RIP John McCain. The SIX Day Swell. Body Surfing. Rainbows. Local Marine loses life in the Philippines. Wounded Warriors HIT THE BEACH this week! And more 45 Troubles.

Senator John McCain passed away on Saturday August 25th, 2018.
I personally worked on both of his presidential campaigns. When I stood out in the snow and cold holding his sign, I remember thinking to myself, any man who could endure 5 and 1/2 years in a North Vietnamese prison camp has my love and respect. And I can certainly stand out here in the cold for 12 hours holding his sign. He was, a TRUE AMERICAN HERO. He worked across the aisle and made no excuses about it. He was the REAL DEAL.

The photo above was taken by John Carden.

The video below was taken by me when he came to Joe's Meat Shoppe in North Hampton, NH. We were all there to support him. At one point he called out my name and shook my hand. It surprised me, and it ended up being one of the most memorable moments of my life. We have lost a GREAT AMERICAN TREASURE.

John McCain's visit to North Hampton, NH 2008 from
Memory Lane Movies on Vimeo.

This clip, will stay with me forever. Senator, it was an honor and a privilege to stand by your side. You would have made a GREAT President. And your most humble concession speech, after losing to Obama, is one for the ages.

The world is a lot less colorful, without your presence.

Thank you to all the Artists who submitted their amazing Surf Art to the Annual SURF ART BLOG. It warms my heart to see so many talented artists out there send their work in every year. You guys are the BEST! Keep doing what you do. It is greatly appreciated. And to those few, who purposely don't send in your art, for whatever reasons, the loss is on you. Not me. Not the Blog. This Blog reaches "Hundreds of Thousands of Readers" around the World. Last count according to Google Analytics, is 163 countries. Let that sink in.

Your work is being shown here for FREE around the world. F-R-E-E-!

Speaking of art. How about that amazing "Rainbow" we had on Wednesday
August 22nd, 2018. Whoa. Talk about breathtaking. Holy Mackerel Batman!
The sky was electric. The surf was so good earlier in the day, so to end it with that spectacular rainbow, was the frosting on the cake of one beautiful day here on the seacoast.

There must have been a thousand pics on social media of the rainbow and the clouds. My big regret is I didn't shoot video of it. I was shooting video all day, and put the video camera away when I came back down to see the QUIKSILVER movie at CINNAMON RAINBOWS. I did manage to take a few stills, and I got a few good ones. But had I had my 4K Sony? Ugh...

I mentioned that we had waves for six days right? Here's some of the "boys" checking the swell at the wall. Lots of action going down out there during this SIX DAY Swell. (Wasn't there a SIX DAY WAR somewhere?) Yes in June of 1967. Israel fought against the Arab nations in June of 1967. The war lasted "Six Days" with Israel being the victors (again). But this is not a history lesson, this is about six days of waves.

From Sunday to Friday. August 19th-August 24th, 2018. And, the water was so freaking warm. In the 70's my friends. Yes people were trunking it. Or wearing minimal rubber. This only happens a few times each summer. So when it does, and there's a swell? Well...all hell breaks loose. Like Kody Grondin pictured above. Or this woman (pictured below). Both surfers are wearing very little in terms of wetsuits.

The boys and the girls were out in numbers all week long. But one of the unique aspects of this particular swell was the reemergence of the "most
pure form of surfing" on the planet.

The art of body surfing. As shown here by Mikey Evans.

This was really a first for me. Honestly, I may have shot a few body surfers in my time on earth as a surf photographer, but I never actually concentrated on getting body boarder pics like I did with Mikey here.

Body surfing is about as close as you can get to being a seal or a dolphin.

Mikey was using fins. But some of them were not. And really, who among us have never body surfed before? I don't think I've ever gone into the ocean (sans surfboard) and not body surfed a few waves. It's a great feeling. I'll always enjoy body surfing.

This is NOT a good feeling. Dave Cropper and Phil Carey are into the latest surf craze "Foiling." Though it appears that CROP got foiled on his latest attempt at Foiling.

Be sure of yourselves when you go Foiling. That's a nasty cut across his stomach. But they seem to be OK with it. What the hell's wrong with surfers?
Surfers will always play outside of the proverbial "box". But then again, it's what makes surfing so appealing to the select few who do it.

And speaking of surfers...and their families. There's STILL a SURF FAMILY ROBINSON gathering. I ran this for 25 Years, and Now Duffy McCarthy is handling it all. This is his second year. Tell the kids to get ready. Summer is NOT Over until we have SURF FAMILY ROBINSON!

" Surfing and Surf Families Heals All Wounds."

This week's ED's Corner is of Kai Nichols who just turned 19 on the 24th. So what's that make him here? He's 11years old in this pic that Ed shot him on a rather good sized day. And it's in December. So clearly, it was cold out there. Kai is one of the BEST surfers to ever come out of New Hampshire.

Now for Some Local, National and International News
This is sad news. Local Marine Cpl. Jonathan Currier from Hampton, NH was lost at sea off the coast of The Philippines on August 9th. They declared him deceased on Friday August 17th after an extensive search in the waters around the area that his unit was located. Cpl. Currier was only 21 years old.

He was a helicopter crew chief on a CH 53 Super Sea Stallion
aboard the USS Essex (see below) . Our thoughts and prayers go out to Cpl. Currier's family and friends.

This hits close to me on a few levels. First, he is from Hampton. Second he's a Marine who was serving in the same area that I did some 50 years ago. In fact, I flew on those birds back in the day. And finally, I knew him.

He was in the local High School USMC ROTC program from 2012 to 2015. As Commander of the local Veterans post here in Hampton from 2001 to 2014 we used the USMC ROTC's color guard for every service we performed. Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, and our September 11th Observance. So I spoke with him and his fellow cadets at every single service. The fact that he made Cpl and was a Crew Chief on those choppers in such a short time speaks volumes as to what kind of a Marine he was. He was a motivated young Marine with the whole world at his feet. And he was just getting started, when his life was cut short.

He is qualified, and meets our criteria, to have his name engraved on the monument. The same monument, that he stood at attention to, for four years, listening to veterans like myself, speak of the heroes, who's names are all engraved on our Global War On Terrorism Monument. That's a bitter pill to swallow.

I can't tell you how many times I have said to young men like Cpl Currier as they left High school to enter the military "I don't want to see your name on this monument. I want you to come home to your family and friends." They would all nod their heads in agreement and smile, as they comforted me by saying they would all come back.

But I know about war and service to our country only too well. And I know about sacrifice. So I know, that sometimes even the best of the young warriors we send off into harms way, don't come back. We won't forget you and your sacrifice Cpl Currier, nor will we forget your family's sacrifice for as long as we shall live.

God speed Cpl Currier, and Semper Fi.

Now for someone who knows very little about service and sacrifice. This is the latest cover of TIME magazine.

It appears that 45 is in some DEEP DOO DOO.

Maybe Ole KSM was involved with this whole mess that 45 has found himself in. I wouldn't be surprised. After all, Ole Khaliddy is always seeking the public eye and the paparazzi. He loves getting his mug in the papers and on this Blog.

Started on July 26, 2010 ENDED July 26, 2011.
A Wave a day for 365 consecutive days.
Yesterday- The Young Kainalu "Kai" Nichols in 2005.
(Below) This photo of young Kainalu "Kai" Nichols was taken at the wall when he was just 6 years old. We were just talking about Kai last night. He used to be so loud, and just a little wild-man when he was a young grom. His transformation into this quiet and intelligent young man, who looks like he just stepped out of Vogue or GQ magazine is quite remarkable. It's true, the other day he came walking towards me at the Wall and I was thinking "Who is this male model carrying a surfboard?" It was Kai. And his surfing today? He's as good as anyone out in the water on any given day. Photo by Lenny Nichols

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Kai Nichols August 24th, 2018 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

What's there to describe? Today August 24th, 2018 is Kai's birthday. I made this little web edit for him. Just some footage I shot two days ago on August 22nd. The lad has come along way since he was in diapers at this same break. The music is by my old band from 1983. Love you Kainalu!

SURFING WITH SMILES August 9th, 2018 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

What's the old saying? "Third time's a charm!" After the first two SWS were canceled because of severe weather, we would not be denied a 3rd time. And as the skies stayed clear, and the water remained super warm, and there was an actual fun little swell for the kids. This event, is something beyond special. Because there was only one this summer, I made this video a little longer than I typically would for one of my web edits. But it goes by very quickly. It's really only 7 minutes long. I used two songs by the super talented Ty Tabor.

I know, that can be an eternity for some of you who can't break away from your phones or social media for more than 5 minutes. But trust me on this, I PROMISE that social media will still be there when you are done watching this for that long 7 minutes. And I also promise that you will still be able to check all of your text messages, Instagram posts, all of your tweets, and snap chats, will all be there when you get back. TRUST ME!

Big thanks to Surfing with Smiles (Lindsey) all the sponsors and volunteers. Cinnamon Rainbows and Dave Cropper much love and respect to you. Captain of Captains Kevin "Doc Grondin". Thank you Jude Logue for the generous donation. Thank you Sheila Nudd for the Snow Cones. Thanks to all the surfers and their parents. And honestly, a BIG HUG and thanks to all you volunteers. See you all Next Year! Peace and Love.

Chasing Down Hurricane Chris from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

On July 11th, 2018 a handful of NH surfers went chasing down the south swell generated by Hurricane Chris. We found what we went looking for. Though it took us longer than expected. We didn't arrive at our destination until 6:30PM. The boys got out of the water at 8:30PM. We went out to dinner and didn't get served until 10:00PM. We all arrived back home at 1:00AM. So was it worth it? Of course, it's surfing, you do what you have to do to get to the surf. And that's what we did. Surfers include: Kevin and Kody Grondin, Max Fatello, Ana Barend, and a handful of others.

Music is by the super talented Johnny A in his killer version of Play With Fire.
