Thank God there was no surf this week.
Because this is the ALL SURF ART BLOG.
No pics this week kids! Can you handle it?

These Surf Art Blogs are one of the yearly highlights for me. And the other surf artists. Like I wrote above, Thank God there was NO surf this week. I'd be in trouble. Not trouble trouble, but I'd be trying to fit it all in. The surf pics and the surf art. Instead, I have NOTHING BUT ART this week. There will be no pics in the galleries. It's all handmade surf art.

If you don't have any surf art hanging in your home and you're a surfer? Well that's just wrong. Every surf family should have some kind of surf art in their home. If you have surf pics hanging on your walls, you really need to get some original surf art. I'm not just saying this because I'm a surf artist, I'm saying it because it's the truth. To have an original piece of surf art is unique, because it's the only one of it's kind. You own it. You display it and people who visit your home will love it. Trust me on this one kids. I know what I'm talking about.

Unless you're one of my non surf readers. But even then, if you read this Blog you must have some kind of interest in surf. Or at the very least you find it beautiful to look at. And if that's the case, you would find surf art to be just as (if not more) beautiful to look at. So if you see anything you like in this week's Blog, contact the artists through me, and I'll connect you to them. I'd love nothing more than to help you all purchase a piece of original art to hang on your walls.

The painting at the top of the page is by Stan Chew. One of my all time favorite artists, guitarist, singer, songwriter, and he's a great human being too. This painting hangs in my library. It's hanging in the middle of my Vokey paintings.
And speaking of Vokey (Boardriderart) paintings, check this baby out.

That's a painting of Kevin "Doc" Grondin getting barreled in PR.
Hannah Vokey has a great style. Some of her paintings seem so real,
that people think they are photographs. That painting above could easily be mistaken for a photo. Hannah and her husband Sam are amazing artists.
Check out one of Sam's latest paintings. He calls it RISING SUN.
Sam is one of those artists who sets up his easel and paints the world in front of him. It's not uncommon to see him standing off of Rte 1A painting a seacoast surf scene. I've seen him out there in the blazing sun.

Sam and Hannah Vokey are two very talented artists. We're lucky to have them here in our surf community.

OK I saw this and had to post it. It's a painting by Jimbo Phillips who was commissioned by JEEP to do a series of surf art paintings. This one caught my eye because of the women surfing in it. As most of you know, I just finished my GRANITE GIRLS film and so it was only natural that I would like this.

And this painting kind of blew me away. It looked like a spot I know in southern Maine. It's a spot in Europe. The artist is Clark Takishima. Nice work Clark.

I know that a lot of you go into KB's Bagels on Kings Highway in Hampton.
I'm not sure how many of you are aware that I painted that mural. I think I did it in 1997 or 98. I can't remember. They have a frame around it now and you can't see my signature or the date. *Note the Rick Griffin tee shirt I'm wearing. He was my main influence when it comes to my own personal style of drawing and painting. Rick Griffin was the man. RIP Rick.

OK I did two paintings yesterday. August 18th, 2018. Yup two. This one is for a special someone in our lives. It's called WAITING FOR YOU. This surfer is dying to get away and find a wave like this. Hence the title. I had leftover paint so I put it to good use and painted one right after I did this one. And I spent all of 5 minutes painting it. You can see it down in the gallery section.

This image below was painted with a sock. That's right, a sock. Not sure where Phill Munson got that idea, but you know what? I like it. A freaking sock!

This magazine below was featured in the SURFERS JOURNAL last winter. Seeing the surf art on the cover and the funky paintings with Joey Ramone I know I'd be using it for this Blog. I love the crazy cartoon figures. Reminds me of both Griffin and ZAP comix.

Be sure and check out all the galleries this week to see the many different styles of surf artists. They are all worth the 10 minutes out of your life.

" Surfing and surf Art Heals All Wounds."

This week's ED's Corner is actually a painting of Ed by Hannah Vokey. If you click on the image you can see Ed better. He's standing there in his trademark stance that he was known for. That's Tony's old VW Bus that caught fire a few years back.

Now for Some Local, National and International News
OK you knew I wasn't going to pass on some surf art of 45. It was easy to find. Thank you Google. This is a classic image. Here we see 45 tweeting his fool head off to stop that massive wave from unloading on him. It was all to no avail. The wave ate him up.

That's one small tweet for 45, and one large wave for the rest of us. Hold your breath 45 and hold onto that hair piece.

I am not surprised that KSM wanted a piece of this Surf art Blog. After all he is an artist. You remember years past when he would featured in the Surf Art Blog doing some finger painting and what nots. This year he did a caricature of himself riding a wave. It appears that he drew himself as some kind of Big Foot.

Must be hard sitting in GITMO day after day. But those are the consequences of your actions Khaliddy. You're just gonna have to deal with it. And with 45 at the helm you ain't going anywhere for the foreseeable future. So draw your caricatures of you surfing in a Sasquatch costume. You look great. Seriously. Good job.

KSM Photoshop of the Week
And so my friends,
please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed).

A Wave a day for 365 consecutive days.
Yesterday- The Lonely Left 1978
(Below) This painting was a wedding gift to old friends of mine. I loved them both very much. But then one day they told me they were getting a divorce. I was heartbroken for them. I said that I wanted the painting back. I wasn't going to choose which one of them would or should keep the painting. I renamed it The Lonely Left." It hangs in my home office today, and it will stay with me until "Death do we part." Painting by RALPH

From JOHNNY A
A quick Tribute to Aretha Franklin I did recorded live to Spire 2track written by: Goffin/King

SURFING WITH SMILES August 9th, 2018 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

What's the old saying? "Third time's a charm!" After the first two SWS were canceled because of severe weather, we would not be denied a 3rd time. And as the skies stayed clear, and the water remained super warm, and there was an actual fun little swell for the kids. This event, is something beyond special. Because there was only one this summer, I made this video a little longer than I typically would for one of my web edits. But it goes by very quickly. It's really only 7 minutes long. I used two songs by the super talented Ty Tabor.

I know, that can be an eternity for some of you who can't break away from your phones or social media for more than 5 minutes. But trust me on this, I PROMISE that social media will still be there when you are done watching this for that long 7 minutes. And I also promise that you will still be able to check all of your text messages, Instagram posts, all of your tweets, and snap chats, will all be there when you get back. TRUST ME!

Big thanks to Surfing with Smiles (Lindsey) all the sponsors and volunteers. Cinnamon Rainbows and Dave Cropper much love and respect to you. Captain of Captains Kevin "Doc Grondin". Thank you Jude Logue for the generous donation. Thank you Sheila Nudd for the Snow Cones. Thanks to all the surfers and their parents. And honestly, a BIG HUG and thanks to all you volunteers. See you all Next Year! Peace and Love.

Chasing Down Hurricane Chris from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

On July 11th, 2018 a handful of NH surfers went chasing down the south swell generated by Hurricane Chris. We found what we went looking for. Though it took us longer than expected. We didn't arrive at our destination until 6:30PM. The boys got out of the water at 8:30PM. We went out to dinner and didn't get served until 10:00PM. We all arrived back home at 1:00AM. So was it worth it? Of course, it's surfing, you do what you have to do to get to the surf. And that's what we did. Surfers include: Kevin and Kody Grondin, Max Fatello, Ana Barend, and a handful of others.

Music is by the super talented Johnny A in his killer version of Play With Fire.
