September 28th, 2014 The RUN is 29 out of 30 Weeks
Waist high or better, at least once a week. There was
INSANE surf this week due to that No Hype Ocean Storm On the LAST Day of Summer... September 22nd, & 23rd, 2014

Hello Autumn and How About That NO NAME Storm on the Last day of Summer? Wow.

I mentioned last week that I would never tire when it comes to the excitement generated by Tropical Storms and Hurricanes. On the other hand, I will also never tire of getting in on the action of a swell that had most of the surf population caught with their pants down. Talking of course about the last day of summer swell on Monday September 22nd, 2014.

The Autumnal Equinox happened at exactly 10:41PM that night.

But during the daylight hours under beautiful sunny skies and a stiff offshore breeze, the New England coast was hit with a perfect well groomed swell, that had every point, reef, and beach break firing on all cylinders. And it all happened on the very last day of Summer.

It was a surprise to say the least. Talk about ending on a good note.

Some would even argue that this swell was better than the Hurricane we had the week prior. And I suppose I would be one of them. After
all Edouard was not exactly the Hurricane to end all Hurricanes. But this no name no hype swell on Monday?

It was pretty damn good.

I can't remember the last time I watched a swell build under sunny skies and offshore winds. Had to have been in Hawaii. And that
would be years ago. many many years ago.

But that's what this swell did. It got bigger and bigger with each pulse.

I can't tell you how many people said to me "where did this come from?" I would look at them and point out to sea. After all, where else would waves come from?

All kidding aside I just so happened to see the weather the night before and the weatherman on one of the local Boston stations pointed out this huge ocean storm. It stopped me in my tracks. I knew right then and there we would have waves the next morning. But I was only partly right.

Because it was small from 8:00AM to 10:00AM.

But and hour after...oh boy, all bets were off. It was here. I mean it was the real deal. It was not only overhead but it was hollow and perfectly lined up. I sent out a series of text messages to some close friends and called others who do not text. They were all surprised. Ha!

As you can see, it was pretty damn good. But as good as it was it was made even better due to the fact that the crowds were not on it. So those who stumbled upon it got some really nice waves and enjoyed the minimal crowds. For it being the last day of summer? It could not have ended any better.

I even swam out at dusk to shoot from the water.

I took my GoPro and got some interesting color and action clips. I also used fins for the first time in about 10 years. For some stubborn reason, known only to me, I refused to use fins when shooting from the water. Well, I admit. I was stupid and stubborn.

Speaking of stupid. This is Johnny Meehan getting a little too close for comfort. Now why does he have to be so hurtful? Actually I was laughing my head off when he sprayed me. It was pretty funny. But back to the fins. They really helped me out there.

I will never shoot from the water again without the use of fins.

It just made it so much more manageable. See, I can change. I'm not the old dog you can't teach new tricks too. I am capable of learning. Just a little stubborn.

Speaking of surf ...you all know that the very next day was the first day of fall and you just knew there was still a bump out there. Actually it was more than just a bump. It was fun. Still warm. Still off shore, and believe it or not, still uncrowded.

The photo above was taken at the Wall on 9/23/14.

October is coming...she'll be here Wednesday . And I will be in heaven. Love New England in the Fall. I love it.

"Ed's Corner" pic this week is one from January 12th, 2014.
This is Pev and it came from a folder that I had marked as Ed's leftovers in January of this year. It had to have been in one of the warmer months in 2013 due to the fact that Pev is not wearing boots or a winter suit. maybe Pev remembers when this was shot. I will be having a whole winter gallery of Ed's in my COLD COAST movie coming this Fall.
Each week I will feature one of Ed's great pics from this blog.

Now for Some Of My Weekly Global Observances

The SAME big story this week again is the same as last week. The bombing and decimating of ISIS. We have a decent coalition that is helping us and it appears to be growing with each day. If the whole FREE world joined forces against this evil we might stand a chance of beating them.

See these guys? They should all die a slow and painful death.

Meanwhile, let's all take a minute, and enjoy the weekly
humiliation of the mastermind terrorist who killed 3,000 innocent civilians on September 11th, 2001. Here we see our boy KSM with creepy looking Al Sharpton. I know I know...I just have a hard time with Al. If it makes you feel any better, I'm sure if Al knew me he'd more than likely not like me. But I'm ok with that.

Khalid Sheik Mohammed (KSM), the mastermind behind 9-11
the captured Al Qeada ICON is getting his weekly slap in the
face. You're welcome KSM fans.

* Note to self: Must pick up a case of Nut Huggers at Home
Depot this week.

The Patriots play The Chiefs on Monday Night Football. I hope they win. But won't be surprised if they don't. I still love the team .
I love the Red, White, and Blue of the New England Patriots.

My CATCH A WAVE FOR MOLLY. (Click On the Banner below
on this page.) Started on July 26, 2010 ENDED July 26, 2011.
A Wave a day for 365 consecutive days.
Yesterday- Ed O'Connell 1967.
(Below) I have said many times over the last 10 years or so, that Ed was a surfer. He did surf. And I know I have said this many times: "The only good surf photographers are those who surf." If you don't surf or never surfed and you take photos of surfing? There is much to be desired in your photos. You need to be able to anticipate the surfer's next move. You need to know the mechanics of a wave. You need to know the styles of the many surfers in your area. In short, you NEED to know surfing. Otherwise you are wasting everyone's time. Suffice it to say. The late Ed O'Connell, knew surfing. Mostly because, he loved it and he did it. Case closed.

was good. This swell caught everyone off guard.

Koa Smith in Longest Skeleton Bay Barrel POV From Inside .

Published on Aug 15, 2014

This is the longest tube ride that I have ever seen filmed POV from the inside of the barrel. Freaking amazing wave surfed by Koa Smith at Skeleton Bay in Namibia, Africa. Possibly the longest deep sand barrel ever documented in the history of surfing! Have any of you seen a longer POV barrel ride or surfed a more awe-inspiring surf spot???

.

BELLA VITA the official trailer

Can a region surrounded by land produce world class surfing waves? Internationally acclaimed surf-filmmaker, Jason Baffa (singlefin: yellow, one california day, one beach) documents surfer, artist and environmentalist, Chris Del Moro on a pilgrimage back to his Italian homeland on what most perceive as a 'Don Quixotian' quest but transforms into a modern discovery seeped in culture, tradition and passion. Moreover, it is what Chris finds in the beauty of Italy and the distinctly passionate connection the Italian people have with family and tradition that reveals a greater truth.

Country: Italy / USA
Year: 2013
Language: English / Italian
Runtime: 82 min
