January 13th, 2008

If you live in New Hampshire and are of voting age, then you are clearly relieved that the circus has left town. I mean, we were all, bombarded with phone calls, and pollsters, and just about everywhere we turned, it was in our face. By "it and circus" I mean of course, the 2008 Presidential race for the White House. While I clearly had a candidate of choice, I was continually bothered by every candidate on a regular basis. Even by my own guy.

I finally countered the constant calls with my own simple question. Whenever someone called to ask me where I stood on particular candidates, I would throw it back in the pollster's face with this line:

Me: "Where does your candidate stand on a surfboard?"

Pollster: "Excuse me?"

Me: "I said, where does your candidate stand on a surfboard?"

Pollster: "I don't understand your question sir."

Me: "I mean, is your candidate a regular foot, or a goofy foot?"

Pollster: "Why, I'm not sure."

Me:"Well, I need to know if I'm going to answer any of your questions. I mean, I can't be voting for someone who's not sure on how they stand on a surfboard, now can I?"

Pollster:"Sir I don't know what to say."

Me: "Well find out, and then call me back."
Most of them never called back.
By the way, my guy is a switchfoot.

And, if you live in New England, or have ties to New England, you are one happy camper today. Why? I know you know, that your New England Patriots are 17-0 having defeated the "BIG" Jacksonville Jaguars 31-20 in the Divisional AFC Championship game. In an amazing display of Pigskin wizardry that had it all. Drama, anguish and total euphoria!

They now face the San Diego Chargers as they host the battered Chargers team in Foxboro next Sunday in the much anticipated AFC Championship Game. My friends, we are all living in historical times. I mean, we truly are. And to think it all started back in January of 2002 during that wacky snowbowl game against the dreaded Raiders...who would of thought we'd be here today? I mean really. Who?

Now before I go on...I need to let you all know ahead of time, that next week's column might be late due to the fact that the AFC game might take it's toll on Ralph's Pic Of The Week. The real reason is, I write this column on Sundays, and the game might get in the way.

But if things go the way we all want them to go, I will write the column late Sunday night, and hopefully it will be another Victory packed surf column for all of you New England surf and sports fans.

Are we looking at 18-0? Well I don't really know...I do know, that we are on this day 17-0.

And that my friends, is all you need to know.

Oh one more thing. We have one BIG ASS STORM heading our way tonight. They are calling for BIG SURF and BIG SNOW. So take your pick. If you live around here, you will have the choice of going surfing, or heading for the mountains. We can't lose.

I have yet to hit the slopes, but I know a bunch of you have. And from what I'm hearing, the snow has been as good as it gets around here. Heck, we even had Spring conditions last week. It's been one wacked out winter weather scene. Snow storm after snow storm, followed by swell after swell, and then an amazing run of Spring like conditions.

So is this Global Warming? You know what? It might be. I'm no expert, but I have to admit, that there's some weird ass shit going on out there. We need to pay attention for the future of our children, and our children's children.

You know, it's the New Year and I forgot to share some of my New Year's Resolutions. Can I share a few with you? Thanks. I appreciate you letting take a moment of your time with this nonsense. OK, some of my Surf related New Year's Resolutions are:

1. I will NEVER Surf the following breaks no matter what. MAVERICKS, GHOST TREES, CHOPES, PIPELINE, WAIMEIA BAY and a few other Big Wave Spots.
2. I WILL NOT TOW IN ANYWHERE THAT REQUIRES a TOW-IN.
3. I WILL TRY TO TRAVEL MORE TO USER FRIENDLY SURF BREAKS . ESPECIALLY TROPICAL SURF LOCALES.
4. I WILL TRY (REALLY TRY) to SURF AS MUCH AS I CAN AT HOME.
5. I WILL TRY to be more helpful and polite to other surfers regardless of their ability and style.
6. I Will Try and take more footage and photos and encourage others to do so as well.
7. I will Try to be more friendly and polite to ALL people.
8. I Will try and support whoever becomes President, unless it's someone I don't like. Then I will pretend they are not really our president.
9. I will try to not care so much if the Patriots don't have another winning season like this year. But if they do, I will jump back on the band wagon and act like a dam fool again. 10. Finally, I will try Not to make fun of the singers who don't make it on AMERICAN IDOL, unless they are really awful and have no business being on TV.

So there you have it. Some of my personal New Years Resolutions. Hope I encouraged some of you to follow through with your own.

I

Yesterday 1972 Surfer CROW (Sans White Helmet)
(Below) Crow is the future. Huh? I mean it. All you young Groms who can't even think past your 18th birthday
need to know that there are surfers from New England who have been surfing around these parts for decades
and still surf today. Steve "Surfer Crow" is one of them. Most of you know him from his trademark white helmet.
Riding a plain white longboard but styling every time he hits the water. This video frame grab from Ed O'Connell
shows Crow on a short board and without his helmet. From the 8mm archives of another New England classic
Mr Ed O'Connell.
