Have We Finally Hit The Summer Flat Spells?

Summer...sometimes we love it, and other times? Eh. The dreaded summer flat spells are upon us. Oh what to do? Well, aside from taking up Golf (which I will never, ever do), there is music. Playing music, or going to see music. Or rather, seeing and hearing music. And that's what we did this week. We all went to see "Mike Girard's Big Swinging Thing" at the Blue Ocean club.

And ironically, the club was situated on the ocean. I'm talking directly on the ocean. And not just on the ocean, but on the ocean that has waves. And maybe because I was having such a good time listening and watching this great band, I almost thought I saw a wave or two. My wife claims she did.

But honestly, this band was so good, surfing was the last thing I was thinking about. We were all too busy grooving on the songs that poured out of this amazing band. A 20 piece band complete with a brass section. Plus these two beauties, " The Jewels". I'm telling you, this band kicked it big time.
I'm going to write a review on the show, but in the meantime, you can see about 50 pics I shot down in the photo gallery section of the Blog.

The other day I watched my son Max ride my old Black Vinny board that I first rode in 79 and 80. Of course, I never put it through the paces that my son does, but I did have some magical rides on that board.

This is me in 1980 up north in Nova Scotia. I'm surfing a break that has never been surfed before. This is a video frame grab from an old Super 8mm film. But it's the same board that Max rides today. I wish I was still in the shape that I was in back then. But let's face it, that was 37 years ago. I was 29 years old in this photo. Do the math. I'm lucky I'm still alive let alone be in that shape.

Here's another board that was mine that Max rides today. My old Camo board. I got this board in 1983. This is another video frame grab from another super 8mm film. My then girlfriend, Cory shot this in 1984. It's at a local spot.

Again, I never rode it the way he does. But I did get some good waves on that board. I don't believe I could ride either of those boards today. Not that I would want to, I have better boards that are suited for me these days. Big soft tops with hand rails, along with rear-view mirrors, and alarms that go off when I get going too fast. One even has a parachute. I kid. But honestly? I'm not that far off from something like that.

This is my CALL FOR SURF ART. The 13th Annual Surf Art Blog.
ANYONE who has any kind of Art (drawings, paintings, sculptures, carvings etc etc) relating to the ocean and surfing should send me their art. And by send, I mean via email, Facebook, or any of the other digital avenues. Just send them to me by July 27th!

It's not a contest. It's just an appreciation for surf art. This year we are dedicating the Surf Art Blog to the late John Severson. If you're not a surfer, just Google him. But you surfers know who he is. He started SURFER magazine. He was a filmmaker as well as an artist.

He is without question, the ICON of modern day surfing.

So I made a short trailer for this movie. It's down in the movie section. I plan on making the final edit about 30-45 minutes long. It will definitely be under an hour. It's going to be available on DVD in the local surf shops. Or you can order from the Surf Free Or Die site once it's done and packaged up for distribution.

It's looking like a late summer (mid September) release date.

|

While you're all waiting for the GRANITE GIRLS Movie to be released go and check out this flick. It's really good. Trust me, it's not what you think. We all loved it. And look, I'm not a Super Heroes type of person. I have not seen anything outside of a few Batman's and a Superman. Nothing else. But this? This is really done well. Besides, when have I ever led you astray? That's the spirit bunky! Go see this movie. WONDER WOMAN!

Now for Some More Of My Weekly Global Observances
This week on TRUMP TV The Donald's son Donald Jr found himself in some pretty hot water. I mean anytime you get your mug plastered all over the media you know you are in a serious shit storm.

Take for instance, the cover of TIME magazine. Not good.

Now it's no secret that I am not a fan of his father, but this kid just happened to walk into the political arena along with other members of his family, and let's face it, they are in over their heads. I don't think this kid had any ill intentions during that meeting. I believe he was unaware of the consequences of his actions.

That doesn't mean I don't think he did anything wrong. It just means that I don't think he knew that what he was doing was morally wrong.
Of course he knows now. But at the time? They were trying to win the race by any means.

I don't think that TIME is considered Fake News. Just saying.

But this? This my friends IS FAKE NEWS. He had this hanging in his country clubs all over the world. Hey 45, this is Fake News.

KSM Photoshop of the Week

So once again, our boy KSM somehow ended up in a cameo on the NEW Game Of Thrones. He plays a villain. Surprise huh? Don't be.
He's a natural villain. I hope they air the shot with him. But if they don't, Ole Khaliddy will always have this unique moment to remember.

So my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed).

*Note to self -must pick up a case of Dragon Food at Home Depot
this week.

My CATCH A WAVE FOR MOLLY. (Click On the Banner below
on this page.) Started on July 26, 2010 ENDED July 26, 2011.
A Wave a day for 365 consecutive days.
Yesterday- The Never Aging Empty Wave 1986.
(Below) I can tell you without blinking an eye, that it is virtually impossible to look at an empty wave and tell how old the photo or the wave is for that matter.
I mean boards and fashion change all the time. But the ocean and her waves? They stay pretty true for hundreds of thousands of years. I shot this in 1986. But clearly, this could have been last week for all you know.

SURFING WITH SMILES June 2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo

The first of three "Surfing With Smiles" this Summer of 2017. Thanks to Cinnamon Rainbows, and all the Volunteers. You guys Rock! Hard not to smile, watching these kids with Autism riding waves. Another example of what surfing can do for your soul. *Special Thanks to my little assistant "Bennett" who actually shot one of the rides. He was pretty stoked about my cameras. and wanted so badly to try one. So I set him up for one shot. He was more steady than I was. I told him and his mother, "I'm gonna have to give him credit on the edit." Prepare to be stoked my friends. Prepare to be stoked.

GRANITE GIRLS and The RIVER WOMEN
from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo. This is the trailer for the new Surf Free Or Die and Ralph's Pic movie about the women surfers of the Northeast.
We're looking at a late summer release. It's been fun working with these talented women. The movie itself will be around 30 minutes long.
Hope you like it.

JUNEASTER June 7-8-2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

The welcomed Nor'easter we got on June 6th, 2017 that gave us 3 solid days of waves. All the points, reefs, and beaches were firing. I shot from NH to ME. And while the overall conditions were not exactly ideal, the vibe in and out of the water was filled with laughter. Why do surfers have to be so cruel to one another, especially when watching your buds get smoked out in the water? I don't know, but it's always been that way. We hoot when someone gets a good wave, and we howl when someone eats shit. Ha...I'm smiling now just writing this.

This web edit is a first for me. The shooting was shared with Kyle Linseman's cool Drone footage. I can foresee a partnership working with Kyle. He's stoked about shooting the action. And make no mistake about it, Kyle can rip. So for him to sacrifice his own surf time to shoot, speaks volumes of his new found passion. The music is by Meshell Ndegeocello and John Digwood. I'm stoked about this one. Hope you will be too.

MOTHER'S DAY SWELL May 14-15-16-2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo. This is the web edit for the 3 Day Mother's Day Swell. It never really got bigger than head high. And it rained the first two days. Still, it was surf, and beggars can't be choosers now can we. I did the edit today after hearing about the death Chris Cornell, lead singer for Soundgarden. He had a great voice. It's ironic because I was looking for the right song to go with this edit. And I believe I found it with Black Hole Sun. The surfers that I can remember are: Kai Nichols, Tom Hay, Andy Elliott, Mikey Moran, Skip Brunette, Erik Zak, Kody Grondin, Chris Stelman, Max Fatello, Mikey Evans, and a handful I couldn't ID. This is for all the mothers. past, present, and future. And it's in memory of Chris Cornell.
