The ANNUAL SURF ART BLOG

I would be really surprised if any of you, never did any kind of surf doodling. I can't tell you how many times I got lost in my surf doodling. And you all know, I am speaking to surfers only. Or to those of you who have been around surfers and surfing for quite sometime. I wish I had some of those old doodles.

After shooting the surf this morning, I actually sat down and doodled about four drawings in under an hour. I used my ball point pen and some crayons that belong to our grand daughter. Let's face it, we all had crayons at one point in our lives. In fact, I love seeing the kids drawings at Flatbread. Some of those kids are super talented. And I have seen some cool surf art form those kids. Again, I so wished I'd saved some.

I did this with a ball point pen. It took me about 10 minutes. It's a doodle. It is not suitable for framing. But clearly, you can see that it's a wave. And if you have any kind of imagination, you can pretend to be a cartoon figure, and surf that wave.

I know that many artists do some
preliminary sketches before starting the final piece. My main surf artist inspiration Rick Griffin, would do many rough sketches before slapping down the paint.

Griffin was the man. I know my fellow artist and musician friend Stan Chew feels the same. Speaking of Stan, I need to get this off my chest. I honestly feel that the three best surf artists on the seacoast are: Stan Chew, Sam Vokey, and Hannah Vokey. They are in my opinion, the best of the crop. They are professional artists, who spend a great deal of time perfecting their art. Unlike me.

And they all have a unique style. Each one, has a style that is fast becoming a popular item on the seacoast. Typically, I have the Surf Art Blog/column in the summer. But I thought closer to the holidays might make better sense. Especially if you are in the market to purchase a print or an original piece of surf culture. Tis the season.

The new guy on the national surf artist block is really not that new. Hardly. I'm talking about Bill Odgen. I love his style and his use of color. Something about Bill's paintings that seem to come to life.

We should all go out and buy his new book. Like I said, his art
seems to come to life.

I know where this place is. I've actually surfed it. I'd love to get a print of this amazing piece of surf art.

Another super talent is Phil Roberts. I would think that both Odgen
and Roberts would tout Griffin as their big influence. Their styles are very
reminiscent of Griffin's.

Behold the surf art of Phil Roberts. I would strongly
recommend that you google the three artists that I have mentioned here. Rick Griffin, Bill Odgen, and Phil Roberts. You will have a better feeling and understanding of the magical wonderful world of Surf Art.

"Ed's Corner" pic this week is a shot from December 2009.
The empty wave at Chowdah Heads. To see more of Ed's pics just hit the archives tab and scroll through the years and see some of Ed's work. It's worth the trip down memory lane.

Be sure to pick up the new SFOD movie The COLD COAST
and check out the extra feature of Ed O'Connell's gallery.

Each week I will feature one of Ed's great pics from this blog.

Now for Some Of My Weekly Global Observances

When you finally get around to reading this blog we will all know if the New England Patriots are still undefeated. The Pats are playing the Broncos tonight without Peyton Manning. Ordinarily, that would be good news for us Pats fans. But, Manning has been falling apart as of late and his replacement was NFL's offensive player of the week. Brock Osweiler.

Apparently this guy can throw a football. Let's hope he folds under the Sunday Night glare. And Let us all hope that Brady and Company will find a way to beat these Donkeys even with our two "go to" guys. Edleman and Amendola.

Next man up. That's the NE Patriots way. Next man up.

How can we really be concerned when we have these two?

There is one NEW surf artist I forgot to mention that has been quite successful as of late. Drew Brophy. Another surf artist who owes much of his success to Rick Griffin.

There is one other NEW surf artist that I must mention. And that's KSM. KSM loves to paint in the nude. Here we see the hairy beast with one of his latest creations. Flowers for Kelly Slater.

Please my friends, enjoy the weekly humiliation of the master mind behind the September 11th, 2001 attacks. The man who was behind the killing of 3,000 innocent civilians. The number two big dog of Al Qeada. Khalid Sheik Mohammed.

* Note to self, must pick up a case of HAIR REMOVER
at Home Depot.

*Thank you for all the touching PM's. emails, cards, etc etc.
Rest In Eternal Peace Evamarie Fatello11-7-15

Please send positive thoughts to surf photographer Andrew Rebeiro and my dear friend Greg Brooks. Please add Mike Keefe to your list. Mike's a local surfer who has been surfing these parts for decades. Also say a prayer for my good friend Robert Gerard. And please continue to pray for local Hampton surfers Terry Morrison and Rick Fiorentini and their families. Please pray for Dave O'Connor. A good man, a great mentor to so many kids, and a wonderful school principal.
*I'm adding a close dear friend of mine. Marine SSGT George Masten. A combat Marine who served in Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded the purple heart for wounds received in Vietnam in 1967. George is battling cancer. PLEASE say a prayer for him.

Please Support ALL The photographers who contribute to Ralph's Pic Of The Week every week for the last 9 years. **Think about BUYING a HIGH RES Photo from any of the weeks on RPOTW.

Remember my friends... Surfing Heals All Wounds

Pray for Surf. Pray for Peace. Surf For Fun.

Yesterday- "Lizard Head" Surf Doodle 1972
(Below) This was done in my first year of college. I know I did hundreds of
surf doodles. Sometimes I'd get in trouble and other times I'd get lost in my surf day dreams. I'm sure you can all relate. Being in a classroom when you KNOW there's surf. That's hard to do. Though let's face it, we all need a good education. Not everyone is going to make the Top 100 in surfing.

HURRICANE JOAQUIN

Hurricane Joaquin swept up the eastern Seaboard the first week of October, and gave every surfer from Florida to Nova Scotia some fun sized waves. And...the water temps were amazingly warm. So those of us who call New Hampshire our home, were treated with the same menu. Fun, head high, warm, and hollow surf. The boys and girls were all over this Joaquin swell, like flies on rotting seaweed. The buzz was hi-speed connections. Cell phones, text messaging, IM's, PM's, tweets, and whatever else we use.

The local crew I was with had more than their share. Kody Grondin, Weston Rogers, James Morse, Mike Stanek, Kyle Linseman, Max Fatello, Carter Walsh, Shane Forsley, and a shitload more. The music is by QWILL and Jimi. Check out QWILL at qwillmusic.com Thanks to all the surfers for making this a fun edit. See ya on the next one. Ralph
