Saying Goodbye to Wes Welker, and the Last Gasps
of Saturn, while saying hello to the New Pope.

As the last waves from Winter Storm "Saturn" were unloading on our beaches, reefs, and pointbreaks this past week, something else was developing that sent shock waves throughout New Hampshire and New England.

Much loved wide receiver, number 83, has left the building.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I have been a New England Patriots fan since, well, since it was unpopular to be one. In
other words, I am a hardcore, old school fan. A true loyal fan.
I love the team.

That means I love the players, coaches, owners and fellow fans.

We all have that common thread that runs through all of us. I have no shame in admitting this. I'm a fan dammit. I get emotionally involved with the team. Especially since Tom Brady and Bill Belichick came onto the scene. You kidding? We went from being a laughing stock, punching bag in the NFL to a significant team to be wary of. Other teams feared us.

And they certainly feared this guy. Wes Welker.

Save for two dropped passes in his time spent here in New England (2007 Superbowl and last year's AFC Championship game) Wes has caught more passes than anyone in the history of Patriots football. Besides, the fans loved him. And that needs repeating. The FANS LOVED him.

He was a true Warrior. Good lord, no one, and I mean NO ONE took as many hits as he did and bounced right back up to get back in the game. I will bet anything that Tom Brady is NOT happy about his departure. Are you kidding me? Brady would
NOT have half the success he has had the last 5 years, without Welker's contribution.

Wes could catch just about anything Brady threw at him.

He was a True New England Patriot, and he will be missed by those of us who still have that team loyalty, and New England spirit. I understand that this is a business. Got it. Don't particularly like it, but I get it.

It's just that this image below...well, this is bad business.

Is it me, or does Wes look a bit apprehensive? Like he himself, cannot believe he is there. In Denver. With Peyton Manning. The Denver Broncos? Oh God say it's not so. Please.

All I know is this. Wes Welker is now a player that we will fear.

Next Saturday is the benefit for Rick Sav. Keep in mind, if you can't make it to the fundraiser and you want to donate to Rick's cause, you can do so by mailing checks to Rick's sister Barbara. Just click on the poster to see where and how.

Rick's family and his friends are truly humbled by the response to his plight. If you want to help it would be greatly appreciated.

Click on the poster above to see a larger version. And we hope that as a community we can make a difference in another friend, surfer, brother's life. Hope to See you all on the 23rd of March.

This is a low res and much smaller image of the awesome print by Lenny Nichols that he will be raffling off at Rick's Benefit at the Legion on Saturday March 23, 2013.

Title "Kai says", Dad, there's gotta be big bass in there"!
Click on the image to see a larger version. The night will also feature a handful of local musicians and artists. There will be food and drink and we are asking everyone who attends to make a donation. Whatever you can afford will be greatly appreciated by Rick's family and friends. Thank you.

Goodbye Saturn...that was one hell of a run. Tell your fellow storms to get their butts up the coast and spawn some more week long head high surf!

Now for Some Of My Weekly Global Observances:

After days of black smoke...the white smoke has appeared at the Vatican and we have ourselves a New Pope. Pope Francis the 1st emerged on the balcony on Wednesday and waved to his loving and adoring fans.

Pope Francis is from Argentina. And the people in Argentina are going crazy. Apparently 4 out of 5 Argentines are Catholic. It's still too early to say what kind of impact the Pope will have on today's youth, but one thing is for sure, he has his work cut out for him. Good thing his boss is a loving and caring individual.

I wonder if Dennis Rodman will be visiting him anytime soon?

Meanwhile down in GITMO Khalid Sheik Mohummed (KSM) and his
band of fellow scumbag terrorists have been celebrating St Patricks
Day. Though by the looks of things, KSM appears to once again be in a miserable mood. I mean come on Khaliddy if you can't be happy on this day, what day can you celebrate? Goat Shaving Day?

*Note to self: Must pick up some green stuff at Home Depot!

We highly recommend the various businesses and
artists listed below. Why? Well simply put, each and every one of them is a Surfer, who lives the Surfing Lifestyle, and their business is a reflection of that
lifestyle that we all love.

Yesterday- MACS Surf Shop Rye NH 1969.
(Below) Long before there was a Cinnamon Rainbows, Pioneers, Zapstix and Summer Sessions Surf shops...there was this little Surf Shack in Rye, NH. This pic was sent in by Martha Lardent. Here's what she wrote.
"Here is a picture of my brother's shop taken in 1969. My parents owned the
property at 2170 which was located at the corner of Ocean Blvd. and Cable Rd.
Extension in Rye. My brother Allan and cousin Mark MacGregor ran it together
hence the Macs' not Mac's, being run by two MacGregors. They shaped a few
boards which is what the Cable Road Extension surfboards sign is advertising.
I don't think they did too much business for when the surf was up they were
out on the break instead of manning the shop!
It was more of a hang-out where one could hear conversations like, "Dude, you
should have seen it yesterday" over the strains of Blind Faith and Jethro Tull.

(Above) This is the best surfer in our family. Mackey V has way more talent out in the water than I ever dreamed about having. I'm so stoked that he has a penchant for getting inside the wave. To me there is no more a timeless move than getting barreled.
Call me old fashion but I think we can all agree on that. March 13, 2013.

Late 80's Early 90's PART II

Published on Mar 15, 2013

This is the second part to my earlier clip of the same title and time frame. The footage was shot with my super 8mm movie camera of some of the local NH surfers in the late 80's and early 90's. The surfing is colorful, as in green water, and the wetsuits were very loud and offensive. *This is why I always wore black.

And like the other clip, the soundtrack is from my earlier band. The VINNY Band. The song is called "HiJacker" and I wrote this in December of 1979 and recorded it in 1980.

David Robinson produced this record and Thom Moore engineered.
It is available on the Olas De Sexo CD on GAFmusic.
