March 25th, 2025. A nice smallish fun swell at The Wall. The soundtrack is by Jack Shea.
You can hear more of his tunes on his Instagram account @iamjackshea.
Watch in 1080

March 21st, 2025 the first day of Spring. But honestly? It felt way more like Winter than it did Spring. What's the old saying?
"March comes in like a lion but goes out like a lamb." Well, that maybe true in the upcoming last days of March, but on this first day
of Spring it sure didn't have the meek call of a lamb. Nope. If anything, it had the growl and howl of a lion. A roaring lion.

Anyway, I shot this whole video at The Wall. Literally sitting under the Wall. I can't remember the last time I did that.

The surfers that I know are: Ian Dreher, Mikel Evans, Dave Cropper, Max Fatello, and Richie Sambataro

The music is by my favorite new artist Stephen Wilson Jr. He is amazing.
Please visit his website and purchase some of his great original songs.
And be sure to check out his killer version of STAND BY ME.
It is by far the best version of that song I have ever heard. It will blow you away.

NEXT BLOG May 11th, 2025.
All future Blogs will be posted on the 1st and 3rd week of every month (give or take a day or two). *Also in the event of any significant swell I will post the week of that swell. Although the blog is now bi-weekly, I'm certainly not gonna pass up a decent swell. So while it's basically going to be every other week, I left it open for some wiggle room.

THE BLOG IS CELEBRATING TWENTY ONE YEARS! MORE CONSISTENT SPRING SWELLS. TOWER OF TRUMP TARIFFS!

Well, we made it. 20 years of every single week amd one year of every other week. I'm curious as to how many of you were OK with the change. As you know, I was on the fence as to how I was going to go forward. I had three options. Keep going every week. Go bi-weekly. Or go monthly. Well, I opted for the bi-weekly option. And now that I've reached the first year of going Bi-weekly I can look back on it all and comment.

It was a lot less stressful that's for sure. That weekly deadline used to push me to the edge a lot of those years. I realize that it was a self imposed deadline but I still had to adhere to it. At first it was hard to stop myself from wanting to post every Sunday/Monday. But once I got into a groove it wasn't so bad. And now that I've completed the first year of every other week. I'm at the crossroads again. Should I continue doing the bi-weekly for another year? Or go monthly?

I wish I had an online suggestion box that you could check off.

I'd love to know what some of you longtime readers think. I know if it was me I'd want no changes. But then again, I'm selfish. I felt the same way when SURFING stopped publishing. I felt the same when SURFER stopped publishing. And I really felt the same when ESM (Eastern Surf Magazine) stopped publishing.

But then again, I'm old school. I don't want things to change. But I roll with the punches when they do. That's why I kept the Blog going for as long as I did before going Bi-weekly. I didn't want to upset those of you who enjoyed reading the Blog each week and checking out the local pics. I compromised by going Bi-weekly.

So until further notice; I plan on staying the course of bi-weekly. Besides, I am forever posting on social media, and I know that a lot of you are aware of that. I enjoy posting pics and clips from the actual day it's happening. Especially if it's really good and all the elements come together.

So between the social media posts and the every other week Blog.
I should be good. And if I'm good, you're good too. Are we good?

CHECK THIS OUT.
The image below is part of the original Blog posted on April 15th, 2004.
I was calling it a newsletter at first when someone told me that it was actually a Blog. I had no idea what a Blog was. Well, I do today.

BILL MORRISEY'S YOGA IN ACTION.

I got an email from Bill a few of weeks ago about a non-profit organization called Yoga in Action. While I have never personally got into YOGA, I do know many who have and swear by it. So this was a no brainer. I told Bill I'd be happy to share this story with my readers.

Ed O'Connell was one of the most loved surf photographers in New England. A US ARMY Vietnam Veteran who saved the lives of so many ARMY Grunts in Nam in 68-69 as a Medic on board those Dust Off Hueys. He was a close and dear friend of mine.

When he passed on July 1st, 2014 I swore I'd keep his memory and legacy alive by giving him this weekly corner. He loved surfing and he loved taking photos of all the surfers.

Not just those who could really stand out. He shot every one. As long as I shall live and breathe the salt air, there will be a corner dedicated to Ed.

ED'S CORNER April 15th, 2025

This is a photo of Jenness Beach in Rye, NH from 1970. Not sure who that surfer is walking out of the water. But I wonder if he is still around, and more importantly, I wonder if he's still surfing. I guess we will never know the answer to those questions unless someone knows who that is. I mean it's possible that the individual was a friend of Ed's. Like Surfer Crow. I've seen Super 8mm movie footage of Crow riding a board similar to that shape that Ed acutaly shot. So it's possible that's Steve Watson. AKA Surfer Crow. Photo by Ed O'Connell

COMING SOME TIME IN Late SPRING OF 2025

UPDATE: Fingers crossed. The book will be done by Spring.
Which means a late Spring release. May of 2025.
And this book will be available in both hard cover and soft cover on AMAZON, BARNES & NOBLE, INGRAM, GOOGLE BOOKS, and KOBO PUBLISHING.

SPEAKING OF BOOKS. SAM GEORGE HAS A NEW BOOK COMING OUT NEXT MONTH.

Most of you reading this Blog already know who Sam George is. But for those of you who do not. Sam is an Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker and former editor of SURFER Magazine and SURFING Magazine. He's also a dear friend that I have known since 1979. He along with Jeff Chamberlain are two of the most prolific writers of our lifestyle.

So check back here for any updates.

WELCOME BACK SALTY PAWS.

Dogs and beaches. The perfect match.

Once again, the Hurricane Season of names is back. And once again, I have been omitted from the list while others are back for a third time. My daughter's name "Gabrielle" is back for a third time. Who the hell is in charge of naming Hurricanes. Can we get DOGE to look into this?

But if your one of the lucky one's to be a named Hurricane and your a surfer? That's pretty damn cool. I'm hoping we get down to WENDY.
That could be a good one. HURRICANE WENDY. Fingers crossed.

ANNOUNCING THE ANDY SHOW.

This is going to be one hell of a day. Andy Paley was a super talented individual who created so many wonderful songs for the movies, albums, TV cartoon shows (SPONGE BOB) and so much more. He was a personal friend of Cory and I, and I have known him since 1978. He passed away last November from cancer and left behind a widow and two twin sons. This concert is to help out his sons. I wish I could go. But it's just too tight for me scheduling wise right now. But I'm sure it's going to be a great time for all. But look at that line-up. Andy earned this celebration.

MEET THE OLD BEATLES
I'm usually against AI generated crap. But this? This one got to me.
I so wish they were all still with us. The BEATLES. Paul, Ringo, George and John. Sigh.

So 47 wanted to bring these China jobs to the US? Yeah right.
No way on earth would that have happened. Americans don't want to make cellphones in giant factories. Those are Chinese jobs for Chinese workers. The whole TARIFF war with China backfired. 47 once again BLINKED. He is NO longer going to charge China with 145% TARIFF on Cellphones. Once his posse told him that NOBODY in America wants to build cellphones 47 backed down from his TARIFF threat. So when Ole Khaliddy heard that 47 was gonna be pretending to build cellphones for a "photo op" our boy Sheiky knew a good scoop when he hears one. So KSM showed up at the new USA CHINA FACTORY in the Bible belt and proceeded to put together a few iPhones. The results were terrible. So TRUMP backed off on the cellphone and electronics TARIFF. But that didn't stop the Sheik from photo bombing 47 and his FAKE cellphone factory photo op. Damn Khaliddy you sure got some gonads!

And so my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed). *Note to self -must pick up a case of iPhones at Home Depot this week.

Everybody loves seeing the old pics of surfing. Especially here in Northern New England. If you have any old pics please send them off to me via email or social media. My email is ralph@adlantic.com

Brian Tissot Central California 1972.
I am lucky enough to be on the receiving end of many of my buddy Jeff's emails. He has a treasure trove of old photos from Central California of he and his surf crew. Many of which have gone on to make a name for themselves in the surf world. This particular surfer is Brian Tissot and he's riding a Petrillo surfboard. I remember those boards. And this is a pretty cool pic. I'm sure if Brian is still around he'd want a copy of this pic.

I kept a daily Blog on my CATCH A WAVE FOR MOLLY surf campaign, when I surfed every single day for 365 consecutive days. Click on the Banner above to read entries of my daily journey. There's some really interesting and true experiences
that happened during that year. Some of which are to this day, unexplainable. Some are just mind blowing. But all true.

I started on July 26th, 2010 and ended on July 26th, 2011.

Some rainy Sunday, pour yourself a cup or two and go through this year long journal. Pay close attention to the month of May in 2011. Read that month and let me know what you think of that.

Be forewarned, it will change you forever.

Friday March 7th, 2025, was perhaps one of the windiest and coldest days of the winter so far. It was all I could do to keep my balance on
those slippery kelp faced rocks while shooting in that wind. It was in a word; BRUTAL. While the waves themselves were not that
consistent, there were a few moments. I apologize for some of the shaky camera work, but honestly?
It was one of the most difficult tasks of my 60 plus years of shooting the surf.

Anyway, Johnny "JIM" Meehan got a few good ones, and you can't go wrong with James Marshall Hendrix.
HAPPY SAINT PATRICKS DAY TO ALL MY IRISH FRIENDS.

The last day of February. So it wasn't very big or very hollow. The night before was slightly bigger, but the conditions were not ideal for shooting.
This last day at least had sun and offshore winds. It also had a tad too many riders. There were 15 people in the line-up at first light.
That's too congested for that size. It was mostly waist to chest high. There were the occasional bigger waves but you had to be patient and wait for them.

Music is by Stephen J. Wilson Jr and I think he's one of the most prolific singer/songwriter/guitarists on the planet today.

The day before Valentines Day. Thursday February 13th, 2025. Our first real overhead swell of 2025. It's been awhile since we saw waves of this size.
The whole film was shot here in New Hampshire. The songs WHY CAN'T YOU SAY LOVE b/w HIJACKER are by my old band The VINNY BAND.
I chose the music from our first single on EAT Records because I needed songs that had the word "Love" in the chorus. I wrote both of these songs
and sing lead on both. My brother Johnny plays lead guitar on both songs.
David Robinson of the The CARS produced both songs.
This recording was the first of many that David and I worked together on. David ended up producing our LP on EAT Records. Olas De Sexo

My friend Joe Carter made this video in 2010 during my CATCH A WAVE FOR MOLLY campaign. My late friend and fellow Marine Vietnam veteran George Masten
had stopped by to see me when Joe was here filming. George is also a Korean war vet. Joe's dad Manford Carter is a Marine Korean War veteran as well.
Joe told me after meeting George he reminded him of his father. I Love seeing George here. He was the best, and I miss him every single day.
He passed in 2016. Also in this video is my young puppy Patch. I mention that he has not made a single peep yet. Well, that all changed shortly after
this video was made. This is a true story about me skateboarding on the flight deck of an LPH off the coast of Vietnam during a Typhoon in 1970.
I got in a lot of trouble doing that. But, I'm a surfer, and that's all I'm going to say about that. Thank you Joe.

CAN YOU SAY RALPH?
My young three year old Patch trying to say my name.
Our little granddaughter Avery was there during this episode.
Rest In Peace Patchy. I'm really going to miss you.

Day One of 2025. I fell into three individual surfers on this day that I did not see coming. The first surfer was Mikel Evans. I had not seen Mikey
since the service for his mother Karen that we held on October 26th, 2024. Mikey wanted to surf The Wall and I told him, if he was going to
surf there, I would stay and shoot some stills and video. Now to be honest, Mikey was not the only one out there. He was joined by Mike Stanek
and a host of others. But I wanted to get some of his waves. I have been shooting Mikey since he was a pre-grom. So I hung around and
shot his waves. After the Wall I went north and saw my own son Max surf for the first time since his surgery a year ago. That was unexpected.
He has been slipping out here and there without telling me the last month or so because he's still nowhere near a 100%.
He's been riding a longer board for obvious reasons. But it was great seeing him out there as both a father and a surf photographer.

The third person I happened to luck into this first day of 2025 was Tim Brown. Tim is a quadriplegic athlete who has been getting in
and out of the water on a specially designed surfboard for the last 5 years that I know of. I have shot pics of him before and his dad sent
me a wonderful shell horn as a token of his appreciation. Watching Tim surf on New Years Day was a visual treat for me. Tim is actually
able to turn his board using his elbows and leaning into his turns. I have been working with wounded war veterans in the surf
since 2008 so I am no stranger to what the human being can do when they put their mind to it. Tim was riding waves on his own
and making subtle little carves on the perfect waves at The Rocks. In short he was stoked as any surfer I have ever known.

He had a good crew working with him and they were always within reach if he wiped out. I shot four of his waves
and he only ate it on one. But judging by the smile on his face, he was too stoked to give a shit about wiping out.
Hell, we all eat shit. Finally, I dedicated this first video of the year to the memory Karen Evans who passed away last October.
She is missed by all who knew and loved her. She was the best. Happy New Year my friends. Let's make it a good one.

Saturday December 21st, 2024. The Winter Solstice. The surf was a solid head high, the wind was offshore,
and it was really cold. The best news of the day was local surf mom Kim Grondin came home after a
lengthy stay in the hospital. Our prayers were answered as she came home for Christmas.
I guess we could also call this a "Christmas Miracle." Welcome home Kim!

The music is me doing my version of The Little Drummer Boy ala Jimi Hendrix.
On December 23rd is the 41 st anniversary of me meeting my future wife Cory.
I played this song at a night club in Boston on December 23rd, 1983.
The rest as they say is History.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy New Year, and most importantly PRAY FOR PEACE.

Hurricane Kirk was the first legit Hurricane to hit New England. We got 4 solid days of surf. With October 8th, 2024,
being the best of the four. NOAA had predicted an active hurricane season for the entire East Coast, but it has
been anything but. Still, the Gulf has seen its share of death and destruction. And while no surfer that I know, wants
to see that happen, we do want these massive storms to simply go out to sea and produce good waves for all of us.
The hurricane season ends in November, so we still have time. A few more like KIRK would be a nice way to end the season.
Just don't kill anyone or destroy their homes and businesses.

SURFING WITH SMILES 6-20-24 from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

The first SWS of the summer of 2024. And it was a memorable one. We had to deal with the first
ever threat of thunder and lightning. But thanks to the Hampton Lifeguards and the volunteers, the
first sign of thunder and lightning we had the beach cleared in record time.
In fact, we never even got a single drop of rain. But we will always err on the side of caution.
Always. Our main priority is the safety of the kids, volunteers, and family members.
Hey we got almost an hour's worth of fun before we pulled the plug.
Besides, we have two scheduled. One in July and one in August.
See you all in July!

April 8th, 2024. The Total Eclipse Day. I shot two of my longtime friends, Johnny JIM Meehan
or as I have called him the last three years, Johnny Chisel. I love shooting Johnny. But on this
day he was surfing with his longtime friend Peter Stokes. Johnny is 64 and Peter is 74. I did sort
of a running dialogue on the two of them. It was all in good fun. Be sure to watch after the credits.

The JANUARY SWELLS of 2024 from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

This video has four distinct swells beginning with January 8th, 2024. That was the day after the snow storm.
Then we had those massive Sou'easters. The first one hit on January 10th, 2024. That one gave us two days of waves.
January 10th & 11th, 2024. Although there were ridable waves on January 14th ( the day after the second Sou'easter)
I did not shoot that day. It just didn't clean up enough for me to warrant shooting. But these three days
had some really fun surf. Then at the end of the month we got another really good swell on January 29th
and there were good waves on the 31st. And the local boys made the best of it. MVF got in his last surf
before his ACL surgery on February 1st, 2024. GODSPEED Mackey. You'll be back before you know it.
The music is by JMH, SRV, and RT.

BACK TO BACK from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

THE CHRISTMAS MIRACLE SWELL December 19th & 20th, 2023
from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

Seriously? I did not see this coming, or rather, I did not see it the way others like SURFLINE saw it.
I mean the day before December 18th, 2023 in New Jersey was the BIGGEST surf ever recorded in Jersey.
Hell even Florida had some big surf. I mean it was going off down south. but even with that, I was not expecting the size we got.
That was a complete surprise. There's a few waves in this edit that might rival the biggest surf I've ever documented up here in NH.

There's one wave that Lars Hamilton gets that will rival any other wave ever shot up here.

But I'm not going to be the judge of that. You can form your own opinions. But the naked eye does not lie.
There's no Photoshop or AI bullshit in this edit. It's all real. Put it this way, it's as big as the Hurricane LEE footage
I shot in September, and it might be a little bigger. But again you tell me. This edit is dedicated to the TRUE Christmas Miracle of 2023.
Abby Jowett came home for Christmas. And that my friends is the best news of all. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Music is by myself, Barrence Whitfield, Gary Hoey, and Mike Zito.

A DECEMBER SUNSET 12-11-23 from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

The Another one session edit. I shot this on the afternoon of December 11th, 2023. I shot stills earlier in the day,
but it was overcast and the winds were howling pretty hard offshore, so I passed on shooting video.
But later in the day the sun popped out, and although the swell dropped, I had recently purchased a new video camera,
and was waiting for the right time, a decent swell, and the perfect light to shoot. Well, that all came together
on Monday afternoon, December 11th, 2023. Crowley, Ian, and Beckley were out, so I figured what the hell,
I may as well get some practice with the new camera. I mean I had the talent, the swell, and the lighting.
Anyway, it's short, only 6 minutes long. I think you can handle it. Oh yeah, watch in 1080. Hope you all have a
nice Holiday season. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanza, and Happy New Year.
But the one greeting the whole world needs today is this: PEACE ON EARTH.
Please, let there be Peace On Earth.

THANKSGIVING 2023 from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

The week of Thanksgiving was one for the ages. Sunday November 19th, 2023 was one of the best days of the year.
All the points were firing as were the beach breaks. And then on Thanksgiving morning, the day broke with a fresh
new swell. While it was nowhere as good as the 19th, it was certainly nothing to sneeze at. Again, all the points
and all the beaches were working. Like I said it was a Great week.
The music is by my nephew Jesse Joseph (qwillmusic.com) and as always it fits perfectly.
And once again this video features all local surfers surfing local waves.
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I know that I am personally thankful for EVERYTHING.
I mean it. I am thankful for everyone in my life. From my family to my friends. From the ocean
to the woods. I love and I am so grateful and thankful to have them all in my life.
This movie is only 13 minutes long. I hope you enjoy it.

AVA IDALIA from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

About this particular video. I shot this footage at sunrise yesterday morning (September 5th, 2023). It was breathtakingly beautiful out there.
I had to leave early to attend a funeral for some dear friends of ours. At the funeral service, I heard this incredible tenor (Brian Landry)
sing this song "AVA MARIA," and thought, this would make a good soundtrack to this footage. I spoke with him after the funeral
and he told me he just recorded this song last week. And then he told me his dad was a Marine in Vietnam. Whoa. It was like it was meant to be.
The waves were from Hurricane Idalia and this song just seemed to fit. Maybe I'm wrong, but it just seemed to fit the mood of the day.

So I dedicate this video to Tom Grondin. Rest In Peace Tom. And say hello to Frank from all of us.

SURFING HEALS ALL WOUNDS

GIRLS ON CURLS from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

Four High School students from Derryfield HS in Manchester, NH chose surfing as their senior project. They asked me to be their mentor,
and I accepted that challenge. The girls are Alyssa Shula, Elena Moore, Christine Nadeau, and Ava Young. In just 7 short one hour sessions
in cold New England waters, I along with the help of Erica Nardone, Kevin Grondin, and with the huge support from Dave Cropper and
Cinnamon Rainbows we turned these four inlanders into surfers. By the time we were done with them, they could all paddle out, sit on their boards,
spin around and catch the "right" wave and angle and parallel along the the face of the waves.
And the most important thing? They all had fun. And it seems like they all want to continue to surf going forward.
Just please don't drop in on me if I'm out surfing.

I want to thank CINNAMON RAINBOWS and Kevin Grondin and Erica Nardone for their help.

SURFING HEALS ALL WOUNDS

Ode to Joe
Joe Somogyi was a local Hampton Surfer who died from exposure to Agent Orange in 1978 while serving
in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. I wrote this song about him and put some of the old super 8mm footage
that I shot of him back in the early to late 70's. The music is performed by The NOR'EASTERS.
Remember the Fallen this Memorial Day.

MAY DAY 5-1-23 from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

MAY DAY MAY DAY. Monday May 1st, 2023 Well we got hit with a double barrel low that produced enough rain to
make it an official "April Showers Bring May Flowers" criteria. I don't even know what that means. I do know that the
last day of April was a bona fide soaker. And May 1st broke with some of the loudest waves I've ever
heard in the 60 years I've been surfing. I mean it was roaring loud. Maybe because of the South Winds? I'm not sure.
I just know that it was loud and it was big. And those who had no work or school were on hand to sample
this Spring Sou'easter. Music is by the Adobe library. I took all the stills too.
Check it out. It's only 7 minutes long. Watch in 1080

2. Go monthly (most likely) . 3. Quit and walk away from it all. (possible).
