THE 19th ANNUAL SURF ART BLOG!

This is my 19th Annual SURF ART BLOG. Next year might be the last one I ever do. If it is? Ending on the 20th year will be memorable. I'll have to wait and see what kind of response I get. Clearly the interest has waned in the last few years. And quite frankly, I'm getting tired of hounding the artists themselves about getting their work to me on time. Some artists are too preoccupied with other things to submit their work to me by the deadline I need them. Too bad, because there are some very talented surf artists out there who should take advantage of this annual SURF ART BLOG. I am not complaining (well maybe a little). As a rule most artists are not very good at marketing themselves. They are, after all, artists, and most artists (like myself) are on a whole other level when it comes to promoting their work.

But alas my dear friends, I have a handful of artists here that will surely impress you all. Starting with my dear friend, fellow surfer and musician Stan Chew. Stan is one of my favorite Surf Artists. Stan sent in two pieces this year. And you can see them both in the SURF ART GALLERY. Meanwhile, I wanted to show you again this painting. It was gifted to me by Stan the night of the GRANITE GIRLS Premiere. "MORNING LIGHT DEEP IN THE BAY."

This painting hangs in my living room. It's one of my favorite pieces of art.
Click on the image above to visit Stan's website.

This beautiful piece of Surf Art is titled "ALOHA WAVE"
The artist is ZOE'
Acrylic on canvas
24 x 36
ZoeSurfArt@aol.com and you can find her on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/zoe.surfart

Alan Casagrande sent me this ultra cool Birthday card last week. I love his work. There's a bunch of his paintings in the SURF ART GALLERY.

MY FAVORITE NEW SURF ARTIST WAYAN BALIEX

Wayan Baliex has a great style of painting empty waves. Very unique and original. You can contact him through Facebook by clicking on the image above or by contacting me. Be sure to check out some of his cool paintings in the Surf Art Gallery. Click on the pic above to see his Facebook page.

Ed O'Connell was one of the most loved surf photographers in New England. A US ARMY Vietnam Veteran who saved the lives of so many ARMY Grunts in Nam in 68-69 as a Medic on board those Dust Off Hueys. He was a dear friend of mine.

When he passed on July 1st, 2014 I swore I'd keep his memory and legacy alive by giving him this weekly corner. He loved surfing and he loved taking photos of all the surfers. Not just those who could really stand out. He shot every one. As long as I shall live and breathe the salt air, there will be a corner dedicated to Ed.

ED'S CORNER July 30th, 2023

This pic was shot on July 4th, 2009. The surfer is Jared Veltsos. Jared is one of the best Goofy foots to ever come out of the NH Surf Scene. Photo by Ed O'Connell

HOT OFF THE PRESSES (literally)
Jim Sullivan spent 26 years writing for the Boston Globe and two decades more writing for national publications. He has interviewed and reviewed countless musicians, many of them multiple times. Access to such A-list stars is hard to come by in the first place, but Sullivan got to know many of them well enough to engage on a far more intimate level than journalists usually can or do.

The first volume of his music-writing anthology focuses on artists who came to prominence in the 1950s and ’60s. Twenty-one of them are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Rather than simply collect up previously published articles as they originally appeared, Sullivan combed through his archive to find everything he wrote about each artist and worked the pieces together into a more expansive time-passages view that chronicles their changing situations, outlooks and experiences.

Me and Jim Sullivan his book signing at the Paradise in Boston July 27th, 2023. I am really loving his book. So many great interviews. Click on his book cover above to get your copy.

AND SPEAKING OF NEW BOOKS. COMING THIS FALL. The long awaited book that I have been writing the last 10 years or so. Yes there will be a book signing. And I will let you all know in advance, where and when. Meanwhile Click on the image below to see a larger version. The book will be available in both hard cover and soft cover on AMAZON, BARNES & NOBLE, INGRAM, and KOBO PUBLISHING. It's been a long time coming. I'm pretty stoked about this project. 72 years in the making. Stay tuned.

Check out the RETURN of the 2023 HAMPTON BEACH COMEDY FESTIVAL . Now there's 5 days in August you need to put down on your calendars.

The HIT THE BEACH DAY is on Friday August 25th, 2023.

Hard to believe it's been 15 years of HIT THE BEACH.
This is going to be a big day at the beach. We are currently working with the State to get the beach cleaned up the day or two prior to the HTB day. As most of you know, we have had huge amounts of seaweed on that beach every year. It would be nice to have it clean for once.

We're just trying to get permission to allow Anthony Curro to bring his backhoe down at 18th Street. Otherwise we have to remove it all by hand again. And that is NO fun.

THIS IS SOMETHING I'VE NEVER DONE BEFORE.
I PAINTED FOUR DIFFERENT PAINTINGS IN TWO HOURS.

I am not a professional painter. In fact, I only paint empty waves. And I never use photos for reference unless I'm commissioned to do a certain break. Otherwise, all my paintings are from the millions of waves I've seen, surfed, and paddled by. I paint from memory.

Some of you will remember the GIRLS ON CURLS project back in May and June. They are are all headed off to college this coming month, and I thought I'd give them all a little reminder of the New Hampshire Seacoast.

This (above) is called 10th STREET and this is for regular foot Ava.

And this is called BARREL and this is for Goofy foot Alyssa.

This one is called PERFECT and this is for regular foot Christine

This is called GRINDING and this is for Goofy foot Elena.
I wouldn't suggest any of the other artists to try and pull this off. Though I admit once I got started it was pretty easy to finish, and it was fun doing the four paintings at once. Hey isn't that what I always say about surfing? Surfing is fun, and so is surf art.

“SURF ART HEALS ALL WOUNDS.”

ATTENTION ALL BARBIE FANS!

Last week when Mitch McConnell had that uncomfortable brain freeze? Just off camera was our boy Khaliddy. Somebody said that the Sheik dropped some dry ice down Mitch's adult depends and that's what caused him to freeze up. Damn you KSM!

And so my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed). *Note to self -must pick up a case of ADULT DEPENDS at Home Depot this week.

50 YEARS AGO. ME DURING MY SOPHOMORE YEAR AT THE ART INSTITUTE OF BOSTON.

For those who thought I never had long hair. I remember this year at college. I did learn so much at school and in life. My surfing adventures were just getting started as well, and so was my musical life. Everything was coming together for me. Photo c/o RALPH

I kept a daily Blog on my CATCH A WAVE FOR MOLLY surf campaign, when I surfed every single day for 365 consecutive days. Click on the Banner above to read entries of my daily journey. There's some really interesting and true experiences
that happened during that year. Some of which are to this day, unexplainable. Some are just mind blowing. But all true.

I started on July 26th, 2010 and ended on July 26th, 2011.

Some rainy Sunday, pour yourself a cup and go through the journal. Pay close attention to the month of May in 2011. Read that month and let me know what you think of that. Be forewarned it will change you forever.
