September 19th, 2010's ALIVE!
The Surf Count of Waist High Or Better is 29 out of 31 weeks....

"A little death and destruction never hurt anyone..." Can you believe I used to utter those ridiculous words? But I did. Whenever a Hurricane would come up the coast,
I would say that. Usually to civilians who didn't surf. I thought I was being funny, or maybe it was some macho BS that me and my friends all had. I say "had", because I
no longer feel that way. It's not funny. People die in storms. Homes are ruined in
storms. Lives are changed forever, all because of these storms.
Death and destruction from a Hurricane? Yea, it's not funny. But we all love them.
It is indeed, a strange love affair.

I mean, how many times have we seen the mass evacuations from the coast on TV, the insane bumper to bumper traffic, crawling along, trying to escape the Hurricanes, while in the opposite lane, going in the other direction, a handful of surfers are speeding back towards the storms? We've seen it for years. Further solidifying the image of the surfer as being "crazy". That's part of the reason why I'd say those absurd statements. I'd play right into that whole stereo type image of surfers being wild and daring. There was a time when I was obsessed with surfing big storms. And not just hurricanes. Usually our big, nasty, and cold Nor'easters.
I'd be all over them.

Hell, I even named my band The Nor'easters. I loved those things as much, if not
more than the Hurricanes. Though I have to admit, there's something special about a hurricane. And it's all media driven for sure. They make them seem more dangerous than they typically are. But make no mistake. A Hurricane making landfall is
dangerous. Very dangerous. And very costly. Look at Katrina. And Hugo.
They kicked some serious ass.

And while we all understand the consequences of these powerful storms, the million dollar question is...

Would I change it all if I could? If I had the power to do so, would I...?

Would I stop these natural storms from developing off the coast of Africa, and come steaming across the Caribbean, and then light up the entire East Coast? Would I stop that if I could? Hell no! Are you kidding me? Look, I feel bad when people die, and homes and businesses are ruined, but these are natural storms, created by God and nature. I would not stop it. I might however, suggest to some of the Islanders who live
in those shanty towns, and those who live along the coast, to be better prepared when these giant storms spawn out to sea, but I would never stop these natural beasts from doing their thing. Ever.

That would be like going against nature itself. And I'm all about nature.

I remember a time back in the 70's, when some think tank group got together and tried to come up with some kind of harebrained chemical that would disperse these magnificent storms. Can you believe that? It's true! Me and my friends were freaking
out. "Why would they want to do that?" someone asked. "What if they succeed?" They sent planes into the belly of the beast dropping all kinds of weird stuff into the eye of
the storm. They spent millions trying to kill hurricanes and Tornadoes. Thank God
they failed, and failed miserably.

You can't mess with Mother Nature.

But here we are in the midst of our second wave of Storms. The first wave (pun intended) being Danielle and Earl. Now we have IGOR and Julia with Karl kicking some serious butt down in Mexico. But the IGOR looks perfect for us. Well, perfect for those
of who can surf during the week. The track this thing is taking is going to be good for a long lined up ground swell that will be here for days on end. Much like Danielle.
Or Gabrielle did back in 1989. The storms that sit out there and spawn waves.

And trust me, if I had to choose between Earl and Danielle? I'd pick Danielle.

Oh no question Earl had more punch and fury, but Danielle had endurance. She hung around for days on end. They (the media) were going crazy talking about Earl and the possibilities of land fall and death and destruction (oh oh did I just say that again?) when the whole time, the Northern New England coast was graced with days of head high and better glassy surf. We were like Earl who? We are digging what Danielle was serving up. And don't forget, that both Earl and Danielle were prefaced by that no name Nor'easter, which was a great primer for all these tropical storms.

In fact, I posted some leftovers of both Danielle and the Nor'easter this week.

That now forgotten Nor'easter was so much fun. I've got some killer footage of that
storm that I've yet to post. Talking video here. I have a few clips of our own version
of the "Eveready Bunny", Kevin "Doc" Grondin getting some nice Hatteras type barrels. Classic stuff. In fact, I'm sitting on some sweet water footage that I shot during the peak of Danielle on Tuesday August 31st, that I want to post...there's just not enough time.

So hopefully by the time you guys are reading this, our little world here in Northern
New England will be lit up, with all the points, reefs, and beach breaks firing on all cylinders. But please, if you are a beginner and the surf is big. PLEASE don't paddle
out. Please. Especially if the spot you are paddling out to, is being dominated by a group of good and competent surfers. In other words, if you look out at some break
and it is being surfed by a group of good surfers don't paddle out. If you are not sure
of yourself. Guess what? You don't belong out there.

We all want to have fun while surfing.

But if you don't belong out at some break because of your inability, or you have no confidence, then go with that gut feeling and DON'T paddle out. Or, find a spot where there are more beginners and surf with them. The last thing you want to do is mess someone's else's wave up. Like what happened to me during EARL. You don't want
that. I know I don't want it. I want to be the Happy Ralph, not the unhappy Ralph. Nobody likes the unhappy Ralph. Not my wife. My kids, My friends. My fellow surfers. Nobody. Especially me. I like being happy in the water.

Please...use common sense out there. If you are unsure. Ask. Or, watch and learn.
But watch from the shore. Do NOT paddle out if you are a beginner. You could get
hurt or worse...much worse.

I don't ever want to have say these words again..."A little death and destruction never hurt anyone..."

Now for some of my Weekly Global Observances:
So did anyone see that horrible story about the family in Connecticut last week?
Where two lowlife scumbags broke into this family's home and terrorized the entire family? The father, mother, and two daughters. Unspeakable acts of violence followed by the tragic deaths of the mother and two daughters. These two are going to hell. They are going to hell and they will burn for an eternity for what they did to this poor family. It's so bad that every time it came on TV I would watch as much as I could stand and then turn the station.

Look, I know the world is made up of all types. And I am convinced ,that there are more good people doing good things, than there are bad people doing bad things. I do believe that. However, that does not mean that evil does not exist. It does. And it will always be there. We just have recognize it, before it commits itself on the innocent. These two evil sons of bitches, must pay for their horrible sins.

I know this is not Christian like, but I think, they should be put to death.

They need to expedite their meeting with the devil. They need to be put to death. The devil is waiting on these two. There is a couple of hot seats in hell with their names
on them. Eternity Hell Tickets. Those two have them. Light 'em up Satan.

Speaking of fire and Christians, Florida Pastor Jones apparently came to his senses last September 11th, by not burning a copy of the Quran. Can we get an amen for this loose cannon? He would almost be funny if he was not so dangerous. The same with the whole Mosque situation in New York City. I know you all know about that. Why can't
they reach a compromise? I mean what purpose would either accomplish except to further fan the flames of hate and evil? Build a Mosque down the street away from Ground Zero. Let the families who lost loved ones on 9-11 live in peace.

And Father Jones? Burn a Quran in your Outhouse, behind your home. Just you and your stinky mutton chopped absurd idea. You bonehead.

My wife and I attended the Patriots season Opener last weekend. We even got to meet Hall of Fame Great John "Hog" Hannah. It was great. And so were the Patriots. They beat up on the Bengals that first half like the Patriots of 2007 (now why the hell did I bring that up?)...the suspect Defense looked pretty damn good if you ask me. Today is
a big game though. The dreaded J-E-T-S JETS. Though they (NYJ) did not look so good against the Ravens on Monday. But this is the NFL, and anything can happen out there. Anything. Hell, I could even forget about the 2007 season, for a little bit. Just a little.

Because as I have said before, there is nothing that can dislodge that 2007 Chicken bone that is lodged in my throat. There is NO Heimlich maneuver on the planet that can get it out. I'm going to my grave with that thing. 19 and OH NOOOOO.
