And The Wind Began To Howl...

It occurred to me the other day, during that insane windstorm of just how dependent we have all become on modern technology.
There I was, working as fast as I could on my computer trying to size photos, and drop them into galleries as the lights flickered.

I kept hitting SAVE. I learned that lesson years ago. Save and save often. I looked outside and watched the trees bend, and the sound of the wind hitting my office windows was deafening. The lights kept blinking. I knew it was only a matter of time.

Then it happened. That snapping sound. No power. Oh no!

I sat there and stared at my computer as the sound of the power leaving it's body slipped away. Then silence. Except for the wind outside. I checked all my devices and they were all down. I did have cell service so I was not completely devoid of human contact. And then I did something that gave me hope.

I laughed out loud at the absurdity of my situation.

Who cares if we have no power? Are we that tied in to our devices that we can't adjust to a temporary power outage? I thought back to my early childhood and how we would spend days without power. I thought about my time in the Marine Corps in the infantry, out in the jungles and mountains of Southeast Asia with no power.

The more I reflected, the more I laughed. Then I did what any surf photographer would do. I grabbed my camera and went out into the wind looking for more images to shoot and to document.

And I was not alone. My good friend Ed O'Connell was out too.

It is impossible to shoot the wind. The wind is transparent. You can however shoot the effect the wind has on solid and liquid objects. Like this photo that Ed shot. This is wind. It was gusting out there at almost 60 knots.

People were out surfing. My son Max was one of them along with a handful of others. Like Perry Reynolds, Mike Stanek, Kenny Linseman, Jon Kiskinis among others. If you have ever surfed in conditions like this, you know how difficult it is to see, let alone catch a wave and surf. It is blinding. Like having a fire hose in your face. Stinging and blinding. Suffocating.

Almost like waterboarding. In fact, they may want to take terrorists out in the ocean the next time it's blowing this hard. Bet they'd get all kinds of information.

Speaking of surfing. Yesterday in Rye, the deliberative session concerning Article 15 (surfing ordinances) came up before the town officials and I am happy to report that everything turned out well for both the town and the surf community.

Thanks to Summer Sessions Ryan and Ty McGill, NH Surf Rider, and Cinnamon Rainbows. Here's a letter that Dave Cropper posted on his Facebook page.

"Thank you to everyone who came out today in support of the Amendments to Article 15. I was very proud to be able to speak and to be a part of the deliberation process. Witnessing the Rye Selectmen, town citizens and concerned citizens of surrounding communities speak so poignantly about their concerns and reach a resolution was humbling. The end result was the acceptance of the "McGill Amendment", which was unanimously voted into effect! Going forward, there will be infrastructure and communication in place which will ensure that everyone is able to safely enjoy the town beaches of Rye.

After watching the democratic process unfold today, I couldn't help but think that THIS is the way government and politics are supposed to work; voices being heard, information being shared and concerned, responsible members of communities spanning many generations, working together to make educated decisions. It was truly a patriotic moment for me.

Thank you to the Rye Board of Selectmen, The McGill Brothers of Summer Sessions Surf Shop, The Citizens of Rye, NH Surfrider Foundation and the local surfing community on a job well done!

Now for Some Of My Weekly Global Observances:

So who do you like today? I personally want the Forty Niners. And I
think the fact that this is the first time with two brothers as Head Coach squaring off against each other is a great sub- plot to this game. Hope there's some decent commercials. Don't really care to watch Beyonce.

This is GUN CONTROL. Not exactly perfect form, but he has decent control of his weapon. Shooting a shotgun is mostly pointing not actually aiming per se. But I think the President has good "gun control". I would love to see a photo of his VP with a gun. That would be amusing.

I saw the movie ZERO DARK THIRTY last week. There were many mentions of this bonehead below. Funny seeing his mug with a big CAPTURED written across it. The movie was very well done and the reality of what most Americans are not aware of was clear.

The CIA and the brave men and women who work within the ranks of this coveted intelligence agency, are the TRUE heroes of our nation and indeed the world. You will walk away from that movie with a deeper understanding of the sacrifices these unsung heroes do for us each and every single day.

KSM in some strange dream sequence. Dreaming of simpler times. Before 9-11 and hooking up with OBL...times when the smell of camel shit filled the tent. Oh to go back in time. But this is not to be.

KSM- you murderous terrorist scumbag- you will never ride a camel again in your lifetime. Unless they ship a camel to GITMO. But then again, you will only be allowed to clean up the camel dung. That is what your life has become. Dream away Khalid...keep dreaming.

*Note to self: Must pick up a bag of sand to throw on ice at Home Depot!

We highly recommend the various businesses and
artists listed below. Why? Well simply put, each and every one of them is a Surfer, who lives the Surfing Lifestyle, and their business is a reflection of that
lifestyle that we all love.

Yesterday- Sam George somewhere in Tortola 1979.
(Below) At the time I met Sam George in January of 1979, he was in my honest opinion, one of the best surfers in the world. Next to the local stars back home (Grondin, Smith, Hammer, etc etc) Sam was a hot young contemporary surfer who blew us away. But he was also more than that. He had a vision. He had passion. He was an ambassador to our lifestyle even at that early age. Sam went on to become editor at SURFING, and then SURFER, and has been involved in many projects such as RIDING GIANTS where his incredible enthusiasm spills out all over the big screen. Sam is still an avid surfer today and you can see him ripping on a variety of water crafts from last week's Central Cal sessions with our good friend the Phantom.

North of America 1980 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

In the summer of 1980, three friends from New England went on
a surf trip North of America. Me, Larry Crateau, and Bruz Bowden. We had all been there many times before. In fact, our first surf
trip there was in 1971...we had called this place the Last Frontier. And it was.

I shot this on my old GAF super 8mm movie camera.

It is a land of many perfect points, reefs and beach breaks.
We kept it a secret for years... but like all surf destinations
the word got out. It is not a secret anymore.

These waves you are about to see, were surfed for the very
first time. These are virgin rides. I am riding my old BLACK
VINNY board, the same one my son Max rides today.
Retro swallow fish tail. 6'2"

That board is 30 years old.

The music is by my super talented nephew QWILL from his
latest CD release. The title of his CD is:The Past Must Present. Ironic huh...?

Hope you dig it...

Ralph
