January 4th, 2009

So the other day, I'm sitting with a friend, and we're both watching my latest movie, GrooveMasters. We are both chuckling at this one "character" who stumbles by me as I'm shooting. My buddy looks over at me and asks.

"Did he just give you the finger?"

"Yep." I answered. The "He" who he was referring to, was the guy walking by me at the Wall as I was filming. He clearly flips me the bird as he walks past me. I guess I need to back up a bit here for you.

It was a hot Summer day at the Wall.

The waves were fun, and the crowds were thick. Both in the water and out. And like most Hot Summer Crowded days at the Wall, there are plenty of characters walking by. I was shooting the action when I spotted this guy walking towards me. He stood out from the crowd because of what he was wearing. He had a "Shortie" on (No sleeves or legs) but he also was donning strange looking "skull cap" hood, and he had thick 5mil gloves on, and...he was wearing booties.

Plus, he was carrying a Longboard with his leash attached.

And he was walking down along the sidewalk. Not on the beach, but actually up on the cement. He was catching small children and other beach crafts, with his long, dangling leash. But it was his wetsuit ensemble, that originally caught my eye. And I did, what I would of done, if he was wearing yellow ballerina outfit. I turned my GL-1 Camcorder on him and pulled the trigger. Both barrels.

He did one of those, subtle ' flip me the bird ' gestures, by pretending to rub his forehead. The middle finger was pretty evident. I could see he was not happy with what I was doing. So, I yelled over to him as he walked past me. "Come on man...you're in the public eye. You can't walk by me looking like that, and expect me not to shoot."

No one else noticed it as I shot, or at least, no one said anything to me about it. Maybe they didn't want to be videotaped and thought it better to keep quiet. But the whole incident got me thinking, and quite frankly, this was not the first time I've encountered some undesirable beach patrons who got upset with my roving eye. So I guess, I need to point out some simple public photography facts.

If you're outdoors, and in the public eye, you are fair game.

In other words, I can shoot anything and anyone, if you are in the public eye. If you are indoors, say in your home for instance, or at a place of business, I can not. But because you are outside, I can shoot. I've been shooting these beach scenes for years, and I've captured some really good stuff while doing it. Like the above mentioned dude.

I call it the Paparazzi Rule.

Those Paparazzis are able to shoot those unwilling celebrities because of this law. The famous may not like it, but there's nothing they can do about it. Call it the price of fame and fortune. And really, it's a small price to pay. I'm not saying that the Paparazzi is an honorable occupation. I'm sure it's a hard life. But you have to understand that what they do is legal. Same with me shooting the unusual on the beach. It's fair game.

In fact, there was a time when I called myself Vince Paparazzi That was another of the dozen or so nicknames I've had over the years. Vince Paparazzi. It sort of rolls off the tongue. Don't you think?

So if you walk by me, on a hot summer day, while I'm shooting the surf action, and you're looking like you just fell off the turnip truck, dressed in a wacked out ensemble...I am pulling the trigger. I am pulling the trigger as sure as the day is long. I have to. It's my job. I have to shoot the bizarre characters as much as I have to shoot the surf action. It's all fair and legal. And quite a bit of fun for me.

There's a few other scenes in my two new movies that are borderline Paparazzi. On one particular hot summer day, an older gentleman went jogging by me, with no shirt on, wearing these loud Hawaiian print trunks, with high black socks, and black shoes. He had a ' Larry Fine' looking head, straight out of the "Three Stooges". I mean, I had to wheel and fire on him.

There's another guy doing push-ups on the Wall. Another scene with a guy so jacked up and tanned, that he looked bigger than life. He was a good sport though. Even though he probably could of killed me, he was good about me shooting him.

Then there was the brother from up North, who had his trunks on over his wetsuit. He was very good about me shooting him, and he actually spoke to me about it. I think he realized that I was going to shoot his ' strange trip' regardless, so he went along with me.

The bottom line is, if you see me on the beach and I have my camera, and you happen to see someone or something of interest, do us all a favor, and point it out to me.

Just be discreet about it. Thank you. Vince Paparazzi

Today, is the last day, we will put on our Christmas lights...I'm sorry, I mean Holiday Lights. There's no real Emily Post rule, to say how long you display the festive, multi colored lights, that I'm aware of. To me, it's the weekend of New Years. I know some folks go to the "Little Christmas" or whatever it is they call it. But for us, it's this last weekend. The tree comes down. The lights come off the house. It's over.

When the kids were young, we used to drive around the seacoast, and see some homes with Christmas lights, that were well into the end of January and February. We would roll down our windows and yell "Let it go!"

That's just the lights though. I think it's cool and acceptable, to keep Wreaths up during this time. Or at least, I was told that it's OK. I found that out years ago, when I took a wreath off my front door, that an old landlord had put up. It was well after the major Holidays, and I thought, 'OK it's over, time to take it down.' Turns out, it was not. At least for this particular person. I was told, that the Holiday Wreaths, can stay up past the designated time frame. If anyone knows anything to the contrary, please let me know. And I'll spread the word.

My movie "Groovemasters" soundtrack is really growing on me. My nephew Jesse C who is going by the cool name of 'QWILL' is all over the music bed. There's something about his music, that really lends a creative hand to Longboarding. Maybe it's the fact, that he is so soulful to begin with, or maybe, it's the simple fact, that he is one of us. Or both of us. He rides both shortboards and longboards. In either case, his music works so well with GrooveMasters as does Dave Cropper's song April Morning. All in all, both of these movies are a local production in every sense of the word.

Now for some casual observances from last week.

Israel has started the ground war against HAMAS . This is going to get uglier before it gets better. There are no logical solutions to this mess. One thing's for sure, Hamas had to have known, that firing rockets into Israel for the last 3-4 weeks, was going to result in something bad happening. It's like sticking your finger in a Yellowjacket's nest. You know those Yellowjackets are gonna come out and sting your ass. Hamas just got stung. And they are being stung as I write this. But beware...IRAN is watching all of this very carefully.

President elect Obama has his hands full.

He's going to need all of our support. He's got mine. The world is a dangerous place. There's hard times acoming. There will be more wars, and more despair, before things get better. We need to buckle up and support our President and our country. This is no joke. Stand up and unite. Don't go Bush hating on the new guy, and the new administration. Look forward to 2010, or beyond, before things get better. Meanwhile, tighten your seatbelt.

OK I admit it. I'm upset that our New England Patriots did not make the Play-Offs. They were (are) clearly better than most of the teams that did. Look at what happened. The COLTS lost. The DOLPHINS lost. Things are not right in Patriots Nation. 11-5 and we sit at home. Albeit, it might have only been just one more game and we too would be sitting home, like Miami and Indy. But then again, maybe not. I guess we'll never know now.

And, we might lose even more if Pioli and McDaniels are gone next year. The horror. The horror. The horror.

Still, having said all of this, I'm enjoying watching the NFL. That Colts / Chargers game was as exciting a game as I've ever seen. So much for the Brother vs Brother Superbowl. Peyton is out. Will Eli join the Manning family and watch the Big game at home on their large screen HD Tv? Or will he go forward and be one of the last two teams standing?
Who the hell knows?

The poor DOLPHINS let one get away. QB Chad Pennington's 4 interceptions and one fumble sealed the deal for the RAVENS. And the young Falcon's QB from BC, Matt Ryan's Play-Off debut ended just six points away from advancing. The NFL..which stands for Not For Long is taking it's toll.
Go Celtics and Bruins!
