Goodbye July, you were the saddest month.
Hello August, I hope you treat us better then
your sister.

I don't know about you guys, but I was glad to see July in my rear view mirror this week. I said goodbye to some very dear close friends and loved ones in July. Some forever. Some remain uncertain.

Regardless, it was a month of sorrow and pain. And I am glad the month is behind me. I am hoping for a better month ahead for all of
us. Lord knows we could use it.

But first, we must deal with yet another passing.

Three days after the Paddle for JT, a third surfer from Rye passed away. Allan W. MacGregor age 62 passed on July 21st, 2014. For the record, that's three surfers from Rye, NH who passed in July.
Ed O'Connell, John "JT" Taylor, and Allan MacGregor.

Allan MacGregor was a surfer. He was a partner in the first ever surf shop in Rye, NH "MAC'S SURF SHOP" in 1969. He and his cousin Mark MacGregor had that shop and served the Rye guys during that short time period. A regular foot with a stylish flair, he was loved and respected by all who knew him.

I was not close to Allan. I did see him surf and did share waves with him over the years. I knew his cousin Mark better. In fact, I just saw Mark at JT's paddle on the 19th of July. And it was Mark who told me the news about Allan. It's hard to think of surfers passing away.
Even if they had become ill in the latter part of their lives, it's still hard to think that he will never surf again. At least not on this planet.

I like to think that there is another ocean waiting for us all.

Hopefully he is now with two other Rye surfers who have left us before their time. Dwight Hamsley and Todd Ross. Doug Hamsley told me how instrumental Allan was when his brother Dwight came home from Hawaii after suffering a major injury that left him paralyzed. "Allan took care of Dwight every single day. He cooked for him, and was just a wonderful caretaker for my brother."

This is Dwight Hamsley and Joey Lavoie enjoying another great meal that Allan prepared. Allan lived with the Hamsleys for quite some time. Always giving. Always helping. He was a brother to the Hamsleys.

The Rye boys in Florida circa 1970's. That's Doug with the Flame board throwing out the Shaka, next to Doug is Allan pointing the blue board, and on the far right in trunks holding the orange board, is the late Todd Ross.*You can see all of these images and more in the gallery I have posted for Allan further down on this week's blog.
These classic images of surfers past and present are like gems to the family of those surfers who have left us.

Allan's sister Martha (MacGregor) Lardent knows that only to well.

Martha was just saying to herself while shooting JT's paddle "Someday I would like to do a paddle for my brother Allan." She told me on the phone the other day, "Little did I know, it would be 3 days after JT's paddle that Allan passed."

They even named a break after Allan. They called it "Al's Peak".
I hope he's there right now. Surfing with Todd Ross, Dwight Hamsley, and JT. And Ed O'Connell is on the beach taking photos. Sounds like heaven to me.

Rest in Peace Allan. Your suffering is over.

Please join the Rye Surfers and family and friends of Allan on August 17th, 2014 at 6:00PM at STRAWS Point in Rye for a Memorial Surfer's Paddle.

Last week I wrote about my 50th year surfing. I started surfing in 1964. I wanted to catch a wave at dawn with the sun coming up, but it was overcast. But I still managed to get out around 7:30AM and catch a wave in just my trunks and rash guard. The only other surfer I knew was Bryan Johnson. Somehow he knew what the day was and we shared a few waves.

Before I paddled out. I'm holding the GoPro. I actually dropped it on my very first wave. But I learned a new technique on how to hold the camera while paddling. Though I may lose a few teeth in the process, I think I have it down. So it was worth it.

This is my 50th Year Surfing Ride. Cory took the photos. And for the record. Cory has been shooting surfers since 1984. That's 30 years .It felt good to surf again. I like that it was so intimate out there. No crowds. No noise. Just me and a friend surfing. Just like I did 50 years ago this summer.

Afterwards we had a small party at the house. Just my immediate family. It was nice and peaceful. Like life should be at this stage.

"Ed's Corner" pic this week is another of my personal favorite's.
This is some unknown heading out at the Wall at sunrise. The reflection of the sun in the water and the full suited surfer is evident that this is winter. And winter was one of Ed's favorite times of the year. Thanks Ed for sharing this beautiful image.
Each week I will feature one of Ed's great pics from this blog.

Mark it down on your calendars.

My latest movie is due for a late August showing. And I think I'll end up showing it at the Legion (next to Flatbread) for an old school premiere. Or we might try and show it outside.

That would be the ultimate in OLD SCHOOL Surf Moviedom.
Portions of the proceeds will go to the WOUNDED
WARRIORS PROJECT.

*Adding stills from Ed O'Connell from this past winter and dedicating this movie in his memory.

Now for Some Of My Weekly Global Observances

The two big stories this week is the 72 hour cease fire in Gaza that lasted all of one hour. I don't know about you, but I am not surprised by any of that. And the other big story is the deadly outbreak of the Ebola virus. Two Americans were infected with Ebola and are now back in the country.

Not sure how I feel about that. I mean a part of me thinks they should of stayed in Africa, while my more emotional side is to bring them back and try to save them. I hope they survive and I hope the virus stops with them.

Once again, let's all take a minute, and enjoy the weekly
humiliation of the mastermind terrorist who killed 3,000 innocent civilians on September 11th, 2001. Here we see our boy in a potential Ebola outbreak in Gitmo.

Gaze your eyes upon KSM as he is worked on by experts in white suits they check him for the deadly Ebola Virus (we should all be so lucky). Think of how much money we would save our country if this dickwad died from this horrible disease.
Khalid Sheik Mohammed (KSM), the mastermind behind 9-11
the captured Al Qeada ICON is getting his weekly slap in the
face. You're welcome KSM fans.

* Note to self: Must pick up a few boxes of Anti Virus itch meds at Home Depot this week.

(Above) Then there was this. A beach ball left to it's own devices. I watched a family hit the beach and throw all of their toys all over the place. The wind was gusting this morning out of the west. I saw this ball bounce by me and stop. I looked at the kids and parents who were throwing toys everywhere. The dad looked at the ball then went back to what he was doing. Which looked like he was in some weird zombie mode. The wind picked that ball up and moved it closer to the water. Nobody did a thing to stop it. Including me. Now some of you might ask. "Why did you not retrieve the beach ball Ralph and bring it back up the beach to the family?" Well it was low tide. I was working. And quite honestly, I felt like one of those National Geographic photographers who shoot a pride of lions attacking and killing a baby Wildebeast in Africa, and do nothing to save the young calf. I was documenting stupid humans on the beach. So I let nature take it's course. July 30, 2014. *WARNING The Beach ball does not make it.

North of America 1980 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

In the summer of 1980, three friends from New England went on a surf trip North of America. Myself, Larry Crateau, and Bruz Bowden. We had all been there many times before. In fact, our first surf trip there was in 1971...we had called this place the Last Frontier. And it was.

I shot this on my old GAF super 8mm movie camera. I did the editing in
Boston at a friend's apartment. There's a quick shot of me wearing my
original RAT Tee shirt. If you blink you may miss it.

It is a land of many perfect points, reefs, and beach breaks. We kept it a
secret for years... but like all surf destinations the word got out. It is not a
secret anymore.

These waves you are about to see, were surfed for the very first time. These are virgin rides. I am riding my old BLACK VINNY board, the same one my son Max rides today. Retro swallow fish tail. 6'2"

That board is 35 years old. I had it made in 1979.

The music is by my super talented nephew QWILL from one of his amazing CDs. The title of this CD is: "The Past Must Present." Ironic huh...?

Hope you like it...

Ralph

The clip above is a shorter version of the first JT clip. This YouTube is JT and myself in Tortola and JT in New Hampshire. There is some additional footage in the NG section that is not in the Vimeo clip.

The LATEST Release from SURF FREE OR DIE due in the Summer of 2014 is called THE COLD COAST. This trailer is a clip from the winter storms here in Northern New England. HERCULES, JANUS, NIKA, QUINTUS, PAX, REX, and all the rest.
The sea smoke and sunrise footage is worth the viewing alone. Not to mention the beautiful sunsets and the white snow covered seacoast.

The surfing in this particular clip is all local New Hampshire guys. Including: Jesse Gould, Weston Rogers, Johnny Meehan, Joel Feid, Ryan McGill, Lenny & Kai Nichols, Max Fatello, Johnny and Perry Reynolds, and Stevie O'hara.

The music in this clip is by my old friend Robin Trower .
