10th, 2008 Funny how that feeling never changes. Generation after generation. When Summer starts to wind down, the leaves on certain trees change colors, and the the thought of leaving the beach, it's almost too much to handle. Heading back to school seemed like the end of the world to us. That feeling came rushing back to me. I've
often said, that the older you get, the faster time seems to accelerate.
Except in this case. When we were young, and the distant bells of School
started ringing in our collective thoughts, well, the hands of time went
whipping by. Before you knew it, we were buying new school clothes and
getting ready for the confines of school. It sucked. It always seemed harder on us surfers. Or rather, those of us who hung around the beach. The beach in the summer was the only place to be. I say that wistfully my friends, mostly because, I have spent very little time at the beach this summer. Due in part to my constant project schedule and quite frankly, the lack of good beach days. I mean has it rained where you live this summer? Every day it seems. It's like Monsoon season. The rainy weather and because our kids have all grown up and honestly? ( Hanging on the beach, with Mom and Dad is not exactly hip anymore.) We have found fewer days on the beach this year, than past summers. Now don't get me wrong, if there was surf... we'd be hanging for sure. But since BERTHA, it's been slim pickings. I suppose I could be long boarding or Supbing with the boys, but I need to work. And I need a little more than knee high to get me motivated. But having said that, I have to tell you all, I miss it. I miss those days, hanging on the beach, with all the Surf Families. Just hanging, sitting in the sun, getting tanned and doing nothing. Basically just being a beach bum. A surf hobo. A local. I know it's only been a few weeks, but I miss the beach. I miss it. I miss the feeling that only the sun, surf and sand can provide. It's why we all live here. Or live close enough to drive here. It's why our friends from way up north, drive hours to get here. We all love the beach in the summer. Hearing Noelle complain about missing the beach, caused me to rethink my own relationship with that stretch of sand, surf, and cement. I miss the sights and sounds of summer. My friends and their young families. I know there are those, who hang on the beach, regardless of their work status, or where their kids are at. They hang on the beach every summer, because that's what we do. We're surfers who live in New England. And dammit people, we only get a few dam months out of the year where we can actually pretend the water is warm and we can wear our summer surf wear. And do nothing except hang on the beach. But yet, here I sit. Looking out my window at my tropical trees blowing in the breeze. (I put all my tropical plants outside every summer.) The sun is shining, and who knows, there might be a little bump to ride on my Long board. Maybe I'll head down right now. My wife Cory is there...maybe I'll surprise everyone with my ridiculous half tanned body. I'll throw the LB on the roof, and grab a light wetsuit and a towel, duct tape my bad ear, and head down the street. Wait...what's
that? Another line of thunderstorms are moving through? There's no surf.
The sun is gone...And Max has my vehicle! Doh!
But I will say this. Homer's going to the beach this week. Rain or shine. Surf or no surf. As long as Bart lets me use my own dam vehicle. |
I guess I rubbed some of you the wrong way last week with my Manny comments. Look, I'll leave you with this last word and leave it at that. It's the RED SOX not the MANNY SOX. It's about the team. It's a freaking team. You play on a team. You get paid huge amounts of money to play on a team. In other words, there are other players. Shut up and play. Speaking of teams. I was surprised to see Brett Farve leave Green Bay and head to the dark side. Not that I care about that NFL team of ours anymore (I'm still not over that last game). But I must admit, it has thrown a slight wrinkle in the AFC East makeup. And did I also hear that Chad Pennington is going to Miami? Good
thing I don't care anymore, otherwise I might have something to say about
all of this....OK OK I care! But I'll take that last game to the grave
with me as the Biggest Letdown in New England Sports History! OK how many of you caught the John Edwards scandal over the weekend? Look, what people do in their own private lives, is their own business. But when you run for President of the United States of America, well, it becomes all of our business. What a lying scumbag sleazebag! Oh I'm sorry, did I offend some of you Edwards supporters? I'm sorry. The hell I am! Why? First of all, I hate the dude's hair. Are you kidding me? When
he and John Kerry were running for office, there was just too much
hair for my liking. Those two together, with their perfect haircuts, made
me ill. It was like "Vote For Us America. We Have Perfect Hair!"
Maybe
those of you, who still drive around with your KERRY EDWARDS bumper
stickers, as some sort of badge of redemption, will now take them down.
Unless of course, you support this sleazebucket bonehead. Remember
my friends...Surfing heals all wounds.... |
