SPRING done SPRUNG and The Temps Dropped again.

Just a few weeks ago the six of us were in PR digging the sun, surf, and each others friendship. Today we're back in Winterland. By "we" I mean the Berardinis and Cory and I. The Grondins will remain in paradise until the warm days return again. The dropping temps two days after the first day of Spring was tough to deal with. I swear, February and March got mixed up this year. This whole March "Comes In Like a Lion-And Goes out Like a Lamb" is just not working for me. Am I right people? It's crazy.

March 20th, 2017 the first day of Spring. Prior to this day we had single digit air temps. But on this day she rose to a balmy 40 degrees. And the surf was going off. I was calling it a solid 4-6'. But every now and then a rogue set would catch everyone off guard. The image above is a video frame grab. And if you look closely you will see a head bobbing facing shoreward. That head belongs to Terence Kirby who wrote that he had the "worst thrashing of his life out there." Those are powerful words and they should not be taken lightly.

I've known Terence for quite sometime and I don't consider him one for exaggerating surf stories. It doesn't have to be 20' to get your ass kicked. A 6-8' wave can do some serious damage. Just ask Terence when it's 10' tall.

Two days later it went back to single digits. So much for Spring.

The day the snow got soft I had my two grandkids help me build a snowman family. The days that followed were in the single digits so the Snow Family hung around. In fact, they are still out there. Mommy, Daddy, big sister, and little baby. This was all my granddaughter's idea.

Speaking of babies. Tomorrow is our baby's 22nd birthday. Hard to believe. But then again, not really. I have grown accustomed to the clock speeding up on me. You younger readers will soon find out how time accelerates the older you get. It's true. One day you hold a baby in your arms and the next day, she's off to school and beyond. We're fortunate enough to have our three adult children close enough by to stay in close touch.

This is a pic from the hospital. March 27th, 1995. Welcome Noelle Victoria.

My three girls. Gabby, Noelle, and Cory. It was our final child. We have three kids and now have two grandchildren but for awhile there we had three toddlers running around the house. I wouldn't change that for anything.

We all traveled to surf destinations together and had wonderful vacations.
This is Noelle in Costa Rica in 2003. That was such a fun trip. The kids had a blast. We all surfed and tried to hide from the blistering sun. I have tons of video and pics from all of our family trips. I swear, I have turned into my dad who took a million rolls of film and movies. And thank God he did. Because we all love looking at the old pics and video. Someday our kids will do the same. If you're a young parent you better start recording these days, because one day they will be out of the house, and they won't be babies anymore.

You'll have to wait for grandchildren. And they grow just as fast.

The family that surfs together stays together. Or so I have been known to say.
It is true though. When surfing stays with you, and is interwoven into the bloodline, it sure makes for easy vacation destinations. I used to joke when they were kids. "If you want to live in my house you have to surf!" And they all did. The girls still surf on occasion, but my son is rabid like his dad used to
be. The only way to get good at surfing is to go surfing.

This week's pic from Ed's corner was shot on October 18th, 2013. The surfer is Ryan Reed. Like most regular Goofy foots he has this spot dialed in. I've shot a lot of video of Ryan in the last 5 or so years. .

To see more of Ed's pics just scroll through the archives. He has shot so many pics for the blog. Each week I will feature one of Ed's great pics from this blog. Photo by Ed O'Connell

Now for Some More Of My Weekly Global Observances
The Police and FBI have cracked the missing TB 12 jersey caper. Some weasel from Mexico was the culprit. He is an unnamed International Media member. If you have not seen the video you need to check it out. Talk about being brazen and having a pair of brass balls. His motive was to wait until things died down a bit and then he was to contact Brady and SELL Brady back his own Jersey.

You know, I'm all for capital punishment in murder cases and child molestations. But I usually draw the line there. However, I might be persuaded to see this scumbag get in the chair, or take the needle. You don't steal Tom Brady's Jersey on the BIGGEST GAME EVER
in the NFL and expect not to pay dearly for this crime. You must pay the piper Senor Loser.

This is the weasel (below). They have an isolated video of this clown walking off the field and into the locker room. He goes over to Brady's locker and takes the jersey out of Brady's bag and tucks it under his arm and walks out. He puts the jersey into his bag as he walks back out onto the field. What balls.

Turns out he also stole Von Miller's jersey from last year's Super Bowl. Damn. I guess he was going to get Miller to buy back his jersey too.
Who does this kind of shit? Assholes. Losers. Punks. That's who.

Local comic Jimmy Dunn is out on the West Coast doing his MONSTAH TOUR. Here check this out.

Look if you're in the area, check out one of Boston's Best comics.

KSM Photoshop of the Week
How could all the surveillance cameras not pick up on the guy on the far right? You see him. You know who it is. It's that sneaky little Al Qeada Terrorist again. God dang KSM. Now how the hell did he get in that locker room? Nobody saw him? Nobody smelled him? You have to think he had something to do with the stolen Jersey. I'll say this about KSM he is one slippery terrorist who seems to show up in the least expected locations.

So my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed).

*Note to self -must pick up a case of Anti Fungus Foot Powder

SPRING DAY March 20th, 2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

First day of Spring. And just like that, the air temps rose up into the 40's and the sun came out. The snow started to melt, and the surf? Well she was rocking! The usual suspects appear in this web edit. Kai Nichols, Matt Colby, Johnny Meehan, Markey J, Casey Lockwood, Terence Kirby, Kody Grondin, Andy Elliott, Perry Reynolds, Max Fatello and a bunch of others. * There is one large set that some of the boys got caught in, and one in particular (Terence Kirby) said it was the worst THRASHING he ever had. Those are powerful words, and they should be cautionary words to all. It doesn't have to be 20' to get your ass kicked. A 6-8' wave can do just as much damage. My tip: "Keep your wits about you, and learn how to hold your breath, while spinning underwater, bouncing off boulders. It will end sooner or later." Music is by KING'S X and HENDRIX. Quit your complaining...it's SPRING!

DMD (Dogmans-Marias-Domes) March 2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

DMD is short for Dogmans, Marias and Domes. None of these spots are secret. So I don't believe I will increase the already crowded line-ups at these spots. PR is funny. There are times when you can get it almost to yourself, and others when you can share your session with a few hundred of your not so close friends. Yet, there are still plenty of empty waves getting by. So go figure. There are lots of unknowns in this web edit, and some known. I'll try and list those that I know. Kevin "Doc" Grondin, Kody Grondin, Ray King, Brian Morse, Jake Davidson, Bill Ryan, Ryan McGill, Rosalita, Kim, Cory, Tony, and Shelly. I dedicated the edit to Brian Ward, the surfer who died out at Dogmans on that first Monday we were here. Music is by King's X and Carlos Santana. *A BIG Thank you to the Grondins for their generous and loving hospitality. There's not enough space to tell you both, how much we love you.

STELLA March 15-2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

What is there to say about a storm that kicked the living snot out of the Seacoast? Well, how about the downed trees, power outages, accidents, fires, snow that turned into cement, and what else? Oh yeah I remember, INSANE SURF! And it lasted for two days. Crazy but beautiful. The surfers in this web edit that I remember are: Kai Nichols, Perry Reynolds, Chris Stelman, Max Fatello, Tom Hay, Jared Veltsos, Andy Elliott, Joel Feid, and a bunch of others. The music is by All Time Low, Ida Maria, and Willie Nelson. It's 13 minutes and 33 seconds long. Stella you were one crazy but beautiful storm. Come back anytime. Just call first.

New Hampshire To Puerto Rico 1990 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

In March of 1990, four NH surfers went to PR for a much needed tropical break. Kevin "Doc" Grondin, Mike "Zappy" Paugh, John Duffy McCarthy, and yours truly. The cold and the snow was getting to us. Kevin and I left our pregnant wives home. Or rather, they LET US GO. I'm sure there was some kind of deal involved. But seriously folks, is there any wonder why we are still married to them? Love you both! Kim and Cory! It's hard to believe this was 27 years ago. Where does the time go...I don't want to know, I'm just filing space here. The soundtrack is by Beautiful People using Hendrix samples. The results are so cool. Check it out!

PR Winter 2014 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

This is the footage I shot in March of 2014. There's some Big Tres here and some other funky little spots. *Note The large surf at Wildos is worth the price of admission alone. There's additional footage from Max.

The music is from Miguel Tito Rodriguez. I met Miguel in Rincon last winter. He was playing outside with his bass player and I was completely blown away by his playing. The song is called De Juno. The man can rip on the six string. I hope you like this little Tropical Clip.

Ralph
