October 18th, 2015 The RUN is 22 out of 22 Weeks

Waist high or better, at least once a week. There was
waist high waves on October 14th, 2015

The One Afternoon Swell, the pain of breaking ribs, the pain
of watching cancer slowly take a family member away, and
The most absurd play in NFL history.

I'm always a bit concerned whenever I leave town. It's just that my gut instinct tells me that there will be waves when I'm gone. And even though Magic Seaweed said there were not any chances for waves last week, I saw a photo taken on October 14th, 2015 that proved otherwise. I was away in the mountains for a few day retreat. And
I left instructions with my son to grab the cameras in case there was
a swell. Long story short, he was at work all day and had after work functions he had to attend to.

But one woman named Nancy Rand took some
photos of the surf.

It does not take a forensic expert to prove that there were waves that day. Just a simple photo will do. Again, you can't really see how big it is, but I can tell from this pic, that there had to have been the
errant waist high wave to come through this day.

I guess I need to ask if anyone else saw this day. And if you did, did you surf it? Or did you shoot it? And if it's the latter, could you please send some to me. Thank you.

So I mentioned that I was up north in the mountains. Typically I spend a good deal of my October up there. I love it there. As do all of my friends and family. This is one of the spots I look forward to seeing each year.

This was the exact spot where I fell and broke several of my ribs. Now I'm not sure how many of you have ever broken your ribs, but I can assure you, that it is one of the most painful injuries I have ever felt. You can't do anything. Hence the reason for the blog being a day late. But I'm serious, it affects everything. Like for instance, breathing. If you are like me, you need to breathe. Am I right people? So having problems breathing is a bummer. The terrible thing about broken ribs is....they can't do anything for you. It's true. Pain meds and rest.

Both of which I have a problem with.

I can't rest. And the pain meds give me a false sense of being OK and I tend to push myself. So I'm dammed if I do, and dammed if I don't. The other shitty news about broken ribs is...it takes a LONG time to heal. A very long time. And I don't have a lot of time to sit around and do nothing. I'll let you know how I do from week to week.

The Fatello siblings. Ralph, Donna, Johnny, Gale, Evamarie,
and David.

Today is my kid sister's birthday. Evamarie is 58 today. She is in the fight of her life. Cancer. We all know, that we are leaving this earth someday. I have always thought that we should leave in the order we came. Evamarie should be next to the last. We have all heard the saying "Life is not fair..." that maybe true in some cases.
And it may be true for Evamarie. But I think she will agree, that living into your adult years is a blessing these days. And for those of us who have lived well into and beyond our 50's have much to be thankful for.

She's not ready to leave today. But I know, in my gut. that she will be soon. And when that day happens, she will be surrounded by her loving family and friends.

Happy Birthday Evamarie. I love you. We all love you.

I'd like to thank the latest sponsor of the BLOG. MY DOG'S MIND
in Hampton. The KIRBY family are well known on the seacoast and beyond. Founded by Terence Kirby, the surf community and all dog lovers know of them. The Kirbys are surfers who love dogs.
Terence has a keen eye and a canine soul. His ability to read the mind of our dogs is nothing short of amazing. It takes a special individual to train a dog. And The Kirby's all possess that trait.
I highly
recommend them.

"Ed's Corner" pic this week is a shot from February 14th, 2014. The surfer is someone on a blue board. I'm sure I know him, I just can't put a name to this image. To see more of Ed's pics just hit the archives tab and scroll through the years and see some of Ed's work.

Be sure to pick up the new SFOD movie The COLD COAST
and check out the extra feature of Ed O'Connell's gallery.

Each week I will feature one of Ed's great pics from this blog.

Now for Some Of My Weekly Global Observances
The MOST absurd play that any of us have ever seen in the NFL happened last night as the COLTS hosted the PATRIOTS for the 8:30 Sunday Night Game. I have never seen the likes of this.
And if you were tuned into the game and saw it, you would KNOW exactly what I'm talking about. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. So here's the photo.

This move cost them the game. The Patriots got the ball back on the Colts 35 yard line. Then went on to score. The Colt's coach tried to explain the play the best he could in the post game interviews. None of what he had to say made sense.

He is in shock here. He said that they were not supposed to snap the ball. But once that ball moved it was a moot point. I wonder how many Colt fans are calling the Patriots cheaters this morning? Pathetic. They actually had a shot before the snafu call.

Luck: "Thanks for not running the score up Tom. "
Brady: "Go fuck yourself Shit. As in 'Shit' Luck. Hey did you
notice how you guys DEFLATED the entire stadium?"

Not likely that any of these candidates will beat TRUMP.

No matter what they sing and dance to. They are all the same.

Did you see any of this? These two alone were worth the watch.

What's this? KSM as a cross dresser? Advising Bernie?

Please my friends, enjoy the weekly humiliation of the master mind behind the September 11th, 2001 attacks. The man who was behind the killing of 3,000 innocent civilians. The number two big dog of Al Qeada. Khalid Sheik Mohammed.

* Note to self, must pick up a case of NAIR at Home Depot.

*HAPPY BIRTHDAY October babies.

Please keep my sister Evamarie in your thoughts and prayers
and continue to send positive thoughts to our dear friend Meghan Evans and family, same with surf photographer Andrew Rebeiro and my dear friend Greg Brooks. Also say a prayer for my good friend Robert Gerard. And please continue to pray for local Hampton surfers Terry Morrison and Rick Fiorentini and their families. And lastly, please pray for Dave O'Connor. A good man, a great mentor to so many kids, and a wonderful school principal.

A Wave a day for 365 consecutive days.
Yesterday- Late Summer of 1965. Me and my favorite board of all time. My 8' 3" Keoki. That's my kid sister Evamarie standing off to the side. My dad would bring half the family to the beach if it was just a surf mission.
(Below) This is one of three photos I have of that board. It was a Red Keoki 8' 3" single string board. I regretted the day I let that go. All to buy a bigger board that I ended up hating. This board was magical. I can still hear her on the open face. My sister Evamarie joined me and my dad. I'm sure she was bored out of her mind. I would have been. Photo by Gus Fatello

HURRICANE JOAQUIN

Hurricane Joaquin swept up the eastern Seaboard the first week of October, and gave every surfer from Florida to Nova Scotia some fun sized waves. And...the water temps were amazingly warm. So those of us who call New Hampshire our home, were treated with the same menu. Fun, head high, warm, and hollow surf. The boys and girls were all over this Joaquin swell, like flies on rotting seaweed. The buzz was hi-speed connections. Cell phones, text messaging, IM's, PM's, tweets, and whatever else we use.

The local crew I was with had more than their share. Kody Grondin, Weston Rogers, James Morse, Mike Stanek, Kyle Linseman, Max Fatello, Carter Walsh, Shane Forsley, and a shitload more. The music is by QWILL and Jimi. Check out QWILL at qwillmusic.com Thanks to all the surfers for making this a fun edit. See ya on the next one. Ralph

SUMMER Twenty Fifteen

These are the Summer clips from 2015 here in NH. I will have a video from the MOLLY 2015, and the Wounded Warriors 2015, as well as the good clips from the last hurricane season. They will be coming soon. Meanwhile, this video was really just the last two months. But it features the following locals. Mikey Evans, Kody Grondin, Kevin Grondin, Jesse Gould, Max Fatello, Shayne Forsley, Ryan McGill, Tyler McGill, Hannah Vokey, Julie Jakoboski, James Morse, Jon Kiskinis, Robert Matuely, Gilly Donatelli, Rick Evans, Lars Hamilton, Skip Brunette, Ana Brunette, Elizabeth Ann, Melinda, Tom Hay, Jared Hay, and a whole bunch more. It's 14 minutes long. The surfing is, well, it's locals surfing a local break. Soundtrack is from two of my favorite artists, Nuno and BH. So grab a cup, sit back, and watch the boys and the girls have some summer fun. And look for the next few videos soon. My name is Ralph and I approve this description.
