A Break In The Endless Winter Storms, Saying Goodbye
To February And Spock.

I'm not going to miss February. Hardly. I mean if I were still into the snowboarding scene like I was when I was younger, that would be one thing. But I'm not as stoked on the cold as I once was. I've realized that the older you get, the colder you get. Not to say that I won't still hit the slopes this winter. I will. And I also know that once I'm flying down a mountain with some friends and I hit some powder, that stoke will come back ten fold. I do know that.

I see photos of young parents with their kids on the mountains and I smile. I fondly remember those days. And I also remember when I would take my son and his cousins snowboarding. Those were wonderful times spent on our mountains here in New Hampshire.
We all miss our Michael Colby. Still hard to believe he's gone.

There are life lessons out there. Addiction is just one of many.

I hope that Jesse, Max, and myself will take that snow day up north as we said we would in Michael's memory. I really hope we do.

Last Sunday night was the Fund raiser for Meghan Evans (left). It was held at Wally's on the main beach. February 22nd, 2015The night was filled with talented musicians, artists, and some great swag donated by local surf shops and other merchants. It was a fun night for a great cause. For me personally, it was special. Anytime I can play with The NOR'EASTERS is a good time for me.

This was a bitter sweet night though for Mike White. Our bass player. Mike just lost his wife Deb a month prior to the show to cancer. Playing a fund raiser for someone who's battling cancer was hard. But cancer has seeped into all of our lives. And unless it hits you personally, you learn to live with it's existence. But let's face it cancer has affected each and every one of us somewhere along the road.
Be nice to finally eradicate it from the planet. Someday.

I love playing with my brother Johnny. Hard to believe we have been playing together since 1971. Call me old school, but I just love that dual guitar sound. Especially when it's our own music.

But hey now The NO'EASTERS wasn't the only band on the Bill. Hell no, local legends Mel and John (with Mike) filled an hour's worth of beautiful covers. Love John's playing and Mel's voice. Great to see and hear them again.

Puddles of Joy alumni Mike and Curt belted out some original tunes and as always they sounded great. Up next was the popular OLD BASTARDS. Great cover band that plays Wally's all the time. I'm sorry to say that I was not there for their set, but I heard it was great. Same with Patrick Hall. All in all, it was a great night for a great cause. I heard they raised some serious money.

Oh then there was this...the mechanical shark.

To say that this scene was not entertaining would be an understatement. There are over 100 photos in the gallery section below. But suffice it to say, this woman may not have beaten the shark, but she sure as hell did put on a show.

Speaking of putting on a show....yours truly is back with just my acoustic and a bag full of true and embarrassing stories. It's a different gig then The NOR'EASTERS per se, but I enjoy myself as
do apparently those who stop by.

"Music and Surfing Heals All Wounds"

"Ed's Corner" pic this week is from May of 2013. The surfer is Kai Nichols. Kai is currently on Oahu spending some serious time and fun times with the ESA All Star Team. Hope he's getting some good waves. Hell, I know he is. Kai's on his way to the top of the heap as he should be. 14 years old and full of energy and talent.

To see more of Ed's pics just hit the archives tab and scroll through the years and see some Ed's work. Be sure to pick up the new SFOD movie The COLD COAST and check out the extra feature of Ed O'Connell's gallery set to music.

Each week I will feature one of Ed's great pics from this blog.

Now for Some Of My Weekly Global Observances

ISIS has captured over 100 Christians in Syria this week including women and children. I don't even want to know what they have planned for them. I guess we can all agree, that whatever it is, it will be horrific and disturbing. But hey, that's just ISIS being ISIS. The civilized world turns a blind eye to this madness each day. We need to stop this evil virus from spreading any further. We need to do it now. WAKE UP WORLD!!!

Live Long and Prosper. Spock has passed on to the other side.

Rest in Peace Leonard Nimoy. The man was a Vulcan.

Who knew that KSM was a "Trekkie"? Can you imagine if KSM got to play one of the main characters on Star Trek? Hey a terrorist can dream can't he?

Please enjoy the weekly humiliation of the mastermind terrorist who killed 3,000 innocent civilians on September 11th, 2001.

A Wave a day for 365 consecutive days.
Yesterday- YESTERDAY Mainland Mexico Early 80's.
(Below) I know I mentioned that some dear friends from California came out to visit me in December of last year. The group included my long time friend Jeff Chamberlain. I first met Jeff in the late 70's. We have been friends ever since. It would not be an understatement to say, that Jeff has had his finger on the pulse of surfing since he first burst on the scene back in the early 70's. His writing, his photography, his surfing, his incredible nautical skills, have kept the fires burning for well over 4 decades now, and has also inspired many of his fellow Central California brethren. And, he has inspired me in many ways. This photo recently caught my eye, because it truly epitomizes what a true soul surfer surf's like. The long drawn out bottom turn, on a tropical wave, is "all " surfing. Thanks for sharing this Jeff, and thank you for all of your insightful contributions to the lifestyle. FEBRUARY 19th, 2015

70 years ago today the Marines landed on Iwo Jima. February 19th, 1945. My uncle was there and my dad was on another Island in the South Pacific. I shot this video today of my son Max and the music is by my nephew Jesse and my brother John is playing the guitar solo. It dawned on me as I stood on that cold beach today, that had my uncle been killed, or my father died over there, none of this video would have happened today. But they survived and as a result this clip is here for all to see. This clip is dedicated to the 6,281 Marines who died on Iwo Jima and to all the men and women who fought in WWII.

God Bless them all.

WINTER STORM NEPTUNE February 15th, 2015

OK the next winter storm on tap was this bad boy. NEPTUNE. He dumped another foot and a half on our sorry asses. The wind was howling like I'd never seen it. White out conditions in the bright sunlight was weird. The surf was marginal but unique due to the cold, snow, and wind. Wes and Max made the best of it out there. The song is ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER Live with myself and my nephew Jesse. Today (2-17-15) is my nephew Jesse's (QWILL) birthday. He is singing back up and playing the acoustic guitar on this song. It's just Jesse and myself playing live at the Legion the summer of 2013. Happy Birthday Jesse I LOVE YOU!

WINTER STORM MARCUS DAY II

Well seeing how winter storm MARCUS was a 4 day swell and each day was significant, I shot more that I typically would shoot. I had posted the first MARCUS clip last week. It was a Black and White clip. My first B&W in many years. This was all shot on February 12th, 2015. It was snowing pretty heavy by the end of the day. What else is new? We've had a crazy winter here in New Hampshire. The surfers are the usual suspects. Weston Rogers, Dave Cropper, Perry Reynolds, Max Fatello, Peter Stokes, Lenny Nichols, Kevin Grondin, and a bunch of others. The music is by Jimi Hendrix. It's short but sweet. I hope you like it.

Thanks

Ralph

Winter Storm MARCUS in Black and White from SFOD/Ralph's Pic Of The Week February 10th, 2015.

My first B&W clip since the 80's. The local boys were tearing it up out there. Weston Rogers, Stevie O'Hara, Max Fatello, Dave Cropper, Kevin Grondin, Phil Carey, Peter Stokes, Casey Lockwood, and Roger Beal. The tune is by LZ and it kicks. Just one more in the winter storm series. Hope you like it.
