October 23rd, 2011-New RUN is 35 out of 35 Weeks.
Waist high or better, at least once a week.
The Surf on - Thursday-Friday was chest to head high. |
I got a call from Ed on Thursday as we were trying to coordinate our attack plan on getting you readers this week's photos. It was foggy on Thursday October 20th, 2011 and we were both waiting for the wind to come up and clear out the fog. I mean it was thick. But there was surf. You just couldn't see it.
Seeing it, is only a concern for photographers. Surfing it, is all together
different.
A handful of surfers had paddled out into the fog to surf one of the local points breaks up here. No one was thinking anything out of the ordinary. It was just another surf session.
One of the surfers was a friend who I just so happened to mention last week. Johnny Meehan. A local surfer. You may or may not know of him.
But that is not important. What is important is Ed's call to me.
"Did you hear about Johnny Meehan?" My first thought was something terrible had happened
and I braced myself for the news. "Someone broke into his truck and stole everything!" While I was relieved on one hand I was equally pissed on the other. While he was out surfing, criminals were breaking into his vehicle and stealing his wallet, credit cards, cellphone and other valuables.
And
YES his vehicle was locked! I was furious. I was pissed. I wanted to find that petty thief and kick his criminal ass up and down the beach. Then I settled down.
But not by much. I know times are tough.
But stealing from Surfers? I mean come on. Most of us are paupers...we barely get by as it is. To steal from a surfer is one
of the lowest forms of crime I can think of. Most surfers surf to forget the rat race, to forget the financial burdens, divorces, medical problems, jobs, whatever...we do it because it is our salvation. Our sanctuary. The one place where we can all go and be with nature. With God. Or be with mutual friends who all share the same stoke.
When someone violates that? That is the lowest and most despicable act.
The hassle Johnny has to now go through after surfing fun waves with his friends is just plain unfair. And then I heard that there were others who were hit that day and then the next day. All of them surfers. All hit while they were out surfing. That is so wrong on so many different levels. Really? Stealing from surfers? Come on.
And all of them had their keys hidden on their vehicles.
So that means one or two things to me. The criminals are either surfers, or friends with surfers, and they know where surfers hide their keys. If it is the former? That is sad. I mean that is really sad. Because if we find out? Well, suffice it to say, we will make an example out of you. And you will be banned from ever surfing here again. Not to mention all of the other legal angles we will take.
But to be scorned from our community? That is a punishment that no one wants.
I write week after week about how wonderful this community is. How great the surfers and our families are. And how good our surf can get. And for the most part it is true. 90% of it is like that. There will always be that 10%. When something like this happens? It turns all of this onto our ears. We become some third world ghetto. All of us feel it. We feel it when the vibe is good and we feel it when shit like this happens. If you need money that bad, I would bet anything that some surfer would lend you a hand. The same people you are stealing from would help you.
Stealing and breaking into locked vehicles is a crime. A real crime.
Stealing from surfers is a black mark. A scarlet letter. A darkness. Something that will follow you everywhere if we find out. And make no mistake about it. If you are working with others...they will open their stupid mouths because well let's face it, you're a freaking idiot criminal, and stupid petty criminals always get caught.
Why? Because you're stupid. Stupid loses every time.
My suggestion to you? Is to move away. Go seek help some where. Get better. Get a job. Get your shit together and then move back. Because if we find you in the act? Your ass is ours. Not to mention your stupid face will be on this weekly blog for all to see. Oh yea. I will go out of my way to let everyone know who this criminal is who is stealing from surfers.
Meanwhile, all you Good SURFERS need to hide your keys elsewhere. The over the tire or under bumper is not good anymore. The Criminals knows where you hide your keys.
You need to get creative. Or get one of those wetsuits that hold an extra set of keys. But honestly? Don't you too be stupid by making the criminal's job easier by hiding your keys in plain sight.
And everyone else? You need to be vigilant. Keep your eyes and ears open.
And do NOT be surprised if the person you see rifling through some's vehicle is someone you know.
Just turn and call the police or get help and subdue the criminal. Yes I said that. Grab the fool and then have someone call the police. I know you are not supposed to get involved with crime fighting. But hey. We're surfers. We take care of each other.
Keep your eyes and ears open. The criminal can't help themselves. If they think they can hit a vehicle that belongs to some surfer who is out surfing, he or she will strike. Yes it could be a woman, or it could be a pair. Look we have all seen enough criminals on TV. Lord knows that half of them are women. It's just the facts. I'm not making this crap up here. So you need to be aware. We ALL NEED TO BE MORE VIGILANT! Let's stop this before it gets worse.
Stealing from surfers is a crime.
Speaking of crimes. The ASK CRACKIE SERIES is now into our third week. I just heard that CRACKIE has his own Facebook page. Can you imagine that? If any of you have an questions for Crackie please email him directly.
Here's Crackie's email: crackie@adlantic.
He'd love to hear from you and I know he'd love to friend you on Facebook.
So next week is the 20th anniversary of the Halloween Storm of 1991. Better known as The Perfect Storm Swell. I'll be doing a full story on that HALLOWEEN HORROR. I want to cover it all. Because if you think back, (those of you who were around during that time period) there were waves that whole week. In fact, some of the days prior to that day, were absolutely insane.
I can remember surfing one particular break for a solid week leading up to that crazy day. I'm sure the days that followed were just as good too.
I'm looking for
photos and any video clips from that swell. I know I can't be the only person who shot that swell. I mean I can't be. Someone out there is sitting on some impressive footage and or stills. So get them out of those old boxes and get them to me. We'd all love to see what some of you might have, for that big 20th Anniversary of that impressive storm. Please send them off to me. DO IT NOW!
So until the next swell hits...know in your hearts that "Surfing Heals ALL Wounds..."
Now
for some of my Weekly Global Observances:
So I guess Kadaffy Duck should of listened to Barbara Walters...when she said he should step down. But Ole Kaddafy scorned her request saying that "My peoples love me. They all love me!" Really? Man that was nasty. They dragged his stupid dead ass through the streets and even brought his corpse into people's homes. Oh man. Can you imagine coming home from the goat herding job, and finding Kadaffy dead in your living room? Be like a weekend at Bernies or something. Damn.
I'm sorry if I offend any of you. NO I'm NOT. That asshole killed all those innocent civilians on PAN AM Flt 103 over Lockerbie in 1988...most of them Americans coming home for the holidays. Kadaffy has been skating free ever since. I'm happy he's gone.
I'M HAPPY K-DAFFY DUCK IS DEAD!!
By far, the MOST disturbing news of the week is the Ohio Exotic animal massacre. That was so freaking sad to watch Oh my God...all those rare Bengal Tigers, the lions, chimps, bears...all of it. So hard to watch. And even more harder to understand how some asshole like that had all of these animals on his farm. Am I missing something here? Or is this world really as crazy as it seems each week?
I guess the fact that the loser who did this had his head bitten by one of the big cats, is some sort of poetic justice. Except all the cats were killed by local authorities.
The Patriots BEAT the COWBOYS last week and are Number 1 in the AFC Division. Speaking of number 1...the ENDICOTT GULLS Football team are 8-0. Front page story this week on the Boston Globe Sports section. WEEI are talking about them. They are something else this year. Very exciting college football every Saturday to watch. Our son Max plays on the team but he is only a sophomore so he gets limited playing time, but come next year and the year after, we expect him to step up and lend a hand. He loves the game and he loves the team. EC is a great school and is right on the ocean.
There's surf within minutes of where his dorm is. Can you imagine that? Attending any school that is on the ocean and within minutes of decent surf? MVF I hope you realize how freaking lucky you are!

Yesterday- October 23rd 1983 The "First Terrorist attack"
(Below) There are days in our lives, where we will NEVER forget where and what we were doing when we heard the news about something significant. For me, this date is one of those. I had gotten up early before dawn to go surfing, when I turned on the TV to check the weather. It was on CNN, and I saw this news. 241 Americans killed in Beirut Lebanon by Iranian Terrorists. 220 Marines, 18 Navy sailors, and 3 Army Soldiers. I was stunned. It was the single biggest loss of live for the US MARINES since Iwo Jima in WWII. And it was the first time I ever cried while I was surfing. I knew one of the Marines who died that day. I also later met and knew of Marines who served in Beirut during that time period. One was a surfer from Hampton. In fact, my own soon to be Father-in-law Jerry served in Beirut. My soon to be wife had spent time in Beirut as well. This Veterans Day, my Post is paying a special tribute to the Vets who served our country from the End of the Vietnam War, to the start of the GWOT. In my opinion, they have become the new Forgotten Warriors. And we must NEVER FORGET. Photo from the USMC Official Hqtrs |

Here's the Third installment of the ASK CRACKIE series. This week's question is from a beginner older SUP rider from Massachusetts. He asks Crackie why some of the Local Surfers don't want to share the waves with him. Crackie gives him some great advice.
If you have a question for Crackie send them along to:
crackie@adlantic.com
Crackie now has his own Facebook Page. You should Friend Him...though there are no guarantees that he'll be nice to you.
Hope you all learn something from this informative Q&A.
Empty Waves and Empty Days from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo. This is just a bunch of footage of empty waves I found in my computer. Some of it has been seen before and some of it is new. The funny thing about empty waves is...they are timeless.
Waves themselves never change.
People and surfboards do, but never the wave itself.
The music is me plunking away on an old Upright Piano. I'm not really a keyboard player. I was feeling sad and lost when I started playing this...I may someday work it into a song. Then again, maybe not.
The other song is BHD LIVE which is basically me singing and playing my guitar, with Rich Appel on bass, and Salt on drums.
It's "Watchtower" by Jimi and it was recorded live last weekend at Toby Parke's Fundraiser. It's pretty raw...but then again, that's what I like. In your face, just a bare bones power trio. Guitar, bass, and drums.
Hope you like it.
