October 26th, 2014 The RUN is 33 out of 34 Weeks
Waist high or better, at least once a week. There was
Chest to head high surf from Wednesday to Friday
and waist high on Saturday thanks to that INTENSE
Nor'easter sitting off the coast all week.

The Love of New England Nor'easters and the debut of
local comic JIMMY DUNN's TV Show The McCarthy's!

Is it any wonder that I named my band the THE NOR'EASTERS back in 1986? I mean come on people. Think about that name for a moment. A blues rock 4 piece band from the heart of New England called THE NOR'EASTERS! That's a cool name even if I do say so myself. That name really depicted the style of music we played, and it also said where we were from. To this day, it is still the BEST band I ever played in. In fact, we are still together. Same original members too. "Look what just blew into town!"

My love of Nor'easters is shared by many of you. Not the band, but the actual storms themselves. Case in point, this week's Nor'easter. Damn that was an ass kicking storm. Rain, wind, and minor damage from the North Shore of Massachusetts to Northern Maine. We had some wind, rain, and semi cold temps. It is my friends, a sign of things to come. You all know that Old man winter is slowly waking up from his long summer slumber. And once he's awake, the shit will hit the fan. But we hearty New Englanders welcome the winter.

You kidding? Snow, ice, and wind means two things here.
Snowboarding and surfing. And we live for that shit.

But first things first. This last Nor'easter was classic. That beast sat off the coast like a demented step child. Spinning around causing all kinds of trouble with no real direction. It was as if the thing had a mind of it's own. When the sun popped out on Saturday it actually hurt my eyes. Of course by then, the swell had subsided. But there was still something to ride if you missed the big stuff during the week.

And let me tell you, there was plenty to ride this week.

That wind stayed favorable for days on end. And if you had your shit together you knew where to hit it. And judging by the mini crowds this week, it looked like quite a few of you got the memo on where it was breaking. There were pockets of quality surf these past few days.
Not exactly picture perfect for taking pics and viddy, but I did manage to squeeze off a few hundred pics and a significant amount of video.

For the most part the vibe was good in and out of the water.

The windy conditions I would imagine, make it harder for those who stand up on the SUPS. A welcome advantage for those who surf on shorter boards. I saw very little Stand Up activity this week. Not that I was out looking for them, I was just taking mental notes. I hope the SUP school guards don't report me for mentioning SUPS again.

I saw several boogie boarders this swell. But I didn't take any photos of them. I hope they don't tattle on me. So funny how sensitive we can all be. Any way, this wet swell was worth every rain drop. I saw everything from weak mushy surf, to absolute pounding surf. I mean I'm talking ass kicking, sand sucking, kick you in the teeth kind of surf.
Like this not so sexy beast.

It was impressive to see and document. This is head high, and not very friendly. I was calling this spot CAPE NH. And there were three locals riding these death caverns in the waning light on 10-24-14.

Kyle Linseman, Matt Colby, and Max Fatello. All riding shortboards.

Any other craft would be foolish. Except, you could ride a boogie board and you could body surf it. But longboards and SUPS would
be certain death. It was too short and violent for any craft over 6'8".

I hope I didn't offend anyone by saying that. But if I did? Make an appointment to talk to your therapist, because you need help. Lighten up people. It's just a surf blog. Try and see the humor in all of this.

Speaking of keeping things on the lighten up side and humor.

This week on Thursday October 30th at 9:30PM on CBS it's the debut of local comic Jimmy Dunn's TV sitcom The McCarthy's! I know that Jimmy has a ton of friends here on the seacoast and we have all been waiting for this day. PLEASE tell your friends and family to tune in this Thursday and watch this funny new show. I am actually playing that night from 6:30 to 8:30PM at FLTABREAD in Hampton and I will be pushing this show all night. In fact I even wrote a song about Jimmy.

This is going to be a fun night all around. TUNE in Thursday October 30th, 2014 at 9:30PM on CBS.

I found this pic of Jimmy and I from December of 2010. We were out surfing the Wall. Look how we are in step here. It looks like I was calling cadence. I may have been. This is a special photo because Ed O'Connell shot this. It was a clean day. Head high and just fun as shit out there.

I'm truly stoked for Jimmy. He is not only a funny bastard, he's also a good guy with a heart of gold. He's one of us. And the sitcom will ring true with so many families here in New England. The role he plays is perfect for Jimmy. Hell, he has practically lived it his entire life here. Sports, Boston, and the whole Irish family vibe is a perfect vehicle for Jimmy and this crew.

Let's support one of our own, and tune in this coming Thursday.

"Ed's Corner" pic this week is one from December, 2010.
This week's surfer is none other than Jimmy Dunn. I was out surfing with Jimmy on this day and lucky for us Ed was there on the wall shooting. I'm sure Jimmy remembers this day.

Now for Some Of My Weekly Global Observances

The big story this week continues to be the Ebola outbreak. And some random school shootings, some fence jumpers at the White House, and oh yeah ISIS. In other words it's business as usual in America. One tender moment occurred when President Obama embraced nurse Nina Pham after she was cleared from having Ebola. (The white house staff is keeping their fingers crossed). It is reported that Michelle slept in a Hazmat suit that night. Not for nothing, but this guy likes to live on the edge.
He's got people jumping the fence trying to get near him, his fellow dems campaigning want to stay as far away as possible from him (it's like George Bush in 2008), nobody wants to be associated with him. And now this? I'm slowly starting to respect the guy. Or maybe I feel sorry for him. Yea that's it. I feel sorry for him.

Okay, let's all take a minute, and enjoy the weekly
humiliation of the mastermind terrorist who killed 3,000 innocent civilians on September 11th, 2001. Here we see KSM getting a hug from the man himself. Look, if KSM had Ebola and then was cleared, would Obama hug his ass? Probably not. But that didn't stop me from doing this.

Khalid Sheik Mohammed (KSM), the mastermind behind 9-11
the captured Al Qeada ICON is getting his weekly slap in the
face. You're welcome KSM fans.

* Note to self: Must pick up a case of breath mints at Home
Depot this week.

(Below) I knew Jim Clifford for many many years. It would be an understatement to say that he was a unique individual. I always got a long with him. I could make him laugh and he and I enjoyed spending time both in the water and out in the woods. We shared many surf sessions and days afield. I hope he is truly at peace now. I made a short video from this session down in the video section. You should check it out. Photo by RALPH

Drifting in a Long Ago Daydream 1980 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

This clip was shot in 1980. It features a handful of old and dear friends. Jay Hammer, Jim Clifford, Jimmy Grey, Kevin Grondin and I believe the one guy on the red board is Stan Bocko. But I can't be 100% sure. I'm hoping that some of the old timers who see this clip will help ID this guy.

This might be the only clip of the late Jim Clifford surfing one of his favorite spots. I do recall that day. It was just Jay Hammer and Jim Clifford out there. Of course I joined them right after shooting. The clip also has my late dog Caley. She was a true beach dog. The music is by Robin Trower. That's all we ever listened to back in the day. Hendrix and Trower.

Hope you like this old scratchy, blurry trip down memory lane.

NOR'EASTER October 15, 2010 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

OK so it didn't really blow that hard out of the Northeast. It was mostly a strong East Wind that instantly went West. And it blew hard out of the west.

Still, it felt like a Nor'easter to me. So much in fact, that I dug up the song Jet Stream by my old band The Nor'easters. Seemed to fit the mood.

The two main surfers are Billy Ritchie and Toby Parke. I'm still mad that I missed the best session later in the day. I heard it was all time. DOH!@

Enjoy the overcast madness of our first Fall Nor'easter.

Ralph
