Memorial Day Weekend...

Not sure what this day, or this weekend means to most of you, but for me, and a bunch of you out there, it's a time to stop and reflect on those who have lost their lives while in the service of our country. I know I sound a bit old fashioned to some of you, but truth be told, I have lost friends in combat. Lost as in gone from this earth, forever.

I am always surprised when I hear of people I know, that are of a certain age, that should know the significance of this day, yet they have no idea or clue as to what this day is all about. I mean honestly? Everyone should know. Young and old.

For you 20 something's out there, you must have friends who have served, or is serving, who may or may not be, in harms way. And some of you I know, have also lost loved ones and friends in the many wars we have lived through.

Let's face it. Some of us older surfers are from the baby boomer generation. We were spawned from our WWII parents that put us right smack into the Vietnam war era. Our moms and dads served in WWII and Korea. Vietnam lasted 10 years. So there's a good chance that some of you either served, or surfed, during that time period.

I did both. As did local surf photographer Ed O'Connell (above). After all, Vietnam was a surf war. In fact, it was the first surf war.

During the sixties, hundreds of thousands of surfers served in the military. Most were drafted, but there were plenty of others who enlisted. We surfed and we served. And like all wars, some never made it back. It's hard to think of surfers fighting and dying in a war. Ed O'Connell saved many lives during his tour in Vietnam.
Ed was a medic who saw his fair share of action. Ed flew into some hot LZ's to pick up wounded soldiers. He saved many a young life. He may have saved a surfer or two, who lived
another day, to surf another day.

But from 1965 to 1975, plenty of surfers lost their lives in Nam.

Like Joe Somogyi from Hampton, pictured here on the right standing next to Kevin Grondin at 10th Street, at Hampton's infamous Wall. Joe died of exposure to Agent Orange that was sprayed in places he served in Vietnam in 1969. He died in 1978.
Joe helped name a lot of the surf breaks that we all surf.

He was something very special to those of us who knew him. There is not a single Memorial Day that goes by that I don't think of him. In fact, I think of him often. Man he is missed by many.

Then there's Danny Healy a US Navy SEAL from Exeter, NH. He died in Afghanistan trying to rescue four of his men on a mountain surrounded by Taliban fighters on June 25th, 2005. Danny was a local surfer. He left behind a loving family who miss him every single day.

Dan's name is engraved on the monument in front of the American Legion Post 35 in Hampton. This Memorial Day, stop and think of the many thousands of Americans like Dan, who sacrificed their lives for our very freedom. And think of their families they left behind. Because, they too have sacrificed.

Speaking of sacrifices. There's a benefit at Hampton's Flatbread Company on June 18th, 2013 from 5PM to 9PM to help sponsor the local American Legion Post 35 and their Wounded Warriors projects like HIT THE BEACH. See poster below.

This is a touching tribute to Vietnam Veterans. If you know
any Nam vets share this with them.

Now for Some Of My Weekly Global Observances:

I am not shy when it comes to reminding everyone I know and don't know just exactly what this day is all about. So again. Monday May 27th, 2013 is a day to remember our fallen and the sacrifices they and their families have made for our rights and freedom to do the things we do.

OK so I have a soft spot in my heart for KSM. So I let him visit the tall gangly late Osama Bin laden at OBL's gravesite. Of course all that is visible is OBL's one sandal. The rest of him have been eaten by all the bottom feeding fish. Poor KSM. He seems so miserable even with this weekend of visiting his fellow terrorist. I guess these damn terrorists can't be happy no matter what you try and do for them.

Enjoy this special Memorial Day humiliation of the mastermind who killed 3,000 innocent Americans on September 11, 2001.

Yesterday- Ed O'Connell Vietnam 1968.
(Below) Many of you know Ed O'Connell from the amazing surf photos he shoots week after week for this blog. Before he was shooting surf photos for RPOTW he was saving lives in Vietnam as an Army Medic. There are many Vietnam Vets walking around today because this kid saved their lives. On this Memorial Day 2013, I want to Thank Ed publicly for being that ARMY Medic who calmed down scared kids who thought they were gonna die, and rendered enough medical aid on the battlefields to keep them from dying. When Ed found out I was a Vietnam Vet, he wrote to me saying "I'm glad you made it back..." Well, I'm glad you made it back too Ed. We're all glad you made it back.

Between The Lines: Surfing During The Vietnam War -
OFFICIAL TRAILER - SURF

Narrated by acclaimed writer and director JOHN MILIUS (Apocalypse Now-Big Wednesday), BETWEEN THE LINES explores the Vietnam War through the prism of the surfing sub-culture. This documentary film offers unique insight into the
dramatic effect that the Vietnam War and draft had on young American men who rode waves.

BETWEEN THE LINES delves into the lives of two surfers who chose opposite paths, Pat Farley and Brant Page. Pat Farley, a heavy combat vet, volunteered for service in Vietnam and was discharged with a full psychiatric pension. Conversely, Brant Page evaded the draft and fled to the surf rich Hawaiian Islands where he was unceasingly pursued and eventually arrested by the FBI.

While following the lives of these two surfers the film chronicles the impact of the Vietnam War on the surfing lifestyle. From the peaceful shores of Hawaii to the canopy jungles of Vietnam, BETWEEN THE LINES excavates the surfing cultures response to
an extraordinary circumstance.

AN ODE TO JOE

This is a compilation of old super 8mm movie film that I shot of my late best friend Joe Somogyi and the rest of our old crew back in the early to mid 70's here in Hampton. Ed OConnell also shot some of the footage. Joe was one of the original pioneers and he named a bunch of the breaks here in New Hampshire.

There's a few clips of the late Moira Daly as well.

The song is called "Hey Joe (old friend)". I wrote it about Joe back in 1985 and my old band the Nor'easters recorded it at Syncro Sound in Boston. I know we did several versions of that song with John Carden, and then with David Robinson. I thought it would be a nice tie-in to Memorial Day Weekend. Seeing how Joe died of exposure to Agent Orange he got in Vietnam.

He died in 1978. 8 years after he returned home.

Crackie's still on a retreat with this being the start of our 10th year. We are still in contract negotiations and quite frankly, he's being unreasonable. So until we can reach an agreement with his agent. We are putting him on ice for the time being.

However, if you have a question for Crackie, no matter how
stupid, or absurd, please send it here...crackie@adlantic.com

You can also check Crackie out on Facebook. You should Friend Him...though there are no guarantees that he'll be nice to you.
