The First Hurricane Swell of the 2017 Season.
The insanity of Neo Nazis and the KKK... and a total Eclipse.

I can remember the last Hurricane Gert. My buddy Jacko and I were surfing Gert's waves at the wall. It was a special session because Jack's mother's name is Gert. Clearly, we had to surf her waves. And we did and man was that fun. This particular Gert was equally as fun but only down south. Thanks to the long arm of Cape Cod we were blocked by any southern swells trying to hit our shoreline. You either went south or you went north to catch the swell.

I sat around texting my friends asking where they might be. But being typical surfers, they turned a blind eye to me and went surfing without me. I'm not complaining...wait yes I am. These guys know what I do and how I do it. They also know that it would benefit them to let me know where they are surfing. Why? Because my photos and videos feeds their insatiable appetite for fame. Or semi fame. Trust me, they all want to have their pics taken. Same with video. But this time around they all had some kind of brain freeze.

They became surfers without a cause (or rather, a brain).

The only pics they got, were cell phone pics from one of their buddies. Cell phone pics. Like this one (above). While I had fully charged batteries, and all of my gear waiting to go. And, where they all ended up surfing, would have been ideal for some water pics as well.

The water was so warm down south. But alas my friends, my text messages and PM's fell of deaf ears and blind eyes.

They didn't answer any of my text messages for two days.

And look, it would be one thing if they haven't surfed in a while. Most of them had just gotten back from a 10 day Mexico trip that yielded some insane waves. And this was just a couple of weeks ago. So they shouldn't have been jonesing that bad. So what to do? Well, I ended up shooting at home in less than desirable conditions. Certainly no where near the size they got down south. Which only added to my frustration.

But with every dark cloud there's always a silver lining.

And this was no different. I ended up shooting some of the local groms who tend to get lost in the shuffle. And those kids were so stoked that I was taking the time to shoot them. They looked at it as if I was doing them a favor. Truth be told, they were doing me the favor by reminding me what surfing is all about. These kids were stoked out of their minds. And I was there to capture their excitement. And later, my wife Cory joined me as we continued to shoot right through the tide.

Cory shot stills and I shot video. But hold on now, the biggest surprise and treat came not from any of the groms but rather from one of the local women. Natasha Rafferty paddled out and got some cool little waves. For some reason Natasha was not on my radar when it came to looking for and shooting local women surfers for my upcoming movie. I ended up getting a couple of decent rides of hers that earned her a place in my movie.

Now as far as the surfers who blew me off? Hell that's easy. I won't be shooting them the next swell. And that my friends is gonna hurt their tender little egos. What's the old saying? "Payback is a bitch!" (wink wink).

Check out the second name from the last one. "Vince" That was (is) my nickname for many years. If we ever get a Hurricane Vince or a Hurricane Ralph? I don't know what I'd do. Maybe retire for good? Or shoot the hell out of the swell and make another movie.

The movie below will now also feature Natasha Rafferty.
COMING LATE SUMMER!

This week's Ed's corner pic is from 2013. The surfer I thought, was Erica Nardone. Who I really need to get some footage of. She is one of the women I have respected for years. She charges in big surf and can mix it up with the boys on any given day. However, I was told by Erica herself, that this is not her. So, if anyone knows who this might be, drop me a line. Thanks.

Now for Some International News
I don't know what the hell is going on anymore. Do any of you? I mean, how did we go from being on the brink of a nuclear war, to being on the brink of a civil war? And all within one week. I'm sorry, but this is crazy. I don't mean to offend anyone out there, especially those of you who voted for 45. But this is just gone off the rails. He has not brought us together, if anything, he's driven us further apart. And he's too stubborn to admit it.

There is a tension out there that has not been felt since the 60's.
It is that bad.

This is simply insane. Why on earth is this happening? It's crazy!

Really? The KKK and Neo Nazis? It's 2017 people! WAKE THE F*** UP!I! Do I really think there's going to be a civil war? Honestly? For some of those people the civil war never ended.

I know this first hand. I've experienced it in the Marine Corps in 1969.
One of those southern boys called me a Yankee one day. I laughed and said "Yankee? You mean like from the Civil War?" And he was "Dam right Yankee!" And I remember saying to him, "Man that was a 100 years ago. I had nothing to do with that. And neither did you." But he held his ground. I was a Yankee and he hated all Yankees.

Suffice it to say, we never became friends.

KSM Photoshop of the Week
This whole last week of riots and violence was over a statue of Robert E. Lee. Well this got Ole KSM thinking, you see he has a statue of himself out in the courtyard at GITMO. He was really concerned about his statue being torn down. Can't really blame him. He's getting a petition signed by his Al Qeada and ISIS bros to keep the Statue
of KSM sitting on top of his trusted steed Pokey. No word on how many signatures he has yet.

So my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed).

*Note to self -must pick up a case of Build Your Own Statues
at Home Depot this week.

Yesterday- Another photo from 1974. You true NH locals should know exactly where this is.
(Below) In the early 70's we all bought boards that were all wrong for us. We all thought we were Jerry Lopez and that we were riding Pipeline. Turns out we were not. And that van was our van for discovering new breaks, and empty swimming pools. And man if that van could talk, the stories would curl your toes. Photo by RALPH.

Surfing With Smiles 8-10-17 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

The last and the "BEST" Surfing With Smiles of the Summer of 2017. Perfect weather, sun, surf, and warm water. Smiles for everyone. Thank you to the many Volunteers. * A special thanks to the Grondin family who suffered the loss of a loved one just days before this event. Unless you knew firsthand, they were all about keeping those kids smiling. All you guys Rock! Seeing the smiles on these kid's faces makes every single minute of preparation worth it. Hopefully, we'll see you all next summer. Keep smiling all year round.

SURFING WITH SMILES II July 25th, 2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.|

The second SURFING WITH SMILES of the 2017 Summer Season. It is exactly what the title says. Try not smiling, while watching these beautiful kids with autism, surfing at North Beach, in Hampton, NH. "Surfing with Smiles" is now in it's 8th year. Special thanks to Lindsay Mercer, Dave Cropper, Kevin Grondin and the many many wonderful volunteers. There are literally too many to name. The kids and their parents love you all. Music is by Ty Tabor the song is YOUR EYES off the Safety CD.

SURFING WITH SMILES June 2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo

The first of three "Surfing With Smiles" this Summer of 2017. Thanks to Cinnamon Rainbows, and all the Volunteers. You guys Rock! Hard not to smile, watching these kids with Autism riding waves. Another example of what surfing can do for your soul. *Special Thanks to my little assistant "Bennett" who actually shot one of the rides. He was pretty stoked about my cameras. and wanted so badly to try one. So I set him up for one shot. He was more steady than I was. I told him and his mother, "I'm gonna have to give him credit on the edit." Prepare to be stoked my friends. Prepare to be stoked.

GRANITE GIRLS and The RIVER WOMEN
from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo. This is the trailer for the new Surf Free Or Die and Ralph's Pic movie about the women surfers of the Northeast.
We're looking at a late summer release. It's been fun working with these talented women. The movie itself will be around 30 minutes long.
Hope you like it.

JUNEASTER June 7-8-2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

The welcomed Nor'easter we got on June 6th, 2017 that gave us 3 solid days of waves. All the points, reefs, and beaches were firing. I shot from NH to ME. And while the overall conditions were not exactly ideal, the vibe in and out of the water was filled with laughter. Why do surfers have to be so cruel to one another, especially when watching your buds get smoked out in the water? I don't know, but it's always been that way. We hoot when someone gets a good wave, and we howl when someone eats shit. Ha...I'm smiling now just writing this.

This web edit is a first for me. The shooting was shared with Kyle Linseman's cool Drone footage. I can foresee a partnership working with Kyle. He's stoked about shooting the action. And make no mistake about it, Kyle can rip. So for him to sacrifice his own surf time to shoot, speaks volumes of his new found passion. The music is by Meshell Ndegeocello and John Digwood. I'm stoked about this one. Hope you will be too.
