Goodbye 2015. Hello 2016.

The passing of another year. I have mixed feelings about 2015. On the local level, we had some great surf. Consistent as it gets. Last winter the weather was awful. Unless you like that kind of stuff. And I know a few of you who do. But for the rest of us, it was tough going. Then we had an incredible run of nice weather through the Fall and right up until a few days after Christmas. Then winter showed up.

It was also a bittersweet year for those of us who lost loved ones.

There was Steve McCarthy from the McCarthy family, and my own family saw the passing of our kid sister Evamarie. And keeping with the cycle of life, we were blessed with another grandchild. Having babies does not make up for the vacant seat at the dinner table on Thanksgiving and Christmas, but it does help.

The dealing with reality, and holding onto your faith, can go a long way to ease that loss. And the babies running around the house, bring nothing but laughter and joy. I am fast becoming used to being a grandfather. When your grandchild smiles at you, and reaches out to you to have you pick them up,well that's feeling I wouldn't trade for all the money in the world. I don't know many who would.

So on a personal level, I'm looking forward to 2016.

I hope to get back in the water in the spring, and to get back in shape.
That's the plan any way. Hard to predict what will happen in 2016, but I'm glad to see 2015 go. So here's wishing you all a Happy and Healthy New Year!

There was some extra crazy shit that happened in 2015.
Some worth mentioning, others not so much.

How could I not mention the BEST Superbowl win of all time? The game was lost for New England
when Pete Carroll calls the biggest, perhaps the dumbest ever, play of all time. It was like a miracle. Some kind of bug wormed it's way into Carroll's head and made him call this play. Whenever Butler picked off the pass to save the team. All of America (save Patriots fans) stared in disbelief and shock. That call resulted in the New England Patriots winning their 4th Superbowl. Could they do it again? Sure. But I'm not going there just yet. And neither should you.

When ISIS burst on the scene last year no one was more hated than this scumbag. Jihadi John. He stood before the rolling video cameras cursing America and president Obama. Then he would behead the American who was being held captive. With that English accent, he would without any
hesitation, cut off the heads of the men kneeling down in those orange jump suits, while continuing to spout all kinds of madness, and bullshit.

Well, if you're like me, you stopped whatever you were doing last month when you heard that we got him with a perfectly designed Drone Strike. He's dead. Gone. I wish they had the technology to tape and record that last final millisecond of this piece of shit's life. I would like to think, that he knew, in that final moment. He knew. Ha. Sorry, that makes me chuckle.

Speaking of chuckling, the local Hampton crew got more than their share of chuckles when local surfer comic celebrity Jimmy Dunn starred in the sitcom the McCarthys. The sitcom was based out of Boston, and the accents and mannerisms were spot on. It was a funny show. My favorite character was the mother. She was freaking hilarious.

We're all hoping that some other network picks it up.

Then there were the uneasy chuckles of comparing aging starlet Jessica Lange to newly built Caitlyn Jenner. I personally felt uneasy, because I had a crush on Jessica, when she was in the first remake of King Kong in 1976. Seeing her now, and in this comparison? Well, spoiler alert. We are all going to get old. Wrinkles, baldness (for both men and women) and flesh just drooping and
hanging like some wet towel. That's ok. It is what it is.

As they say, It's Life. Suck it up and deal with it.

We couldn't get through the year without mentioning this piece of human waste. Private Bergdahl walked off his post on a mountain in Afghanistan.
The result of which led to the death of six American
soldiers who died while searching for him. And if that wasn't bad enough, Obama traded five of the worse known Terrorist leaders, with the Taliban to get this as swipe coward back home to his hippie parents. Disgusting? Oh hell yea it was.

Pleasant looking gentlemen
don't you think? Nice work Barack.

"Ed's Corner" pic this week is another shot from the winter of 2009.This week's pic is a super hollow peak that we always loved shooting together. It's funny, once Ed knew that I had a penchant for empty waves, it was a weekly battle for us to get the best empty wave shot.

Pretty sure he won on this particular week.

To see more of Ed's pics just hit the archives tab and scroll through the years and see some of Ed's work. It's worth the trip down memory lane.
Be sure to pick up the SFOD movie The COLD COAST
and check out the extra feature of Ed O'Connell's gallery.

Each week I will feature one of Ed's great pics from this blog.

Now for Some More Of My Weekly Global Observances

Am I the only one who can't believe what is happening to our country when buffoons like this man are leading the polls as quite possibly becoming the NEXT president of the United States? This is like some SNL bit.

Are you kidding me people?

"MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN" Who wrote that slogan? Vince Lombardi? Seriously, what marketing genius put that down on paper? And then turn around and make the ugliest trucker hats on the planet. The only one wearing them is
The DONNIE himself.

Clearly he is suffering from Affluenza.

Just the most absurd and ridiculous political race we have ever been witness to. And yes, I'm including all of us. After all, we will all suffer from this, if it comes true. Start praying people, start praying.

God help us all if he gets the nod and the job.

Yes I had fun doing this. Old Cos is finally going to face the music. I'm sure he would like this all to go away. I'm sure he would want to make America funny again. But there's nothing funny about this Mr Huxtable. Nothing. The shit is going down and so are you.

Think the Cos will take the stand? Is this something he
might say? I swear you can't make this shit up.

Pretty freaking sad for the victims.

KSM Photoshop of the Week

What some people don't know is, Cos may be going to GITMO if convicted. This is a scene from The Cos and KSM talking about getting some good pills and heading over to the women's cell block. KSM has an in with the Al Qeada bitches. And Cos can hardly believe his ears.

Please my friends, enjoy the weekly humiliation of the master mind behind the September 11th, 2001 attacks. The man who was behind the killing of 3,000 innocent civilians. The number two big dog of Al Qeada. Khalid Sheik Mohammed.

* Note to self, must pick up a case of Viagra at Home Depot.

HAPPY and HEALTHY NEW YEAR!

Please send positive thoughts to Mike Keefe to your list. Mike's a local surfer who has been surfing these parts for decades. Also say a prayer for my good friend Robert Gerard. And please continue to pray for local Hampton surfers Terry Morrison and Rick Fiorentini and their families.
*I'm adding a close dear friend of mine. Marine SSGT George Masten. A combat Marine who served in Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded the purple heart for wounds received in Vietnam in 1967. George is battling cancer. PLEASE say a prayer for him.

Please Support ALL The photographers who contribute to Ralph's Pic Of The Week every week for the last 9 years. **Think about BUYING a HIGH RES Photo from any of the weeks on RPOTW.

(Below) I love getting pics like this out of the blue. I can ask for old pics until I'm blue in the face and never get any, and then without warning, BAM a pic like this falls onto the pages of Facebook. This is the JT that I knew in the early years. He's goofing with that pose, but I'll tell you without any hesitation, JT could hurt you. Just his size alone could frighten you. And with a razor sharp wit, he would verbally kill you. We all miss him. Until we meet again old friend, rest easy. Photo courtesy of Rick Hosely

) The fog that morning was pretty thick. And it goes without saying the shooting process is difficult at best. When this gull stole a clam from two juveniles, and started screeching his head off to keep them away from his clam, I was thinking, this might be the only shot I'll get today. It wasn't.

We welcome all Surf Related pics from our Readers. Just make sure they are at least 900 pixels wide. If you have any OLD photos of local New England surfers and or of local New England surfing, we would love to see them and share them with our readers.

We can scan them for you. And we get them back to you undamaged. Trust me. We can do this...people love the older stuff. So if you have any, please send 'em along. If you have prints/slides we can scan them for you.

And we don't care if you shoot pics with with your cellphones. I mean it. Most of the images you see on the news and on the Internet were shot with them Smart Ass Phones. So shoot and ask questions later.

Christmas Morning 12-25-15 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.
The novelty of any surfer getting to surf on Christmas day is alive and well. If you live in Northern New England, chances are you are facing cold weather by Christmas. You know, snow on the ground, temps in the teens, that kind of cold. Well, this Christmas was a bit different. The water temps were tolerable, and the air temp was ridiculous. 68 degrees. Say what? It's true. It was balmy and sunny. So for a handful of local surfers, this was a chance to surf on Christmas Day. They had already surfed on Christmas Eve the day before, though it was misty and foggy. There are three waves from Christmas Eve on this clip. The surfers include: Kody Grondin, Max Moody, DJ Sparks, Max Fatello, Matt Evans, and a few unknowns.

The music is by my favorite surf band The VENTURES and the song is "Sleigh Ride". Check it out, it's under 3 minutes.

"View From A Blue Moon" Trailer from John John Florence on Vimeo.

See the sport of surfing as it’s never been captured before in John Florence and Blake Vincent Kueny’s second signature release, in association with award-winning film studio, Brain Farm. The first surf film shot entirely in 4K, View From a Blue Moon follows the world’s most dynamic surfer John Florence and his closest friends from his home on the North Shore of Oahu to his favorite surfing destinations around the globe. From the dreamy blue perfection of the South Pacific to the darkest uncharted waters of Africa (and everywhere in between), Florence faces a broad spectrum of emotions as he continues to seal his legacy as one of the most gifted surfers ever. And while the young Hawaiian is pulled in increasingly different directions, there is no form of pressure that will keep him from his ultimate goal — to redefine what is possible in the ocean.

MATTERAS Thanksgiving Week 2015 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

The week of Thanksgiving 2015 was one of those swells that kept "giving back" to all the local surfers. The color of the water on the last day, and the amazing pinkish purple skies on the 20th, were just beautiful. I'm very impressed at the way the young men and women have been surfing as of late. I've been around the block
a few times and think I have a handle on the who, what, and where around these parts. My only regret for this clip is I didn't shoot from the water. But then again, I am nursing a few broken bones. But I'll get back out there.

Especially if I get to the West Coast and the tropics this winter. Until then, I'll be shooting down the street. Music is by Buckethead buckethead.com
and Jimi Hendrix jimihendrix.com
