GOODBYE OCTOBER...Thank You Patricia.

I'm
still hurting in the rib department. They said it would take months to heal. I'm sort of patient. So I'm still waiting. It does not hurt nearly as bad as it did the first couple of weeks. That was painful.

Besides I have a new pain to deal with. My left leg got messed up last Monday. I was in the same general area. Near the 45th parallel. And I was doing the same thing. Chasing after "Bonassa Unbellus" with my energetic GSP-. Patch.

Patch is an amazing canine in those deep woods. It's hard to keep up with him. Especially with broken ribs. He was doing what he does best (pointing a Grouse) when I fell again, and really hurt my left leg. How bad? Well take a look.

Looks bad huh. It hurt like hell. But, the good news is the pain is now distributed evenly across my body. It's all about ballistics my friends. My wife and close friends want to shoot me. And perhaps at some time in the future, that might not be such a bad idea. Meanwhile, I'm heading back up this week. I can't very well surf with broken ribs now can I? So off I go again, hopefully to stay upright this time.

My wife and I had recently figured out why I keep falling.

I am not sure how many of you knew that I had ruptured my ear drum last summer. It was the third time for that ear. Well, long story short, ever since I did that, I have been falling all over the place. It must be my equilibrium. Because I am forever tilting and catching myself. I am scheduled to have my ears drilled (oh yea, had it done in the early 90's). Not fun. I have exostosis (surfer's ear).

And one more time for all you surfers who DO NOT wear earplugs.

PUT THEM IN YOUR EARS BEFORE YOU CAUSE SOME SERIOUS DAMAGE. Surgery means 3 months out of the water. You guys getting this? THREE MONTHS! 3 freaking months.

NOT FUN...don't believe me? Google it.

You know, I wait all year for October and once it gets here she's gone before you know it. I swear the older you get, the faster time goes by. I love this time of year. October. And she did not disappoint us this year. Hurricane Patricia came roaring through Mexico and the Gulf, then she tore up through the
Tennessee valley bringing floods and record amounts of rain. By the time the remnants of Patricia reached us, she had settled down enough to provide us with perfect surf.

I guess this can be considered one of those 100 year storms. Though they seem pretty frequent these days. I was not alone in thinking that Mexico was going to get wiped off the map.

Al Roker thought the same thing. Patricia was an ass kicking storm for sure. Mexico dodged a big
bullet there. Big time.

I don't think anyone was killed. It was amazing that no one did.

But we all scored later in the week when Patty came to our doors for Trick or Treat. Two solid days of head high surf.

October Hurricanes are the best. The very best.

ALL WOUNDS"

Now for Some Of My Weekly Global Observances

All this talk about Hurricane Patricia had me thinking about the New England Patriots defensive coach Matt Patricia. After beating the JETS The Patriots beat the Dolphins. They are now 7-0. We are one of three or four teams who are still undefeated

The look that Patricia brings to this team is classic. The beard, the backwards hat. His youthful appearance. The top three coaches all work well together. And with Bill being a defensive genius you just know that this guy has his shit together, otherwise Bill would of bounced him out the door years ago.

They work well together. The haters are going to hate no matter what, so the only thing the team and coaches can do is to keep playing the way they are playing. You will not hear me utter the 2007 season, or our 5th Superbowl Ring. Homie don't play that game. I'm just enjoying the ride every week, and it's been one
hell of a ride so far.

KSM was in a bad place when Hurricane Patricia started across the Gulf. No one knew if she would head west and take out GITMO. KSM's baby sitter was terrified that her little terrorist would be in danger, so she ran into the compound and scooped up the frightened little Al Qeada leader. He and his sitter made it.

Please my friends, enjoy the weekly humiliation of the master mind behind the September 11th, 2001 attacks. The man who was behind the killing of 3,000 innocent civilians. The number two big dog of Al Qeada. Khalid Sheik Mohammed.

* Note to self, must pick up a case of candles at Home Depot.

*HAPPY BIRTHDAY Eva Fatello October 28th
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JoEllen Bunton October 29th.
RIP Toby....The kindest and sweetest Beagle on the seacoast. RIP "Bo" the Linseman Huskie. That dog was so cool and he loved everyone.

Please keep my sister Evamarie in your thoughts and prayers
and continue to send positive thoughts to our dear friend Meghan Evans and family, same with surf photographer Andrew Rebeiro and my dear friend Greg Brooks. Please add Mike Keefe to your list. Mike's a local surfer who has been surfing these parts for decades. Also say a prayer for my good friend Robert Gerard. And please continue to pray for local Hampton surfers Terry Morrison and Rick Fiorentini and their families. Please pray for Dave O'Connor. A good man, a great mentor to so many kids, and a wonderful school principal.
*I'm adding a close dear friend of mine. Marine SSGT George Masten. A combat Marine who served in Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded the purple heart for wounds received in Vietnam in 1967. George is battling cancer. PLEASE say a prayer for him.

Please Support ALL The photographers who contribute to Ralph's Pic Of The Week every week for the last 9 years. **Think about BUYING a HIGH RES Photo from any of the weeks on RPOTW.

Yesterday- The REAL Halloween Storm 10-30-91
(Below) There was really only one storm that hit on Halloween that will never be topped. The PERFECT STORM on October 30th, 1991.The surf that week was some of the BEST surf I had ever seen and surfed. When a Nor'easter and a Hurricane mated...the result was this "Perfect Storm". The surf on October 30th, 1991 was the BIGGEST surf I had ever seen in New England. And I'm talking about 51 years worth of documenting surf here. I made a clip from that storm. It is down in the video section. It's a little long, but worth watching. Photo by RALPH

HURRICANE JOAQUIN

Hurricane Joaquin swept up the eastern Seaboard the first week of October, and gave every surfer from Florida to Nova Scotia some fun sized waves. And...the water temps were amazingly warm. So those of us who call New Hampshire our home, were treated with the same menu. Fun, head high, warm, and hollow surf. The boys and girls were all over this Joaquin swell, like flies on rotting seaweed. The buzz was hi-speed connections. Cell phones, text messaging, IM's, PM's, tweets, and whatever else we use.

The local crew I was with had more than their share. Kody Grondin, Weston Rogers, James Morse, Mike Stanek, Kyle Linseman, Max Fatello, Carter Walsh, Shane Forsley, and a shitload more. The music is by QWILL and Jimi. Check out QWILL at qwillmusic.com Thanks to all the surfers for making this a fun edit. See ya on the next one. Ralph
