached 50 degrees. That's crazy for this time of year in these parts. And the boys and the girls were out in full force. I missed the best of the best but managed to get a few good clips. The surfers are the usual suspects.
The soundtrack is by Jelly Jam.

TULSI and The Goofyfoots 1-1-20 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

On January 1st, 2020 Presidential Candidate TULSI Gabbard came to Hampton, NH to meet up with Dave Cropper owner of CINNAMON RAINBOWS and Lenny Nichols of the ESA-NNE to go Winter Surfing at the Wall at North Beach, NH. No other Candidate in the history of our country has ever gone surfing here before, let alone in the winter. This is a first. TULSI is the real deal. A War Veteran and a REAL Surfer. Anyone who has served our country in a war zone and who was willing to to paddle out into winter conditions here in New Hampshire has my respect and my vote.
TULSI has a "Soldier's Heart." She's the REAL DEAL.

NEW YEARS EVE 12-31-2019 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

The LAST Swell of 2019. There was size in the morning. But no sun to be found anywhere. I caught up with a handful of riders just to document the swell. The surfers that I know in this edit are: Jake Davidson, Perry Reynolds, Ian Dreher, Ryan Jackson, Mike Stanek, Alex Orestis, Artie Seaman, Skip Brunette, Johnny Reynolds and a few I couldn't ID. Music is by KOL.

DECEMBER ONE FIVE and ONE EIGHT TWENTYNINETEEN from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

This is two days in December. The 15th and the 18th. The 15th was as windy as I've ever seen it. And the 18th was just a nice day to be at the beach. I used BP again to move the visuals along. The surfers are: Kainalu Nichols, Max Fatello, Steve O'Hara, Jack Madden, Jon Kiskinis, Sarah Lang, and a few others I couldn't ID. Happy Holidays! *Watch in 1080 or better I shot this in 4K.

DECEMBER TO REMEMBER from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

From December 1st to December 3rd, 2019 we had a NON-STOP snow and wind event. We got hammered with over a foot of snow and it was the wet and heavy stuff. Like shoveling cement. That was down side, the good side was we got a really powerful overhead swell that had all the points and reefs firing on all cylinders. It was almost epic. I hate to use that phrase unless it's really EPIC quality. The boys were out in force and they all made the best of it. I chose my old friend and guitar God Robin Trower to provide the soundtrack. I shot this in 4K so adjust your video player accordingly. Hope you enjoy this DECEMBER TO REMEMBER! Happy Holidays Everyone!

BLACK FRIDAY from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

November 29th, 2019. "Black Friday" was a day for the locals to score some insane deals on getting some empty barrels. And the boys did just that. From the young Kainalu Nichols to the seasoned vet Kevin Grondin. The local boys had their day of great bargains. Nobody lost on this day. It was a BLACK FRIDAY to remember. And I know, I won't soon forget it.
